Just to followup: I really don't care for the Xaviere cheapie strings I got a case of. They just sound lifeless and flat to me. Weird, because I never put too much stock into there being big differences in strings before. Held off on reviewing them until I tried them on at least three of my guitars. Just not cutting it.

I guess I'll go back to buying the Ernie Balls I usually buy and use these as emergency I'm-broke-as-fuck backups or something.

I'm digging Elixirs, they cost loads more than normal strings, but had a guy comment on loving the sound of new strings playing my guitar, strings are 8 months old.

Thanks for the heads-up, Jake.  Sorry you had to take one for the team.

The one set of Elixirs I tried, I liked a lot.  They really did stay fresh for quite a bit longer.

It's amazing to me that some of you can have strings for so long.  I've known this for awhile, but my sweat is just the death of strings (and nickle hardware come to find out).  I wipe them thoroughly after playing, but within 5 hours of playing there's black shit where my hands rest a lot.  I'm also surprised at the lack of brand loyalty for strings.  Maybe they don't sound all that different when you first put them on, but they feel different and tend to have different lifetimes.  Nothing makes me happy like a fresh set of GHS boomers on my strat.

Not sure about the cost comparison but I go through juststrings.com because of this-

I get the 48 and 62 to combine with 4 from a set of 13s. I'd prefer slightly thinner strings but I hate fret buzz.

ok hate GC all you want, but black Friday it's on.  12 sets of martin strings for $25. those are quicky cash items, just buy them, no curriculum vitae needed.

You could raise your action a bit and use a lighter string.
