And cheap too. I'm looking for the best sounding SG copy I can find that wont break the bank. It's OK if it's not currently made as long is it is still plentiful in the used market.
thanks
John got the Xaviere shortly before he departed, sounded good.
Well, if you can find an Eastwood Corona...he stopped making 'em, which surprised me. The fretboard has zero fucking radius. Flat like a Gibson Sonex, and fast. But I haven't seen many used.

I lke my eastwood baritone well enough i guess, but its very heavy. feels like the body is made of some kind of compressed really dense material??
the plastic nut was trash and had to go. I swapped out the chinese p90's for lollars, and the cheap chinese toy pots for CTS..and noticed NO difference in sound on that so ...i guess those chinese p90's were okay.

"Stock: Closed Out"
This must mean they have some, but that's it. $399 is about what I paid for mine.
Hello? Rondo? Agile Valkyrie III? http://www.rondomusic.com/product815.html I have one and dig the hell out of it. I've had Gibson and Epiphone SGs and this one was more to my liking.
If that isn't cheap enough http://www.rondomusic.com/zekeblack.html you have the Douglas Zeke. I'd guess it's gonna need new PUPs though. But, it's $99.
Are you looking for mahogany specifically?

I've thought about getting one of those too. If they had one in Transparent Cherry Red I'd probably buy one.
I wish rondo would do their bodies differently. More like a traditional sg rather than esp viper. If they did a full sg clone/knockoff with the same specs as my al-3000 (Where applicable), I'd be all over it.

Look for an older Valkyrie on eBay. They used to be more of an SG clone, but I believe Gibson sent some lawyers knocking on their door. Something happened because they changed their headstocks too. In an age of internet buying, I think Rondo puts a bigger dent in Gibson's Epi sales and Fender's Squier sales than either of them would like. Back to the topic, if you can find an older Agile Valkyrie, they are alot closer to an actual SG than the current version.
Valkyrie 2 I believe. If I remember right, the original Valkyrie was pretty much a spot on copy except for the headstock.
I have a less deluxe (flat, not carved top) version of this guitar and I love it:
Or there's these. The pic is the 7 string version, but they came in 6 strings too. DeArmond by Guild. They're usually fairly reasonable. There is a Squier version too that usually goes pretty cheap.

It's an Arbor Lyric. Found a link with them:
http://www.musiciansbuy.com/Arbor_Guitars_Products_at_MusiciansBuy.html
I got mine off of ebay new a few years ago for about $150 and it's way better than any $150 guitar should be. Nice set neck, good frets. Had to change the tuners as they were crappy, but that's about it. I changed the pickup cover on mine & had my father inlaw cut me a black pickguard, but that was just for looks. I've had a lot of guitars come and go, but this one is a keeper.
I'm really tempted to build up an sg from that kit but I know nothing about gluing a neck joint.
Id just buy a 70's gibson. The SGII's are still fairly cheap. Like this one that i got for $375 (ten years ago). ive seen em recently for 5-6 bills tho...absouletly wonderful guitar great neck, shittiest pickup ever (gibson minibuckers), but you replace those wiht the lollar minibuckers and your golden.
TBH, I see Gibson SG's (the specials) for steals these days. An brand new SG Special (HB form) for $450 on CL the other day. If you really don't want that, I reccommend that Squier clone.

El Corazon/Graceland/The Off Ramp?
yeah for a while they were having shows in the front room. I am guessing that photo was the last time I set foot in that joint and thats was probably I dunno 5 years ago? i think its changed names about 5 times since then too.
i remember when i visited seattle a long time before moving here and the place was called the offramp, saw a show there and thought it was a pretty good club
I've seen a number of shows in their front room. Botch (under the name Everyone Gets Laid) and Thrones come to mind. Dead Low Tide, too.

i think that place is mentioned in the TAD documentary. the singer from ZEKE recounts some story, i want to say.
its a fairly well know seattle club. Is it the club in the movie Singles when Alice in CHains is playing? I cant remember.
i think that front room was a new deal? they were serving food too i remember...grilled cheeses , tatertots??, fries. That photo was from a sorta lo fi punk band I was in called Master Blaster with Adrian from Valis. fun band, drummer moved to portland about 6 months into it tho.
I shared a practice space with Dead Low Tide breifly when I was playing in a band called the Bronze. Think I was in that band about 3 months . that space was right off Pike and i wanna say 12th but I have no sense of seattle downtown streets. Its fairly near the Vomet.
Crybaby Studios, or the Chophouse? I used to practice at the Chophouse. Everyone else I knew was like 150 feet away at Crybaby.
i think it was/is called the chophouse. (totally awesome name ::))
Had horrible bleed thru the walls, you could really hear your neighbors...which in our case was a losing battle for them as we were stupidly loud. i think Coady and Jarred started up BB about year after I was in there with DLT.
I wish Big Business had never joined the melvins...I didnt really know them all that well but I was really glad they were seattle-ites and playing in local bands.
chovie, what group were you in again?
I believe he was in Soundhoney or Mudgarden, or maybe Green Lovebone? Mother River? Gottdam heroin.
Nevetheless, ChovieD's most renowned outfit was Kung Pao.
Kung Pao in NYC for 5? years, In Seattle for 3 months it was the Bronze, then after that Master Blaster, then Musk Ox , then All Time High..and since then about a half dozen country-americana-ish bands that arent worth mentioning. supposedly in a doom band called Brutus now, but we havent had practiced #1 yet.

hey thanks M&B! Kung Pao played the first 4-5 emissions fests, including the very first year and the one in chicago a year or so later. missed a couple years then reunited for 2004? so what was the first emissions fest like? No patio, no food vendors, much smaller crowds..but still a blast.

What is the brand? It's the same guitar as my Arbor I posted.
Branded Gould. Set neck. All this shit comes out the same factory. you just tack on your logo and headstock shape to order.
How much?
I know that I'll have to run and hide as soon as I post this but...... I got an epiphone sg from a good friend of mine for 80 bucks. This thing is awesome to me. I really like the way it plays and holds a tune. Doesn't sound tooooo great but I'm pretty sure thats the shitty electronics. The thing is this is an older model and I had to play probably 50 different epiphones before I found one I liked.

Bolt-on or set neck? If it's a set neck you did pretty good for $80. I've owned a couple of the Korean made ones and they were solid. Nothing wrong with an Epi at the right price.
I've played some really nice epi's and the old ones are amazing.
I like some squiers too, both companies did a great job with their low budget brands.
*Broken Record Alert *
There are different quality levels across the different Epiphones, all the way from better-than-newer/many-Gibsons down to the 79 dollar bolt-neck cheapies with pre-warped necks...also, what Choves said (some of the Squires are excellent)
I like those pink/pastel-blue one p/u copies in this thread....especially the pink one <3

I've always loved the look and options available on the Reverend guitar line. Kind of like mashups of offset Fenders, SGs, semi-hollow Les Pauls, etc.

That V has the shittiest balance of all time.
Worse than a BC Rich Widow.
Freightshakin Bob loved his silver Sensei, 'til he bought his Les Paul.
Epiphone's alright. The Epi necks could be more subtly shaped. They're good for customizing.
How 'bout an Epiphone Tony Iommi SG ? Those are pretty cool.
I really like the JHS Vintage Reissue VS6...

spook, you start alot of these kind of threads. Do you ever actualy get the item your asking about?
Dont get me wrong, I phantasize about gear too and love to talk aboot it, Im probably guilty of the same thing in some cases, just curious if these things ever become reality for you, or are we just going on for 5 pages of recommnedations for daydreaming purposes?

I dunno, mine sort of just faded, without getting any of the gear I felt I had to have, I wonder if it maybe corresponded with me playing more, I can't really pinpoint when it just went.
Perhaps the cure for GAS is to play more, or play out more.
usually i can wait my GAS out. That said... Im off to find vexter probe pedals today and try em. :-[
Hemi, maybe it's because you work on a lot of gear? I know mine has dropped since I started buying stuff to resell.
I bought a blemished SG heritage cherry Xaviere from Guitar Fetish.
I spent a $100 after I bought it to have the neck straightened and the frets fixed and the guitar brought up to snuff. It's a nice SG copy and better than my Epi SG Special. It is solid Mahogany, has nice PUPS, a set neck and bound rosewood fretboard. So for the buck forty I paid, plus the $100 I spent and I also added Wilkinson EZ Lock tuners for $25, I have very nice SG. :)
Do these non-Gibson SGs sound like Gibson SGs? I'm interested in a low budget SG, but not for the shape... for the sound. (big Alice Cooper fan... both guitar players played SGs)
I was at Guitar Center today and saw the Epiphone SG-400 (looked nice in cherry) and the SG Jr. (one pickup, the faded yellow one looked like it was made out of plastic). The 400 had nicely finished frets. I didn't want to touch the Jr, although I like the idea of one pickup, in theory.
So which of these lo-budget guitars sounds the most like a Gibson SG?

They also played gold top Les Pauls with p90's and Gretsch jets at different times. Plus I am sure that there were other studio owned guitars used on recordings.
I have an early 200's SG400 custom shop model from Epi. Stock pickups even. Sounds fantastic, plays just as well. For 200 clams, it was a no brainer. Not quite as bright and cutting as my bro's Gibson sg custom, but damn close for 1/10th of the price.

Losing the stock pickups will sort that, think the stock ones went for output at the cost of high end, in a pretty crude way I think, hot but dull, you can get hot and lively with some nice ones.

It's made by an unknown company called Yarinoo.Funny but when I first saw it displayed in the store window I was flat broke, but then a month later it became mine.
Anyways it's in serious need for restoration at the moment. Bottom pickup is broken and needs to be fixed as well as the toggle switch that broke off. This pic was taken back in '06 before some real damage was done.

Oddly enough, the fuckin bridge bucker died today. I hate it when I NEED to buy gear. ;D The stock pickups do sound good with lots of gain, not so much clean. I will replace the set with a Burstbucker 1/2 combo. I sold an identical CS sg400 a few years back with that combo. The guitar was that rad Pelham Blue with small pickguard. I still miss that guitar. Now I can make this one sound the same. I think I'll do a pushpull pot to reverse phase while I'm at it so I can get my peter green similarity tone going on.

ive been wanting a 400 for a while and have been told
(not by seller) that its same as 400 with a bolt on neck
i know thats a big difference, but is a 310 unplayable in anyones eyes(ears)
pass!
How much?
• If it's 50 bucks, hell yeah
• If it's 500, keep looking
?
There is a big drop in quality between the 310 and 400 line. I'd say pass, unless under $50 like stated above.
Better off getting a set neck Jay Turser for G-310 money.

ill let it pass
definately not $50
and its a long drive to try it out

^^ kind of what I was wondering after reading through the thread. I've got a 69 sg special that is hard to beat. It sounds amazing, and the way it's built and aged is hard to describe. The neck binding feels like part of the wood. After picking up many old gibsons I have yet to find one that feels the same way. Most feel like the binding, frets, etc are tacked onto the wood. Even LP customs that I've tried have not felt the same. Modern guitars that look like an SG??? Never touched one that didn't feel like a toy. Too often, a cheap plastic toy. I have a hard time believing that those look-alikes sound like the real thing. Get a real gibson sg or an epiphone at the very least.
Ideally, I would suggest looking for an actual gibson or high quality japanese copy from the 70's or earlier. IF it's really about the tone, that is. They look cool regardless.
heh the SG is the best!
