So I just picked up this 80's Traynor 4x12.  $160 CAN. He listed it for $100 but I emailed him and he said some guy was picking it up the next day.  I told him $150 and I didn't have time to break a $20, hence $160.  Does anyone know much about the speakers inside? Here are the numbers on the inside.  I plugged it into my 10 Watt head at a low volume and they sounded pretty good.

Traynor cabs from the late 60's/early 70's had rebadged Jensen's. But these definitely are not vintage Jensen's.  I've also heard that after the Jensen's they used Marsland's.

Google 'dating guitar speakers' or similar phrases. There are some pretty good resources online. The serial number should reveal the manufacturer, year of manufacture, and specs. Hopefully.

Same magnet style as the speakers in my Traynor 412.  Is it one of the ones with the black tolex and the silver piping, with silver grips built into the side?

Pissy

Looks like I missed my page.  Any of the Traynors I came across had Marslands.  Not great speakers and I believe most Canadians agree.  They look different than those though.  Cool that you figured out what they were.
Vinyls.   deal.

Yeah exactly chille, what's your opinion of them? I only have my 10 Watt Champ clone to test it until tomorrow. And I can't rip it in my new apt. Had to have an 8ohm added to my Bogen to use it.  I'm testing it through that and my buddy's '69 Traynor YVM tomorrow night.

I hope it turns out a winner.  I can always drop new ones in if they suck.  I was confused at first with the code and which # was the right one. The dash in the number threw me off, but the "67" is a dead give-away for Emi's.

I'll log on Saturday and give a full report and take video of it.

Like an idiot, I left my camera on this side of the border this weekend.  Plus I got busy setting up my buddy's studio with him.  I did manage to test it, with and without the stupid insulation inside.  I put on my winter gloves and yanked all that 1981 crap out and shoved it in a trash bag.  Why the fuck would anyone want that inside their cab?  The cab cuts very nicely now and especially with a Tele or whatever.  I think eventually I wanna drop some Emi Screaming Eagles in though.

Because they don't like peaks and notches in the mids and boom in the midbass.

Jake

I was gonna say because they liked it flat and lifeless. At least for guitar applications.
poop.

I'm with Jake, it made the cab sound muddy. As in, Casey-at-the-bat muddy. I wanna cut through since I'm more of a Rock and Roll guy.

I can't say that you've got the same speakers as mine does.  They are square magnets, but I never bothered to find out exactly what they are.  It's a decent cab.  I don't use it much these days, and in fact it hasn't even been plugged in for about a year.  I recall never going "Wow!" and never going "Eeewwww!" either.  Just a good work horse.

Baltar

Right on bro. Nothing a Rangemaster can't fix. Considering it was $160, I think I did pretty well.
