I joined a band "just to play." It keeps me amused. The real challenge is to join a band, WAY out of your realm (in my case, it was a pop punk band fronted by a female) and make it work.

Needless to say, I was a death metal player in a pop punk band, and just ended up harmonizing the shit out of everything. Total blast, and really well received the two times we played before the vocalist and guitarist ended their relationship, and the band.

Someone told me it sounded like a punk band listened to a lot of Iron Maiden.

That seems like a lot of work to play "music" and not music you really want to play but I'm old and grumpy and I complain about having to re set up my jam room to have practice on Sundays.  I should re join the Vintage Amps Forum.  I'd probably fit in now with the Clapton Pipe and Slippers Club.

I sorta think he should do it, it's building relationships with people you could work with in the future (bands don't last forever) and you'll be getting exposure and meeting people. On the other hand (to continue the dating analogy) maybe it's better to be alone than to be in a relationship that's full of major compromises on issues that are important to you.

One store in saigon where they sold some trad. instruments and CDs (I bought CDs). Haven't been inside any music stores in hanoi yet.

All comments are things that have been going through my head so far lol. I kind of feel like I should get out there and make connections with new groups of players, since I feel like all the people I used to play music with just gave up, moved or are playing music I do not like at all. Part of me wants to be a purist and hold out for playing the kind of music I really want to work on and just push harder to write solo material and find people to play it. I'm weighing my feelings about the specific band right now. Even if I pass I may still seek out another band that encourages the more outgoing attitude but fits my personal tastes a bit more. I will so without reservation that all the guys in this death metal band are really cool people and I enjoy hanging out with them. I'm hot and cold on the music itself (even as a genre I like, I would write my own songs in this genre differently), some of the lyrical content and how they organize (or don't) their practices. I am willing to give it a bit more time and see how it goes.

I appreciate the varied responses, it helps clarify my own thoughts on the subject when I hear it coming from someone else.

I enjoy playing best in an ensemble situation as opposed to solo.
I've been fortunate most of my playing career to hook up with like-minded musicians with similar tastes, styles and schedules.
I thanks my lucky stars daily for that.

I don't know what's more difficult..finding those players and forming a good band, or naming said band.

I have band names falling out of my butt. I just can't seem to get anyone to play the kind of music I want. Full time at least, lots of jams or side projects that people eventually forget about.

Yeah, paying $85 a month on top of driving 122 miles round trip once a week would be a bit much. I told them right up front though that I probably couldn't afford $85 a month, but they told me they were planning on getting out of where they are due to rent going up and the place being a dump. I told myself I'd give it a month, 4 practices, and see how I feel and where it's going.

Last night was a resounding success.

Played a strong set. Response and feedback overwhelmingly positive. Good crowd for a Wednesday in mid December!

A dear friend gave me this huge vote of approval: "This is the most amazing thing you've ever been involved in... the music is like something out of a dream!" Wow!!

I like checking out dee Snyder's "house of hair" show on sun nite.  actually, now with devo finesse at 5 and dave koz at 10am. sunday is good radio day heh.

anyway, all dee played for his entire show were metal band versions of xmas carols. that was really cool. he did his homework. seriously obscure stuff was dug up, and I was super pleased above hope on hope that he would play King Diamond's "no presents for xmas" and sonovabitch , he did. fuckin a. I heard king diamond on the fucking iheart radio. fuckin a.

I haven't heard KD on the radio since Z-rock existed in the 80's. z-rock got me through Cleveland state days.  KD, AC/DC, tons of Sabbath, man-o-war heh.  I was crushed when that went off the air.

also got the battery out of the emg schecter, the taylor and metal zone heavy metal....dammit....

3/5 are good.   

they actually put a Duracell alkaline in the taylor.  not some heavy duty battery from wing wang erectric company like every other product had in it..

I do not want corrosive exploded battery spooge inside my toys.
