I've been playing guitar since 1993,haters.
You?
2006.
well good. get in on the project. i told you i would host reaper and wavosaur so you can download them if u wanted them.
ive had my cortez LP copy since 1978, but really only dicked around with it. i got serious about 2 years before i joined sr.com so im thinking 2002 ish. so lets say 9yrs, give or take, of serious playing and trying to learn the shit.
im a slow learner..heh BUT i have so much fun....who cares. although i can play chords pretty sick now. i would say that is my strongest skill, rapid chord changes.
since 1997. when i was 11.
i've neglected my guitars for the last 3 years or so because grad school's a 60-70/hr a week job and i feel guilty if i do anything other than work or sleep. but fuck that shit, i miss it.
got my strat copy that i still have in 1994. got serious about playing in 1997. so . . . 14 years? man, i should be a lot better than i am . . .
since late '97ish. They offered guitar classes at my high school. They wanted to teach you how to read music and shit, but fuck that. I jammed to Zeppelin songs with my friends everyday for 3 hours and failed the shit out of that class.
I got my first acoustic guitar in 1976. I dint really learn to actually play anything till I'd got an electric in 1984.
Got my first guitar in 1984. You'd think I'd be able to play circles around Ynwie by now but I can't. I can just play circles around some of my friends.
Now I am depress. Thanx :'(
"Got my first real six string...oh at the Five an' Dime..played it 'til my fingers bled...was the summer of '69"
Actually it was '79, a three pickup blue Teisco Del Rey. I got my first "good" guitar in '82, a Gibson SG, one of the ones with the half-pickguard and harmonica bridge
I'm not even the oldest cat here, that's kinda nice.. haha
Oh I'd say about 20, now coming up quick on 21 days.
Started playing bass in early 2002. Guitar "seriously" in I'd say late 2009. I didn't really take music seriously until 2007. I was really sick in 2006 and couldn't play and found I missed playing a lot and threw myself into it when I got healthy.
Nowadays I work so much I don't play that much anymore :( Its funny too because now I am actually pretty good on bass.
22 years.
i started playing bass in december 1987 when i was 19..bought my first bass which was a black peavey T-40. the thing was awesome..the neck got a crack and i sold it to a friend..the crack was disclosed prior to the sale..btw.

since the summer of 87. I was 16. Sold my little street bike and bought a squire strat with a peavey rage and a cheapo flanger pedal.
I got my first bass for Xmas 78, but never made a real attempt to play till 1980. Since then I've been awesome. Probably the best ever. I'm huge in japan.
224 Dog Years
Just shy of 30 years unless you count a couple start and stops before then. Or the 5 years I took off from music. No guitar, no CDs, no radio. Well, talk radio.
'92
I was playing cello in 1969 when I discovered rock 'n' roll (Zeppelin, Steppenwolf and Sabbath) Took me two years to afford my own drumkit, so...40 years?
wait...cello..the holy grail of doom instruments.
a)do you still have one?
b) if so, do you still mess with it.
c) if so..u gotta make me tracks.
Nahh... I continued to play anthrough High School, but when college came around I sold it (for a pretty good price!) to get my (the?)first electronic drumkit, the simmons SD series of the early '80's.
I don't have that anymore, either.
drums 95 > bass 97 > guitar 99 to present.
First riff I learned on guitar was some Shonen Knife song. First song I learned in it's entirety was Smells Like Teen Spirit.
Wow you people that have been playing since the 70's/early 80's must be really good.
Since 92
Cello for about 25 years, bass for about 20 years, bassoon for about 19 years, guitar for about 15 years.
wait...bassoon..the holy grail of doom instruments!
About 12 years, I think. Only been playing in bands for the past 8.
doomhawk ----> triple threat
wait cello AND bassoon " holy ???..holy grail batman!" i have to sit down. imma kidnap this guy and keep him in my basement strapped to a recording setup.
if he played cathedral organ too, ill start a new religion to worship him.
Since we're including other instruments I'll have to add Piano and Violin since 1983.
First time I tried playing a guitar was back in '85.
Started guitar in the early 80s, got in first band by '85. Can't say there's been a ton of improvement in my playing over the years, but i do seem to be getting progressively louder.
17 years on guitar. I've played drums maybe two years and am still awful at it.
Started teaching myself how to play in 1998 at age 31. Still got a long ways to go.
Started on guitar at age 14 in 1989. First sat behind a drumkit in 2003. Picked up the bass in late 2004. Now bass is my main instrument.
Piano since 1990.
Classical Guit since 1996.
'Lectric since 1999.
I should be lots better at all of 'em. :(
Oh other instruments than the main one?
Blues harp since about 7 or 8. Given and taught by my sisters boyfriend around '76
Got my first drumset in '96.
Been dabbling in keys since highschool
Oh yeah and I got my first bass in about '94. only been the bass player in 1 band though
Guitar at least 20 years...and no album yet, wow that's some pathetic shit right there isn't it? Messing on drums and bass here and there for years, but only recently acquired a decent set and still missing pieces. Never owned a bass...yet.
Guitar - since 1993 aged 9.
Started out on trumpet in the 60s, switched to sax when I got braces in the '70s. I don't play either of those anymore.
First picked up the guitar in '72, started taking lessons in '74 and played for 15 years before giving it up for 11 years to race mountain bikes.
Started playing again in '01, so that's about 26 years total, I think.
Owned my electric since October 11th, 2005. Started playing it since February 21st, 2008.
4th grade 1976, Puff the Magic Dragon and shit like that in music class at public school...(thats right, remember... before reagan they had music in public schools, including liberal hippie music teachers with guitars..then the gipper and michael j fox came along and conviced america we didnt really wanna pay for art or music for our kids, better to buy another dozen nuclear war heads that we are currently paying to dismantle).
first guitar was a rented acoustic, first electric Hondo 2 les paul copy.
1979 bought a brand new fender stratocaster, with birthday and xmas money saved for the 3 years in between, which I still have.
so i dont know thats what 35 years? a little less?
pedal steel for 5 now, still suck asss
Quotepedal steel for 5 now, still suck asss
That reminds me: I've been sucking at lap steel for over a year now.
My first attempt was in 1977, I took about 4 or 5 lessons at the local store. Dropped that shit when dude said he'd NEVER teach me a Kiss song after I bought the Alive II sheet music book.
Then I bought an Electric and an MXR distortion pedal in 1982. Plugged that shit into the tape deck of my parents stereo and taught my self some Sabbath, Priest, Kiss and some traces of Maiden. Been an on and off love affair since.
Oh yea I also first started playing bass in '96,after someone in my family got a '79 Fender Jazz bass (wish I still had that).
25 years.
In the misty past I learned piano but that didn't stick. Got me an electric in '85 I wanna say. Got my SG in '86. First band in '88. I still need more practice..
Got my first guitar around '96 and a bass not too long after that but just goofed around trying to play death doom and black metal type stuff for awhile, I really had no idea what I was doing until I started trying to learn Cream and Blue Cheer songs around '00. I still suck balls but I started getting a lot more serious about a year and a half ago when I started jamming with a drummer and we decided to do a 2 piece metal band. We have 5 originals and have learned 2 covers. So I'm 33 and I've only written 5 full songs on guitar, well 6 if you count the heavy psych song I did a couple years back. Phase 3 will be playing out and recording a demo.
I've been drumming for two - almost going on three years and perhaps i might try guitar and bass after a while.

Puff the Magic Dragon is a hella trippy song, right on.
My first electric guitar was a toy guitar from Toys 'R' Us that had a built-in amplifier. I even posted a pic of it in that Fugly Gear thread. First guitar I ever owned was an acoustic.
21 years off and on. Probably about 15 years "on".
Piano for 30 years off and on, guitar for 23 years. I tried drums when I was a kid, but I wasn't very good. I sound like a guitar player playing drums.
I started on bass back in early '01, and switched to playing electric guitar in 2003. It made more sense at the time as I was really into the chugging metal stuff. That summer, after graduating HS, I got more into it. Never went anywhere, but was my everyday hobby until about mid '09. At that point, my lack of skill compared to effort was leaving me disheartened and burnt out. I noodle all the time and now am getting back into it more seriously.
guitar 17 years, vocals 4 years. started on piano 24 years ago

The first song my guitar teacher taught me was Octopus's Garden. My guitar teacher was cool tho and he was an Eagles and country fan.
25 years on guitar. Very lazy and don't display 25 years of techinal virtuosity or anything. Been beating on other peoples drums for years and desiring my own drum kit is a daily obsession. one day maybe.....

I had that desire too for many years, but since they make a lot of noise i decided to buy an electronic drumkit. It is kinda like i am using acid while i really want mushrooms, but atleast i can bang them shits at midnight way too loud without any of my neighbours offering me a ham sandwich!
Been playing bass for 4 years. Maybe 5. Got my bass and amp from my brother in law who had in his apartment just collecting dust. I didn't really play the first year but I got into it eventually. I still suck humongous. But at least now I can play some stuff.
Well if you're gonna keep me strapped there, get the organ get some cheeseburgers and tell my wife that I moved to Abu Dhabi. I'm sure I can learn it. I dabble in piano but not to the extent I'd say I play it.
