Playing bass for a little while will probably make you a better guitar player and songwriter in the end! You can learn the Geezer bass parts pretty easy, it's all pentatonic scale. A lot of bass playing is just mechanical (getting your fingers to execute what you want them to do, and stay in time/groove) which is just a matter of time and practice. You can totally do it.

I see it this way too.    

fortunately I am more of a piano player than guitar player. so I see the bass adding it's own part to the sum total of the song.

to me, the best basslines are the ones that add more lock to the groove in the overall song's sound or actually drive the song.
these are not necessarily technical or crazy. guys like flea are basically "drum fillers" and that fancy crap is unnecessary to serve the song.

listen to "mambo number5" bassline  for a part of the song the bass is just 2 notes 2 counts, but it holds the song perfectly while the more lively mambo horns and stuff is happening. anything else would be a distraction. and that solid bom-boom  bom-boom is exactly what is needed

doubling the guitar is an effect that can be used occasionally I suppose.

I still say, study McCartney.  When I learned that song to make the sasquatch made the play, I got to see under the hood of the arrangement of that song. the beatles were old school arrangers like right out of the music academy. they composed basslines and rhythm guitar lines like you would compose classical music.
for those of you who took music theory somewhere you would know point-counterpoint and inter-arranging for several instruments so they combine their different parts into a greater whole without undue duplication.  

I also took apart a bunch of w/e gospel sings out of a hymn book that was laying around.
check out the 4 part arrangement of a song called
"there is a quiet place" I think..was old hoagy song or some composer like him.   the 4 parts are written so amazingly.  but all the songs are like that.
IMO the bassline defines the song, and this is why it makes a person a better guitar player when you realize the guitar is merely pretty wrapping paper.

I say learn "Swing on This" and "They call me the breeze" haha to see why bass is SO fun.

btw, I learn the basslines on the guitar first, but I love finger picking so I play the guitar like a bass while I learn the part. THEN I move it over to that oversized slab and speed it up and smooth it out.

and the proof to what I said is this:  if you start playing those basslines all by themselves you will get people to boogie. there's the proof that that IS the spine of the song haha

regarding monobrow:   I first heard their amazing music and skills w/e going on 10 years ago??? when I made that giant thread in the sr com jamroom of bands to link your music.

I even commented on the technical mastery they all had and the good catchy tunes. and to this very day after listening to their offerings over time, I still do not understand why these guys are not all over the radio. I personally think monobrow is possibly the best band to ever grace either of these boards.

btw, I don't think I am ever allowed into Canada again, so no more montreal for me. I love that place. Europe is only a 2 hr flight from ohio when montreal is involved.

If you have any doubts about Kings X see them live. That should change your mind.

Then do yourself the additional favor of seeing them every night for a month, for the added experience of seeing how consistent they are night to night.

Jerry Gaskill is a beast on drums too.

Took Marshall in yesterday.

Guy turned it on n fired right up.

He (front desk, not the tech) was saying I should go through my signal chain/pedals.

I tried to say that would a pedal issue cause the amp to cut out completely? I plugged straight in and amp was still dead.

I left it there to see if the problem would re-present itself.

See what they say...

Ok. Looks like ohms switch is getting fucky.

Shop said amp ran great all day. Until they switched ohms to try another cab.

Makes sense, a moving part on a 34 year old amp that's only been used regularly (back and forth from guitar to bass, 16 to 4 ohms) in past few years.

I never thought I'd feel a huge sense of relief to find out something is wrong with my amp.

Picked it up today, no charge. I love Austin Vintage Guitars and their techs. Good people.

Trying it out tomorrow in a rehearsal as a bass amp. Make sure it works before a guitar gig on Saturday.

Note to self: pack guitar pedalboard in van.

I used my bass pedalboard last week. The Fulltone bass drive makes an interesting guitar pedal. Was not able to dial in the Snarling Dogs wah tho. Weird.

Weird but true.  Ive noticed that depending on over all sound of the band im playing with some wahs sound good and some dont.  Ive found that in bands without a bass player or with one that is not just playing a ton of notes i can use a really deep funky wah... but if tbere is a really dominate sounding bass then i need my trebly ice picky wah..... kind of like how big muffs are good in some settings but not others....thats why ive started collecting wahs.

Kids, work late, work early, never check listings, snow, 'it's too cold', 'that person might be there', 'I hate crowds', 'I hate people', 'I hate everything', stopped paying attention to new bands in '99, Netflix.

Did I miss anything?

I try not to care about turnout(and this isn't about my bands, I'm happy if 10 people show up) but sometimes I'm amazed at the lack of fucks given when a great band comes through. But OF COURSE you want people to show up when your band plays. Or maybe not.

Dude when blackfinger played at the pub in Pittsburgh me, slee, And jommy were 3 of 15 in crowd when they played. Was awesome but pathetic. Dont know how to feel when that shit happens.

this is me. i live outside of town and work tend to work early. i also work an extra 10-20 hours a week easy, if not more, on non-'work' work. i will usually muster if a touring band i like is playing locally (up to about an hour drive each way if necessary), but not always. my band also hardly plays out. we don't really expect people to come out for us but sometimes they do...whether it's just the novelty that we're actually playing or what, i dunno. i think we have a bit of a following, but they don't seem to come out much, either...hermit metal!

i have a number of times driven the hour drive to johnson city, tn to catch a band that didn't play my town, and gone to many many more local shows, too, so maybe it's not me as much...the three who rode in my car were the only not-one-of-the-other-bands people in attendance when indian played here 5 or 6 years ago, so i get the wonderment when cool shit is underattended, too.
