You should get a battery and start using your Crybaby wah-wah more that would be rad.

Hmmm, I would also get a delay pedal, preferably analog, but maybe the boys in here would know alot better about that.

What kind of sounds are you interested in, it's like you're asking for recommendations for good beer. Too many to name.

I like Bells Oberon though ;)

I'm not a fan of Big Muffs. What about a superfuzz clone (type of fuzz). Those are pretty rad. Or buy that Meathead that's listed here, that will melt people's faces off, paired up with your Tele. Very vicious sounding fuzz.

I'd try out some kind of Fuzz Face variant. Which one depends on how much you want to spend, there's a lot of cool stuff that takes off from that design. My favorite fuzz pedal I own or have owned (among a bunch of boutique stuff) is a vintage FF clone my friend made for me with NOS parts.

I'd recommend a RAT with the LM308 chip
an EHX Q-Tron
I have more fun with these two pedals alone than anything else I have

The RAT can almost get into fuzz territory, I got rid of my muffs a long time ago b/c of mine. As a matter of fact my RAT has knocked "better" boutique dirt pedals off my board.

An Octave pedal can get you a pretty cool synthy sound if you're into that. I use the discontinued and analog Boss OC-2, you can swipe them for $50 all day.

I'd also check into the Tech 21 Character Series if your into amp modeling
http://www.tech21nyc.com/products/sansamp/characterseries.html (http://www.tech21nyc.com/products/sansamp/characterseries.html)
Each one is supposed to sound like a particular brand amp, I have the VT Bass and it cops an Ampeg tone pretty convincingly IMHO.

A chorus can always be cool and I love the way delay sounds on guitar, the MXR Carbon Copy seems like a legit analog one that is still in production.

Haha, I basically just posted the meat and potatoes of my whole pedalboard except I don't have a delay.

Go shopping. Go to the local guitar stores, and try a bunch of stuff. The Behringer advice was good-  you could buy one of everything, figure out what you like, and then buy a sturdy version.

my intention is to try all this stuff out first, i just want some advice on where to start. asking for help in guitar shops when you have a vagina can suck sometimes. either they ignore me because they figure i'm not going to buy anything, or they tell me to get the danelectro stuff because it comes in all these great colours!!

thanks, people. i'm makin a list.

Forgot to mention that, my EQ pedal is the secret to using a RAT for me as well.

And remember, the ones that are currently in production are garbage. Cannot say LM308 chip enough.

you know what's weird? i have an early 90s lm308 rat and an early 2000s non 308 and i like them both for different things. the 308 sounds more squishy, whereas the non 308 sounds more hard and fizzy.

I just picked up a hudson electronics "stroll on" fuzz. It's a tonbender mk2 clone. fuckin awesome vintage sounding pedal here. I was in vegas yesterday and had to check out cow town guitars. cool little shop and they had plenty of cool fuzzes to try. 200 out the door. highly recommended to anyone looking for thick vintage 70's fuzz tones and killer sustain.

Analog Alien makes the Fuzzbubble 45.  It's basically a 2 in 1 fuzz with a Pete and Jimi side.  I would also suggest you look into Analog Man's stuff.  Particularly the Sunface NKT275, Astro tone and Peppermint.  These will all melt faces.

and as mentioned. if you like someones sound, track down the gear..someone knows or roadied that tour  heh..

haters gonna hate.

the DAM meathead sounds pretty awesome, too. goddammit.

i'm thinking of an MXR 10 band eq, an octave pedal (probably a boss oc-2 'cause they're pretty cheap on the interwebs), and some kinda fuzzy overdrivey fuzz thing.

Post by: Lumpy on July 30, 2011, 12:02:04 AM
The Meathead sounds best when it's turned way up (around 3 o'clock*). I couldn't find any clips on Youtube where they had it up past noon (I didn't look at every clip though). Also, lots of fuzz/distortion sounds cool at bedroom volume, but sound like sloppy poop when you get real loud (IMO). The Meathead doesn't sound like anything special at low volumes, but sounds better and better the louder you go. Also, it (the pedal itself) is loud as fuck (lots of gain) so turning the dial up even more is probably counter-intuitive. So I figure there are people with Meatheads who don't even realize what all that pedal can do, if they're not using it in a loud band.

*even "the Captain" says that, if you know what I'm talkin' about ;)

You (strangelight) seem like you are more into classic rock or retro guitar tones, based on your Townsend comment -- I think the Meathead is probably more over the top than what you want (?)
Title: Re: recommend me some pedals
Post by: strangelight on July 30, 2011, 12:28:14 AM
nuh uh, man. i like a lot of doom and sludge and noise. i like some classic rock, but it's not the tone i'm looking for. i'm not really looking to sound like townshend, i actually just want a toy that'll give me a thick and heavy fuzz.

but, i'm not in a band or playing live. the soundproofing in my building is non-existent so i'm using an iso cab and cranking anything up too loud might blow the fuse on it. if the meathead really shines at 3 o'clock, but i'm never gonna be able to crank it up that high, then i guess i should save my pennies.
Title: Re: recommend me some pedals
Post by: jibberish on July 30, 2011, 01:00:45 AM
SL, have you ever thought of getting a 1 watt tube amp so you can experience a fully driven tube sound first? get a 1X12 or even a 2X12 so it sounds big, but not loud.

having a super clean amp, like a stereo etc enables full on effects treatments.

having a fully driven tube already has a "sound" and your selection of what you want to do to that sound changes.
Title: Re: recommend me some pedals
Post by: strangelight on July 30, 2011, 01:10:55 AM
i've had my peavey classic 50/212 for about 11 years and i've had it cranked plenty of times, so i know what a fully driven tube sounds like. my new place and the sound issue is fairly recent (since march of this year). the iso cab is my attempt to still crank it, but i've heard that you can't really dime out on the amp because it'll blow the fuse.

a 1 watt tube amp and a 1x12 cab would still be too loud for my place. i can hear my neighbour's tv louder and clearer than my own and i can hear people's conversations in the hallway as though they're standing right next to me in my apartment. it's pretty ridiculous and i wish i'd known it was going to be a problem before i moved in, but whatever.

all of that doesn't really change the fact that i'd like some pedals that don't need to be cranked to reach their full potential.
Title: Re: recommend me some pedals
Post by: jibberish on July 30, 2011, 02:02:52 AM
ok then you definitely are in the "clean " school. actually that is easier to choose since the sound is all pedal and you want your amplification transparent as possible to not mess your effects sounds up. thats what i do. i get ungodly nasty stuff going with multiple effects and usually i play it very quietly through a very clean sound system so i can hear exactly what all the effects are doing.

you can also overdrive the inputs on a tube amp if it has that option, or use a drive pedal to see what level of warmth you get from that. here again, if the amp is adding to the sound, you have to re-listen to your chain vs clean.

real easy to get mud.  i can show you many ways to screw up the track with too many effects

btw, dont be on the defensive here. everyone is trying to help, sling ideas around.  these people are great. and for someone like me, being able to actually get feedback from actual band people and those who actually know wtf they are doing has been invaluable over the years. im sure it will be for you too. some peeps have everything gearwise, some of us have less heh, or waaaay less, but irrelevant if you are making music.
Title: Re: recommend me some pedals
Post by: strangelight on July 30, 2011, 02:13:56 AM
i didn't mean to sound defensive, just trying to clarify what i'm looking for and what my situation is. i was digging the meathead so i'm a bit bummed that lumpy said it's at its best when it's loud, since i won't be able to use it that way for the next 2-4 years.

you all have been super helpful and i now have a wishlist way bigger than my budget.  ;D

Those Tone Wicker muffs ain't expensive, don't have to be super pushed, and definitely bring the fuzz... I'm in the market for a new dist/gain area, too...

diggin' on the Subdecay F-bomb.

left field idea:  for bedroom playing, have you looked into using your PC or laptop for effects?  once you have some program ..like reaper, you can process realtime, especially if it is only 1 track for live playing.

the selection of software effects is humongous, maybe bigger. like those VST plugins etc.  someone may have written something that sounds like what you want.
Title: Re: recommend me some pedals
Post by: strangelight on July 30, 2011, 02:45:43 AM
i haven't tried the computer route yet. i don't have a digital mixer amp/fx modeler for a direct line in, so i've never tried it. it's an option, but i'm hoping the isolation cabinet and a pair of headphones can help me keep it analog.
Title: Re: recommend me some pedals
Post by: Lumpy on July 30, 2011, 04:10:01 AM
I'm probably just being a bit snobby about the Meathead being cranked. (look at me, I have a Meathead) They are great for severe distortion but you can certainly use them at any level. I was just impressed with the string definition and texture when it's cranked (no mud). Kind of unusual IMO. If you can use it in other ways, more power to you. It's expensive though - around 200-225 bucks for a used one (new ones impossible to find basically) and it has only one knob... not that tweakable. Meathead would be good for a band like Sollubi, not so good for a band like Pearls & Brass (uh, maybe for solos or something). You can find something more flexible for less money, they are boutique-snobby, so, they are pricey. But ther just so happens to be one for sale in the forum, so I thought I would mention it. Seriously, go shopping, once you have a list of possibilities. There has to be a guitar store with boutique stomp boxes, in your area.

As far as recording, if you are on a Mac then Garageband should be free or downloadable. For PC a lot of people like Reaper I think (?) which has a free trial period you can keep renewing, or buy it for like 60 bucks. Then you just need a decent interface, and there are buttloads of choices. You already have the most expensive element (computer). Use your isolation cab or experiment with direct line in (and your stompboxes can stay in your signal chain, why not). Garage band has amp modeling, Reaper probably does. Will you record your slick-sounding album, probably not, but you can record a good sounding demo, or write songs, document ideas, work on developing arrangements, etc. Very useful, and you can do it without disturbing the neighbors.

my most handiest toy is a POS little 12ch behringer mixer. it was like $100 with some effects even. it goes output via instrument level or via line level RCA jacks. you get the little stereo RCA female->1/8"stereomini jack converter from radioshaft for $5 and that plugs right into soundcard line in on any computer.

i have a firewire card but havent really needed a nice analog->digital i/o mixer yet. also, if you ever do step outside, it is a real mixer, powers mics and all.

ahhh speaking of outside..
i'm doing something you may really like also:(in the "free me from noise level constraints" train of thought...)
i'm shopping a camping generator, like 1500watts-2500watts range, like maybe $300-400 or so (unless you get a honda at 4x the price)
ponder this: have camping generator, will travel with small rig any-fucking-where out in the boonies/park system i want. eh eh eh noonan? think of the possibilities..go to real doom place like a dripping cave or the middle of the lake on a boat in a full moon...or ..who knows. i want to go to brandywine falls. they have a dripping cave. some dude just fell off and died there..\m/ mmmmm ambience...or the 150yr old sphinx carving by whipp's ledges. you expect to see elves there.
Title: Re: recommend me some pedals
Post by: strangelight on July 30, 2011, 09:12:59 AM
are you gonna take the generator and go brown out in a cave? fucking sweet. do it.

lumpy, thanks for more clarification. the meathead is kinda pricey so it would depend on how many other things i want to get at the same time. one of the reasons i like the pharaoh is because, as you said, it's very tweakable.

i was also gonna grab a monitor mixer and just go straight to headphones, but i've got a macbook pro... i should probably really utilize it. i'll check out that behringer mixer. thanks for the suggestion.

The Meathead is overpriced and almost imposible to find.  I've played it, it's pretty cool but not any louder than the Devi Ever pedals and those small ones are priced to sell.

I have the Torn's Peaker-$99

Hyperion-$99

And if you want to drop some money..
Silver Rose, made special order for Billy Corgan
$375

She's giving away a custom Hyperion fuzz...

^^ Probably a good idea to get a few different flavors of less spendy fuzz... a Fuzz Face variant, Superfuzz variant, Rat variant, you already have the Big Muff, maybe an octave fuzz, etc. One pedal is probably not going to satisfy all your fuzz needs. It's nice to have variety. If you can buy used, your money goes further. An inexpensive octave fuzz is the Danelectro French Toast (about 35 dollars). The Guyatone TZ2 "The Fuzz" is a good inexpensive Superfuzz clone (about 50-60 dollars). At some point you might start specializing in  high end pedals of a specific flavor but you probably won't regret having some other pedals around, just like you probably don't regret having your Big Muff around, even if you don't use it all the time.

How come you're not already in a band? Maybe when school is finished?

I traded my Ram Head Muff clone for a DAM Meathead clone some guy had. I honestly can't tell the difference between the real one my friend has and mine. I guess what I am saying is, don't waste over $400 on one.

If you're still looking at a fuzz face pedal, I reccommend Oxfuzz

At some point you might start specializing in  high end pedals of a specific flavor but you probably won't regret having some other pedals around, just like you probably don't regret having your Big Muff around, even if you don't use it all the time.

hmmm... this sounds like a good idea. i'm willing to blow up to $400 on pedals, so i could get a bunch of cheapies or one kinda pricey one and a few cheapies. i can't really do much until i'm back in the states and can try this stuff out, so i'll throw some of these on the list.

at the moment, i've got my eye on a boss OC-2 on ebay. two dudes are already fighting over it but there's only 3 hours left and it's still at $28. i figure if i can get it for under $50... unless one of you gentlemen tells me this is a terrible pedal before then.  ;D

The OC-2 is cool, if you have a use for it (it's not a fuzz, just a low octave). I don't think anybody here would suggest *not* spending money on pedals ;)

Post by: strangelight on July 30, 2011, 08:33:35 PM
i was gonna get the octave and a fuzz, rather than an octave fuzz.

my monies are rapidly disappearing. i'm also grabbing some new cans and a mackie onyx blackjack.

Octave fuzzes are usually octave-up (a few can do both... the "Octron" I think does both) but mostly octave-up. Think Hendrix solos (hear it best playing above the 12th fret) and the octave-up is kinda subtle. The OC-2 is a for-real octave-down, watch those speakers, hey-that's-an-additional-octave, where's the bass player hiding, burly beef-maker. It can do 1 octave down and 2-down (ulp) but it's all blendable. If you want instant bass player, or some crazy thickness, it's cool. For octave up & down (no fuzz) I think the Electro Harmonix POG (poly octave generator) maybe?

i knew the oc-2 was 1 and 2 octaves down, but i didn't know an octave fuzz was an octave up. whatever, just bought it.  8)

crappy part is it's gonna be delivered while i'm still out of the country. should fit in my mailbox though.

The POG actually generates it's on wooly distortion. If you go watch that video in the "Deaner's lucite LP" thread, you can hear it a little bit, with my shitty playing.

I love that pedal.

Post by: Baltar on July 30, 2011, 11:36:38 PM
Those POG's are wicked.  The Micro POG is a good choice, I had the Boss OC-2 and it was ok, but it doesn't track as nice as the POG's.  The French Toast is a killer grab too.
Title: Re: recommend me some pedals
Post by: strangelight on July 31, 2011, 04:38:23 PM
micro pog looks cool. i'm gonna test it when i get back to the states. and the french toast seems neato too, although i've always been worried about the construction on danelectro pedals. then again, i ain't gigging with it, so i don't know why the snobbery.

the devi ever shoegazer has made me all hot in the pants and wet in the ears.

Ron makes his copy of the Foxx Tone Machine, which is a better build than the French Toast.  The octave is footswitchable which beats the FT and the original hands down.  The POG is really cool because it does the Hendrix octave thing and organ-like tones too.

I dig the Pharaoh Fuzz, but I'm hoping to snag a Machine Head Code Green first:

http://www.machineheadpedals.com/CG.html

I have a proclivity to like loud, abrasive, odd, and therefore only occasionally useful pedals.  But maybe the Code Green will buck that trend.

Also, re: octave pedals, I'm in love with the MI Audio Pollyanna, but they dont pop up used often, and new stock is pretty dry.

Behringer makes a good superfuzz clone (same as that watson which is a univox superfuzz clone..I own the original Unviox, and a couple clones). you can find em new for $30, the behringer that is, the univox will be $300.
Dano French Toast is a Foxx tone machine clone. Used for $15 or new for $30ish? Its good, plastic case but you are not giggin so no worries there.

Octave pedals like the oc 2 suck IMHO.
why? because there are many pedals that will handle the octave AND so much more.
Look at the new  boss ps6 pitch shifter for example.

if its octave fuzz you want...then the french toast at $15 is amongst the best Ive heard.

I love octave fuzz but not for the octave which you can almost never discern anyway. i love them for the overtones. The superfuzz (pete again) IS an octave fuzz, but the upper octave is so subtle it just provides this massive girth instead of sounding like hendrix octave fuzz.(octavia)

another great octave fuzz where you can barely hear the octave is the Octane by Zvex. MASSIVE sounding. $300 tho.

my favorite effect is probably the phaser. a phase 90 is a beautiful thing.

I would say a guitarist should have at least one delay also...in this category for what your doin, i woud recommend the line6 delay modeler...you can have alot of fun with the built in looper and get classic delay models that sound pretty good. its expensive tho.

I would skip the 10 band EQ.

the cheap dano pedals used are an excellent way to try stuff out. the tremolo, phaser, compressor, fuzzes and uni vibe clones are all great from them and $15 each all day on CL.

dont spend on fancy boutique stuff till you have a better idea of what sounds you like.

have fun

Chovie speaks the truth!  I haven't looked for a French Toast in a while, but if I see one for $15-$30, I'd snag one in a heartbeat and re-house it.

http://pedalpartsplus.com/ (http://pedalpartsplus.com/)

PPP is wicked, I re-housed 2 of my fuzzes including my Hairpie which is my avatar.  The Behringer is a really good way to go too.  They clone a LOT of the EHX pedals.  And again a phase 90 is a great choice.

The EHX Memory Boy is priced to move and has an expression pedal output without having to bolt an old wah to the side.  Also the MXR Carbon Copy is comparable to the Mem Boy and comes in a nice small green metal-flake housing.

damn, e9th/chovied that is too many pedals for one guy to own. You're lucky at finding scores!

btw, I still stand behind this stroll on fuzz by hudson electronics. This guy who builds them is down the road from the D.A.M guy. He picked up where DAM left off when they discontinued their mk2 clone. I can't say enough about this thick, chewy(their word, but it's so apt) fuzz. Supposedly they are becoming highly sought after like the DAM pedals, so I would get one while they're reasonable. I'll post some clips when I get a chance.

Until a couple years ago I only had 3 really cheap pedals. A boss DS2, a $15 Ibanez digital delay, and a boss tuner.
then something snapped and i started collectiing. i have an OC personaity so it wasnt long before they began piling up. I live in Seattle, but all of the good vintage pedals, the rams head big muff, the mutron, the Mosrite Fuzzrite, the Univox Superfuzz, Oilcan delays, etc etc have come from old men in little places like Sullivan , IL, Waycross, GA, Bumfuck texas etc. "I got some old rusty effects I used to use back in the hippie days, they sound like woodstock to me...maybe youd be  interested in those?"...oh you bet I am kind sir. ;D

the rams head, the superfuzz and the wa machine were only $100 each, you cannot by a new fuzz for that, let alont the holy grail of epic vintage fuzzes. The fuzzrite was free.."maybe you can fix this son"...um yessir i will try. Tel ray oil can delay...$75. and so on.

I dont pay big money for anything ever. cept that pog2 I bought new and never use  :'(

Ive also built just about everything in the BYOC catalog and enjoy some of those pedals very much, even side by side with their vinatge counterparts. some of them are spot on and they were fun to build and paint.

rock on people...rock on

They stopped making em (Spring Chicken) I think... they're supposed to come out with another mini reverb soon, I think I heard that. Those little Malekko half-size pedals are cool looking, if I was starting from scratch I would def. consider going that route... your whole pedalboard could be the size of a briefcase.

They make the chicklet now which is really nice. It doesn't do surf but it's nice for rock although I'm probably going to sell mine because the TC Electronic Hall of Fame sounds so good and is super versatile. The 616 delay is also really nice and is capable of crazy oscillations but yet another TC pedal, the Flashback has bumped it from my board.

Anyone have experience with the Blackout Twosome? They made a limited edition one when you could run the musket and the fix'd together and even switch which went first but they said for $30 they'll their standard orange one. The proguitarshop clip sounds good (nice to see an electric wizard riff)and there is a good video of it being used with bass. I haven't heard any clips with lower tuned guitars (other than the bass) but that seems to be the Achilles heal of many fuzz pedals. Two-in-ones don't often sound that great but I figure that these are two excellent pedals on their own so it should work. With this and my Wattson super fuzz that should cover most of my fuzz needs for any given gig.

Thanks..

as for sound samples of the Black Forest...I am sending a newer tweeked prototype to Wino next week for another recording session. I think it will be the final tweek. I think I have it where he wants it...when he gives the final OK, then I'll record some clips...

Shameless plug for BlackArts again.  Carlos got it and won't let me have it, buh-wah.  Seriously though, he gives it the thumbs up.  Too many pedals, so little time.  He sold is Lunar DLX to get the Pharoh.

Right to left: Skreddy Echo, Pitchblack, Pharoh, MKII clone.

Got my Pharaoh today; seems pretty nice so far (have not had that much time to tweak with its settings). Mine has an unmarked diode switch (sold as the germanium version at Tone Factor); anyone know which setting corresponds to what on that version? (my guess is: up: no diodes, middle: germanium, down: silicon).

up germanium, middle no diodes, down silicon, i believe.

Nice! If I didn't already have a couple muff styled fuzzes I'd get one of them. Still might down the road. Btw, a Catalinbread manx into a dirty Verellen is absolutely lick it up delicious  :P

Mmmm... watermelon. It's nice a wooly. I can palm mute, and do pinch harmonics on it. LOVE.

There is a pretty huge boost in the diode off mode, and there is a sizable boost in the silicon mode, the GE side, which I don't think I'll be using unless I do some bluesy stoner jams, can hit just a little over unity, but not enough for my liking. I love the sound, though. It does muff, it does overdrive, it does low end. I love it. Great pedal. AMAZING CUSTOM PAINT JOB, the screening is killer, the fit and finish is FANTASTIC. Very rugged, feels real solid. I'll buy another one here soon, for my bass board. 9.9/10.

I nearly bought a pharaoh and LSTR but decided to go with the Blackout Twosome with the "very special" mod to run them both at the same time. I like the single power input and the switch for changing which one goes first. If it doesn't work for me I'll sell it try some black arts but I'd prefer to save room on my board. A black arts box with all three pedals in it would be pretty awesome.

Ask him, I know he's built a Pharaoh/Rat in one box, I see no reason he wouldn't do it... his handle is The Riffer, on here... or get him at his email...

Are they stackable, Mark? $$$?
Title: Re: recommend me some pedals
Post by: clockwork green on September 05, 2011, 03:42:26 AM
Seems like the overdriver and either one of the Pharaoh/LSTR would stack better than the pharaoh and LSTR together but who knows till you actually try it.
Title: Re: recommend me some pedals
Post by: The Riffer on September 05, 2011, 11:34:53 AM
I plan for the double to stack either way with a flip of a switch.

IMO, the Black Forest and Pharaoh are the combination that sounds best, for my style, the LSTR/Pharaoh combination is too much.YMMV depending upon how much saturation/compression you like.

two words, noise gate. I went from a Zoom hyperfuzz to the Pharaoh, and I'm so not used to the high gain noise...
