What is the effect(s) that are being used to make the vocals sound muffled and blown out?

Naxzul

Sounds like it's being run through distortion but I might be wrong

It's probably a piece of rack gear since they did it in the studio (duh) but I've heard people say that a Rat can be good on vocals, or a DOD/Digitech Death Metal. Give it a try on some already recorded vocals (buss or bump, you know what I mean.) That way it's non-destructive to the original track, and you can experiment freely.

Thanks guys

I'm thinking about picking up one of these

I have two of these stomp boxes now and I dig them. My pedal situation is starting to get a bit out of hand right now so I may have to switch to a vocal processor at some point just to make my life a bit easier.

Which other units do you have?

Those are probably soundguy-friendly.

The vocals are distorted, echoed, reverbed, compressed, processed?  Tough to really tell by ear what they used.

I'm a big fan of RAT pedals for vocals, and I also think overloading a Deluxe Memory Man's input also sounds cool.
The fact that I kept setting my own boats on fire was considered charming.
