What was that place people were buying cheap knock off pickups on from the old board?  I got a BC Rich bass which is a copy of a P-Bass and the pickups are shot.  I don't play bass much so I don't want to spend much on the pickups but I don't want total cheese dick quality either.

Thanks

Choppers Music, sell from their website and their eBay store, Diezel bass pickups, which are some solid sounding generics, check their FatPole models.

You often have to ask what they have, as they sometimes don't get everything on their site.

youre almost guaranteed thinking about GFS

Straight up, 24 dollars for a set of pickups is boner inducing.

They sound good, too. I like those Dragonfire pickups.

Thanks guys that's what I was looking for.  I'm going to build in an on-Board Buffer, Bazz Fuss and put in a Big Muff Tone Control.  Should be fun!

I've always had good luck buying pickups off E-Bay.

Get them way cheaper if you can be patient, heh. But cheap enough you can buy several and try them out.

As for P-bass pickups I've never really experimented much. Have been happy with Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders, which should be plentiful and affordable on Fleabay

I have a GFS lil' Puncher in the bridge of my tele and a buddy of mine has a Mean 90 in his SG. It's amazing that they don't charge more for their pickups, they sound amazing.

Anybody have any experience with the Humbucker sized P90's on Guitarfetish.com? Specifically , is there much difference between the Dream 90's and the Mean 90's?

I was planning on replacing the pups in my Epi Worn SG and Ibanez AGS83B hollow body with P90's.  I am not as concerned with the SG (i know that either will probably sound fine) but I'm not sure if these would be ok to put in a hollow body or not either. Do you guys think they would give me more feedback than i could handle in the Ibanez?

I have an Epiphone Casino which is a hollow body with P-90s feedback isn't too much of a problem as long as you're not right in front of your amp and playing with high gain super distortion.  At cleaner sounds its no problem at all.

Go for it P-90s rule, I have 2 Epiphone SGs with P-90s too.

so how many people read the thread and saw he was looking for bass pickups?

Spook, don't know if this would float your boat, but I see StewMac has a P-Bass pickup kit. $16 plus whatever shipping is.

Very cool.  I would love to wind my own pickups some day.  I need to look into that and see what I need to do that.

I have not decided yet.  I'm going to check out some Ebay auctions and see if I can snag somthing really cheap but if that takes to long I might just go for the GFS pickups because they seem to have a pretty good following of people who say they sound good but it is just a project for fun so I might just throw a set of those cheap one in from chopper music until get the stuff to wind my own if I go that rout.  So really I'm still thinking it over.

Yeah, unfortunately it includes everything but the pickup wire, which they want $30 for a spool, I imagine you might find it locally cheaper. Or you can recycle unwind an old motor or alternator, or something else with a lot of fine wire in it, as I recall alternators probably don't have #40AWG wire in them.

There was an article on blogspot or instructable, about someone making pickups from exisiting coils of wire on solenoids, relays and the like, but it was geared towards more DIY instruments, cigar box guitars etc.

Hey if Brian May can do it.

spookstrickland

Brian May was so cool.  I've always wanted to build an entire guitar from scratch like he did.  That was just an amazing feet back then and still is.  I wonder how to go about winding the pickups, are their small hobby sized winders or will I have to rig something up?

I was actually responding to hayseed about his thinking about P-90s in his guitars.

Don't know how I mssed this Spook, sorry. Haven't seen any hobby winders, but I believe you can do it with an old turntable?

Resurrecting thread, as Chopper don't seem to have as many pickup choices now, and Dragonfir is blah :( >:(

clockwork green

Maybe we should revive the free stuff thread and see if anyone has free pickups and other stuff.

That's a good idea.  I'm going to be moving soon and I have to clear out my storage locker so it looks like the bc rich is not going to get put back together.  I'm going to take some pics and maybe some one has some smaller type guitar stuff they would want to trade for it.
