Besides Electrical Audio which is way too expensive.  Save that kind of recording until a couple albums in.  This would be our first time recording so it's probably going to take way longer then we are expecting but we'd like to get in a real studio not some dude's basement.  Unless this basement is amazing.  If anyone knows anyplace within say a 3 hour drive of Chicago that we can track a 3 piece live and has a decent drum kit on premesis please let me know.

email matt. good guy. Currently has the board from Engine studios in there (I think).

Track down Mr. Elliot Dicks.  You will find no finer sound engineer on the planet.  Perhaps Elliotsound is his business name these days?  Used to work at Semaphore studio perhaps you could start tracking him down wif a call there.

indeed. I interned there for several years. great stuff coming out of there.

Thanks for the recommendations guys.  Our budget is about 1200-1500 so hopefully we can swing it without going over.  Especially because the drummer/guitarist have better jobs then me and can afford to go over heh :(

I think Sunsplitter recorded their last album at Earth Analog which sounds pretty awesome too.

Mr Neutron

A couple of my friends recorded their last album at Earth Analog, and seemed to have nothing but good things to say about it.

This is a link to their bandcamp, they might be able to answer any questions you have:

Is Electrical Audio really that expensive? I was under the impression that they would work with almost any budget. The expensive route is to have Albini do your record, and extra if you want to put his name in your liner notes.

I'm not really a fan of their studio style (I like a little studio trickery, as a listener) but anyway...

Steve Albini $700 per day
Greg Norman $250 per day
Staff $100 per day
Staff Assistant $100 per day
Lodging
Client Offices $150 per day
Tape, Media and Other Services
2" tape $300 per reel

Digital or Analog Transfers estimate
Tape Baking $50 per batch

According to their website which doesn't say anything about working with a budget.  Our budget is around $1200 ($1500 probably max) and we need 2 days probably.  Driving to Champaign from Chicago isn't really all that big of a deal in my opinion I think the half per day cost justifies the drive in case we need another day.

Earth Analog per their site
studio: $250/day

overnight lodging: $25/night

engineering fees:
$200/day for Matt
$100/day for Aaron
$100/day for Kyle

2? tape:
$300/reel of new ATR 2? tape
or
$50/reel if renting a gently used reel

Yeah as long as we can get in under budget it's looking like thats the place I want to go to.  Just need to get a quote and convince the drummer/guitarist it's worth the drive.  Drummer is a big Hum fan though so I like my odds.

I said it before but Sunsplitter III was recorded there and that sounds badass...If anyone remembers LogicalFrank's band that used to post here.

Lumpy

One of my local DJs plays Sunsplitter all the time (WFMU) and they are supposed to play live on the station this Spring.

What's up Logical Frank! Why no Brooklyn show?

Now I just have to convince the drummer it's worth the drive down to Champaign.

it's a great place. the town is so small all you will have to do is hangout and record. it will be an experience!

Yeah I've been down to central/southern IL quite a bit actually rather like it.  In the process of arguing over where to go currently.  Personally I'd rather pay the bit extra to get exactly what we want instead of going somewhere that doesn't understand metal music.

Understood. you should check out the Tummler albums "early man" that was recorded with matt (albeit a long time ago).
