In one session I play guitars and basses tuned to C# standard, E standard, and D# standard.  I have a polytune which is horrible and needs to be replaced.  Which tuner should I get?  I am thinking the Boss Tu-3 since it is a tried and true design, but am considering the Turbo Tuner.

the polytune is way too hyped in my opinion:

1) the polytune function does not work at all for me.  completely innacurate no matter what tuning.  Settings for it do not allow for C# standard tuning.  total junk.  I wonder what the gibson robot tuning is like and if it mirrors this.

2) the polytune function comes on when I am trying to single tune and does not go away and keeps popping up which is very annoying

3) in single tuning mode, strings are played but do not even register, so I have to tune by ear etc.

Jake

Well that's certainly no bueno. I've had a diff't experience since I got mine last month. Single note function works as it should. I don't even mess with the multi-string, as I don't tune to anything near a standard.

Only got it because my Korg DT-10 was taking up too much room on my (teeny tiny) pedal board. I had the Korg for many, many years and was quite happy with it. That thing even worked all the way down to a drop G, Bongripper style tuning.

Korg's are the way to go, then can go to 432hz too, a lot of tuners will not.

I see the Boss TU-3 has been updated to be more accurate (+/- 1 cent) -- in the past it was +/- 3 cents, kind of crappy.

well, accuracy is important when downtuning

musicians like to be in tune, even punk rockers!  maybe not if they are noiscore though  ???

I've walked out on bands because they/someone were/was so out of tune. I just can't deal with it. TUNE. After every other song if you have to.

I use a Peterson Strobostomp 2. I like it. No idea if it can do chords, wouldn't even try if it could.

Still rocking the Boss TU-2

Haven't messed with it enough to see about re-calibrating for 432, but using a diff tuner then seeing where it is on the Boss, 432 is the second to last dot on the left. Right by the screw. So I put silver sharpie on the screw head to mark it. #punk

In the studio, usually the Peterson strobe. Conn strobes are okay, too.

On the pedalboard, I still use an old TU-2, but if it broke or got stolen, I'd probably go with the Korg Pitchblack.

Playing alone, a Snark clip-on for general reference > my ears for the fine-tuning.

I have a Korg Pitchblack that handles my standard C tuning for bass just fine.

Totally.

And I take the TU-2 from my bass pedalboard and use it as a poor man's ABY box to split signal for the Loop pedal for Ocean of Stars.

TU-2 as a splitter is the only way to go.

I learned that trick from Dug Pinnick when I was teching for Kings X

And I didn't come up with the quote. It's from a meme with a modern-day pic of Henry Rollins and Ian MacKaye, heh

Really?  Over something like a Radial aby?

Danny G

Yup. Because I can't afford to buy one and I only need an ABY for one project.

Whereas I already have two TU-2's

At the end of of the day if I do need an ABY, I'll just build one.

If you build one look into a design with an iso transformer and ground lift/phase.

That's the one I have.  I got it for $40 used.  Why bother building one?

Danny G

Damn. That is cheap.

I do have two tiny transformers already on a board with some other parts as I was in the process of beginning an ABY build for a friend which fell thru.

Well shit, half the work is sourcing the parts.  If you already have the parts then go ahead.  then you could paint it up like a booty que pedal.

You should do a negative print of your likeness like mutant and stamp er'thing with it.  Stencil your cabs, etc.
