I know there's a gear acquisition thread, but this one is just for the cool stuff you got for Christmas or bought with your Christmas money ;D
Mine is this Memphis I got for $60 off eBay this morning. An obvious 80s relic w/the single humbucker and hockey stick headstock. Plus, it was $60!
The sticker is a Flotsam/Voivod sticker.
Last night was New Amp Sim Day ("NASD") to myself! Now I have a rig that sounds just like Meshuggah and Periphery!!! Videos are in this thread, I will post clips around Christmas. I could not resist any longer. Happy day for me :) :beerchug:
I have been listening to Meshuggah's new album on Spotify alot, which sounds killer, just like last nights jamming with my new Christmas Death Metal present :headbang:
here are clips of what I bought:
rock on! pretty stoked on this purchase! I already had ezmix2 so this pack was $50 for me.

also, I got the S2.2 Koloss drums for $15. its only one EQ setup, but its a great one!

I got a Z Vex Sonar pedal. Pretty fun so far.
I mentioned this before but i got one of these.
I got one of those PickPunches. I don't like how the picks feel from old credit/gift cards (too slippery), so I ordered some "tortex" type stuff from their website for pretty cheap.

Man, I gotta get one of those!
Use old lp's. there grippy.

Shit, I want one.
with my new Christmas Present in my post above,
I just recorded a new song with ezmix, EMG81/85s and S2.0. it is pretty machine like and brutal, so I am calling it machine: http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=12074284 (http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=12074284)
br00tz!!! Basically I took the class titled Meshuggah 101 and bought aformentioned shizzle and did a quick mix and song
Rock on :)
That pick punch is pretty bitchin'. I need one.

Slightly over the top one knob fuzz with some high octave mixed in. From a small Vancouver company called Union.

seriously, that is a TOTAL FAIL. WHY?
have you ever played a credit card pick? that plastic is not made for that., it turns to white dust everywhere and the pick is gone in 10 minutes, all under your guitar strings and on the pups. you would be better off stamping metal picks from green bean cans.
Received a $80 gift card to Guitar Center. Which I promptly used on my layaway. Only $123 away from a "new" head and cab. I posted pics of the head and cab in the new gear section.
Only gear i got is one of these:

Nice. I don't really even like tremolo and I want one of those.
One of these days I'd like to find a slide that actually fits my finger and sounds good. I don't think I have particularly corpulent tendrils but the only ones I ever seem to find that fit (which is rare) are poorly made glass slides that just sound dead. Part of the problem is that I like putting slides on my ring finger and from years of basketball the knuckles are a bit battered. I'd be fine if I could just deal with playing with a pinky slide but I just don't have the control with it.
I also got a Vic Firth pepper mill

The Pick Punch is not a TOTAL FAIL. It works great if you use the right material.
(Unless you were just pretending to be a melodramatic 15 year old girl.)
what i was wondering about the pick punch is:
1. dont picks have rounded or beveled edges? and wouldnt a pick without rounded edges kind of scrape against the strings?
2. other than credit cards laying around...which apparently are not suitable,....what material is handy to use? defeats the purpose if you have to order special material, might as well order 100 picks.
Its really #1 that bothers me tho. that and that I use the more severly shaped teardrop picks like these:

this is probably the first year since I was 12 that I havent gotten something musical for christamas. either I have everything I need or my interest is waning...or both
momma threw down a 125 dollar repair on my lab series L-5. best solid state amp of all time. cheers to momma.
I got a Boss DB-90. My timing is gonna get rock solid.
I also got an Akai LPD8. I'm using it as a pedalboard for virtual amps.

These guys make gorgeous custom slides, sized to whatever you need: http://www.diamondbottlenecks.com/DB08/index.asp
Had I been buying my own, that's probably the route I would've gone. But I put "blue glass slide" on the wishlist and got the Dunlop as a gift. No complaints.

Late 70's Matsumoku Vantage double P bass. Gonna be my backup.
Dude, that is beautiful. I'm still bigtime in love with my Matsumoko V (Aria Pro II).
Thanks man. Really nice instrument. My guitar player has a late 70's Vantage semi hollow. After playing that, I had my eyes on the lookout for them. You have a V? sounds cool. Post a pic?
I stripped the double P down and buffed out the finish, really brought out the beauty. Also, having the pickups rewound for some more beef. Here she sits today:

Here's the Aria (paid $350 for her):

I've since replaced the microphonic bridge pickup with a newer Dimarzio SD since that's what's in the neck, but my next move is to get a pair of PAF style p/us in there, instead. No $$ for that right now, though.

Chovie, go take a look through the company's website. That should answer most of your questions. There are several models of the puncher, so you can make the shapes you're used to. They also sell different kinds of plastic material, so you don't have to use credit cards, or whatever.

Man, a pack of Dunlop Jazz IIIs lasts me a year. The Dunlop fat purple stubbies last close to a year EACH. I guess I'm not the target market for the Pick Punch peeps, tho.
I lose picks. Oddly, I dont lose my knife, or the lone 9mm round I keep in my pocket...

I was gonna ask the same. I'm prolly getting a Washburn tonight.

Me? It's that one with less inlay on the fretboard.
Yeah, I've been coveting a parlor git for awhile now. The Washburns look nice, made in the US, too.
Let us know how she plays/sounds!
I've had my finger on the trigger for a month now, and keep talking myself out of it. But fuck it, it's Xmas and I deserve it. Ill let ya know how it plays when I get it.
Alright, trigger pulled. I've been going back and forth between a dobro and this parlor. The made in US is what sold me on this one, and it just looks old as fuck. I hope it's quality. Ill let ya know when I get it.

dude, yes it is. I bought 2 packs of purple tortex picks maybe 2 years ago. I have yet to open the second pack.
so my investment in QUALITY MFRD AND READY-2-GO picks is about $8 per maybe 3-4 yrs.
so now you have to invest in special material which has markup and then actually go through the labor of punching them out and SANDING? or otherwise finishing them. the million dollar machine that makes millions of identical picks really does better
Jake, when you have failed, you need to fess up to a really bad idea. A pick punch is really a stupid acquisition for the average joe. ergo total fail and HIGHLY recommended to pass unless you are making cute artsy stuff.
i already blabbed about my headphones and Tascam 24 track i got myself.
still eyeing this $200 fender acoustic. it plays nice for a $200 cutaway acoustic. i need a 'round the fire beater.

I'm glad that you're able to keep picks around for as long as you do. But since you and I happen to be different people, your circumstances don't necessarily apply to me, now do they?
I got it as a Christmas gift. That's why it's in this thread. It was a $0.00 investment. Was my "failure" in unwrapping and "acquiring" this gift, exactly? The two sheets of .80mm Acetal Delrin (same as Dunlop Tortex) were a $3.25/sheet investment. They will make about 140 picks total.
As far as sanding goes, I invested about 18 seconds rubbing the edges of each pick I made today with one of these.
I just don't see the reason for such uproar. I never said "
everyone needs to buy these RIGHT NOW!!!" did I? I said I got it for Xmas, credit card picks suck, and I bought tortex. You need to save the internet outrage for something way more deserving. Sheesh.

Maybe it is a novelty item, but that alone makes it NOT a fail. It's a great way to try a variety of materials as picks. You just might discover a material you like better than tortex.
I got one of those for Christmas as well. I made some cool looking credit card picks, but I assumed they would not be good for playing guitar. After reading this thread, I realize all I need to do is sand it down. I did use one to play my bass and I had no problems with it. I think I will order their Acetal Deirin or something else. I don't have the time or patience to do some of the things they have on the website, but someday I will.
Just as a note, the Acetal Derlin sheets are smoother than the (coated?) Dunlop stuff, therefore less grippy. I haven't yet done it, but I'm thinking another 18 seconds of scuffing up the faces of them will add enough "tooth" to them.
That thing sucks ! I bought picks already made !! :P
Yeah, but you can make them out of exotic materials - like homeless people's long yellow toenails or Ewok foreskin.

not the same I know but I've always wanted a tenor guitar. A friend had one and every time I was over there i played the shit out of his.
oooops. I missed a very key thing at the start: gift
maybe i'll learn to read some time.
I apologize. I got rolling thinking you were suggesting this as an actual alternative, and for sure not with credit cards.
For something to horse around with, it is cool.
but i do stand by the list of justifying why not to do this as a main pick source is huge.
just the wasted time even.

Sorry... this question got lost in the pick punch noise. ::)
Larrivee Rosewood Special. I think the model number is P-03 but am unsure as I bought it on Guitar Center's used site. Spruce top, rosewood sides, ebony board. I absolutely love this thing and it gets the majority of my attention.

bass sic, only complaint I've heard about that beaut of a washburn is the period authentic v shaped neck profile. Some dig it, some don't. Great quality and solid woods, though. Hope ya like it. :)
my wife scored us an early-80's organ, with the bass pedals, basic drum beats, the whole 9. now i can't stop kicking out the slow jams.
'this one's for the ladies...'
I sand all my pics down anyway. Started doing that after I found Dunlop Sharp's.

Just how I like 'em. :) "Zebra is fine creature to admire, but you do not have to
ride it." - old Russian proverb I just made up.
I've actually been considering replacing the bridge pins since the stock ones have a little abalone on 'em.
Also, if anyone else happens to be in the market for a parlor, I highly recommend contacting Steve @ http://www.vintageparlorguitars.com/. Always has a nice stable at reasonable prices, will set them up to your liking, and is generally great to do business with. I would've had one of his if the last tropical depression to hit the eastern seaboard hadn't swallowed up Vermont at the same time I found my Larry via GC.

It arrived Friday night and I've messed around a little with it. Sad to say its going back. No frett buzz and very low action, plays and sounds great. The issues I have are sharp frett ends, which I would fix myself if I was keeping it. Also the finish is crap, I know it was built to look vintage, but it seems like scrap wood was used and the tops finish is dull and dirty looking. Very light guitar too, feels like a toy. I paid 4 for it which I think is twice what it's worth. Just my opinion.
That sucks dude. But if also confirms my mantra of never buying a guitar without playing it first unless it's just that good of a deal.
So with all this talk of parlor guitars, I dug oot a guitar i forgot I had. it's a 60's Silvertone classical style. it only has 12 frets up to the body like a parlor and 18 total. Is it considered a parlor? Shit I should know this stuff for all the years I've played...derp
Edit-my fret count was a derp
I looked for one of these local so I could check it out before buying. It looks really good in pictures.
Sorry to hear it bass sic. Check out http://www.vintageparlorguitars.com/current.html if you've still got the lil' fiddle GAS. Reasonable prices and some sweet guits to be had.
"Parlor" classification is all aboot the bout size, not number of frets, RAGER. My Larry's 9 1/2" on top, 13" on bottom but there can be some variance there too. It's basically the girth, not the length. ;)
Yea I saw that link you posted about an hour after I ordered the Washburn. Good stuff there, thanks.
Bummer, but better to send it back than be stuck with a lemon. That site with the used parlors will come in handy when I'm ready.
i picked up a $50 nylon stringed pawn shop guitar thinking it would be good for summer on then deck...and it was okay for that purpose I guess.
Id like a better beater tho...
There are often a lot of old Harmony (or Stella by Harmony) parlor guitars to be found on cl & garage sales/pawn shops. If you find a good specimen, grab it.
