Title: Hot Deals
Post by: Lumpy on February 04, 2011, 04:29:39 AM
I figured we could use a thread for Ebay and Craigs List finds (plus other sources). Seen a great deal, and don't need it or can't afford it? Please share it here (no spam please).

(All links have a limited lifespan)

Today's Musician's Friend "Stupid Deal of the Day" (heads up: 24 hour limit, and often sells out) is a Bugera 100 watt tube guitar amp for 319 dollars (shipping free).
I think Bugera is made by Behringer (?) and I cannot vouch for quality, but that seems like a great deal:

Fender Starcaster Chorus is $7.99 at BestBuy. Ship it to a store for free pick up, or shipping to your home for like 1.25. My total with shipping and sales tax was $10.06

Music Man HD150 amp (has the solid state preamp -- who cares, you're using a fuzz pedal anyway, right?): 350 dollars plus shipping (north carolina)

Would be a beastly guitar amp, or a good mid-sized bass amp IMO

I just picked up a Fender Bassman cab yesterday that looks like this one^^^. I was wondering what year it was. This ad says late 60s and i was curious how long the cabs looked this way. I had figured early 70's maybe. Sorry this is the wrong thread to ask this but any info would be cool. I got it for $300 loaded with new-out-of-the-box EV SRO 15's and the cab is FLAWLESS! Not one single mark on the tolex, its like it was just bought from a store!

Sorry again..wrong thread to ask.

Fender made amp heads and cabs with that silver trim around the grill cloth during 1968 and 1969. The trim is called drip edge because its actually IS the aluminum trim used to prevent water from dripping into screen doors and other areas. 68 amp heads tend to say "Bassman AMP" as opposed to just "bassman" and may have vertical black lines on the faceplate. The drip edge amps are an exceptional value as they dont command blackface prices, yet have the same circuits and components used in the blackface amps. I own a drip edge showman and vibrochamp

That bastard!! Yeah the drip edge gets lost alot of times when people change the grill cloth. Its easy to order the straight edges of the aluminum drip edge but the corners need to be fabricated with a pair of tin-snips so its too much of an asspain to replicate.

It aint for sale. I just bought it saturday.  MINE MINE MINE.

Its E9th but you can tune it however you want. Unlike modern steels, fender cable steel are easy to change tuning/copedant.

I thought we were posting 'hot deals' so i posted  a "hot deal"  I actually scored.
If I had posted it BEFORE i scored it, someone else may have scored it first.

you can get a modern steel for about $1000 if you are patient. You dont want one of these old ones to start on.

this one is an extremely rare model (ten strings sibngle neck cable steel)and they go for a bout $1200 if you can find em at all. There juts werent many made. i see one a year on ebay.
This one was plucked from Craigs List locally.

Title: Re: Hot Deals
Post by: Chovie D on March 29, 2011, 01:49:16 PM
Honestly, i was in the same boat as you. Wanted one really badly, couldnt justify the expense. When my pops died, i took $700 from my "inheritance" and bought a brand new Carter Starter fropm musicans friend. The guitar broke within a week so i sent it back. BY then i had found a teacher and he found me a replacement steel for $900, a pro model I still use today, everyday.

Its a leap of faith to spend that much money on an instrument you dont know if you'll be able to play or not. so glad, I made that leap tho. changed my life for the better.

If you ever get to the point where you want to take the plunge, and have about $1200 to invest, lemme know, I'll help you find a decent steel.

I was in Elderly 15 years ago buying my first Big Muff.  A lot of the guys in there were cunts.  Some middle-aged dude was on my ass pretty quick trying to sell me the "hot new" Dano FX Fab Dist, the big one, made of metal.  I start playing and he says something like "whoa, outta tune".  I was tuning down to C pentatonic at the time.  I told him, that I wasn't a blues lawyer and E was for sissies.  Anyway, I walked out of there with the Green Muff for $60.  They had some Prescription pedals at the time and maybe a few others.  But they were very overpriced and didn't give a shit unless you looked like $$$.

Absolutely safe. If you look at the dude's log-in name, underneath it says the number of TalkBass deals he has (32) and his percentage of successful deals (100%). TalkBass has all his contact info and they provide some accountability, too. They do hundreds of deals there every day - I don't remember anybody ever complaining that they got ripped off.

You have to be a member of TalkBass in order to PM the guy. It only takes a minute to sign up. You can't list your own ads without paying for a membership though - I think it's 20 bucks, but that's not what you want to do. You just wanna send him a PM, tell him you're interested, ask any questions, and then get his Paypal info.

It's a great place to buy gear IMO, people flip gear there like crazy. Some people want to sell their stuff for too much money, but not always ;)

Thanks for the info, Lumpy. It's good to have alternatives.

It's a great price for a G-400.
It's hard for me to hold back when the deal is that good, but I really shouldn't spend anymore this year, and I think my next SG should be a Gibson.

EDIT: Just remembered the Goths are cheaper (owing to the finish, apparently). Still not a bad deal, though.

Sweet! Is that a laminated top on that or a two-tone lacquer job, Neutron?

Post by: Mr Neutron on June 15, 2011, 05:15:24 PM
It appears to be a 2 tone lacquer, as there is some bleed over around the neck pocket.

light, sounds fantastic, plays well. Buying that made me a fan of Korina guitars (even cheap multi-piece ones)

Definitely a unique look. Wood grain & butterscotch.

Korina is a great tone wood, agreed. The Korina V's and Explorers rule.

That sure is purty! Any notable upgrades?

Gold hardware really looks it's best when paired with korina with those finishes, IMO. It really pops on there.

Yeah, tone pros T.O.M.

duncan '59 in the neck, Duncan Pearly Gates neck pickup at the bridge.

This sticker sits on the lower left of the body, dramatically increasing sustain.

scratch and sniff pig shaped sticker that says "ham" between the pickups (tone for days, dude)

Eventually, id like to replace the tuners with wafflebacks. probably swap out the pots too. but currently there's no money for such shenanigans.

Plus, ive got my eye on one of those Epi Korina Firebirds.

Spotted this on philly craigslist today...I don't know much about this specific model, but I can't imagine $450 is a bad deal for a Sunn Head with ze toobz (assuming it powers up and makes sound). Dude thinks it's from the 80's but as best as I can tell, he's probably off by about 15-20 years. Wish I had the cash to throw down myself cause I'm jonesing hard for a 50 watt head right now.

It's kind of an old deal, but I just sold a pair of speakers that I took out of a nice old 2x12 that I purchased along with an acoustic 140 head. I paid $350 for the lot, and sold just the speakers for $700. They were rare Fanes that some hiwatt or vox guy might die for. I think I might have gotten more for the speaks, but a dude made a nice offer and I figured, why be greedy? It worked out well.

Music-go-round!  last weekend they had a carbon copy for 70, I was on the fence so I layed off.  Tonight I'm looking around and see what they are really going for-used 90 on CL new 150.  So I head over since my mind was make up and no luck sold the fucker.  I picked up an MXR double shot dist for 70.  I needed a cool distortion pedal anyway.

edit-not bad!  2 channels, channel one is MXR distortion all the way.  channel two is heavy fuzz and a bit unruly at that.  nice tone controls and plenty of volume boost.  can't wait to let the volume loose.

When I bought this it came down between this and the Fryette Pittbull Ultra Lead.  The Fryette definitely has more gain but it's a smoother, more highly compressed high gain.  The Elmwood finally came in the mail today but I was able to play it for awhile.  There are two channels, a clean and lead.  Each channel has a boost and I was really happy that I could get Matamp-ish tones from the clean channel with the volume and boost up or I can tighten it up like cranked Plexi.  It doesn't have the unusual midrange and while the lows are big and deep they're just different from a Mat but it can get in the ballpark.  The high gain isn't the hyper compressed Mesa sort of sound but it does roar.  I can still keep the lows nice and tight for palm mutes but it doesn't thin out or sound artificially muddy when I stop palm muting like many high gain amps.  I also really like the cleans.  They can keep fairly clean at really high volume and I can get even cleaner by backing off the guitar's volume.  Adding the boost on the lead channel can get a bit messy for rhythm but it can really sing with big harmonics for leads.  I didn't get to try any pedals out with it...hopefully it can take fuzz pedals well.  I'm planning on using this for another project...nothing is replacing my Matamp/Electric setup for my main band but so far I think I've found a keeper.

Racer, that thing looks like it's....what do the hip kids say..."on point". Nice grab !

Hems, yah 270. My duh, I didn't see the other knobs. Some ACC aficionados prefer the 270 to the 370 but 100 clams is indeed a Hot Deal either way

Thanks, Dave.

The neck feels perfect in my hand. Frets are good. Just a few tiny dings—the finish on my 21st century SG is already more fucked up. This thing has tone & sustain for days.

Downside:  I think the bridge p/u is borderline microphonic.

The case and guitar smell like some Japanese dude burned through a few packs a day in a tiny room for 30 years. It looks like he did a lot more smoking than playing, tho.

Minor pitting on the TOM bridge, and that's about it!

Taking her in next week for a cleaning/tuneup/setup to D standard. For now, I'm having some fun playing some standard tuning stuff: ZZ, Montrose, Priest, & such.

Alan, If you want to save that pickup, the process is really easy. Holler if you want me to tell ya how.

In other news, I snagged a early 2000's Mexican Strat for 42.97 at a pawn shop. black/white, gonna change out the pickguard to white, and put some different pickups in it, replace the bridge, and it'll be hot titty.

Picked up a Tele body and neck for $220 a little while back. Put it together with extra p/ups and hardware I had laying around. Just need to buy a switch and wire it up.

It's a limited edition finish called Copperburst. They were factory-routed to fit a humbucker in the neck, so I Dremmeled out the pickguard and oblidged.

Music Man HD130 head, should be loud enough to drive away the locusts. 400 dollars includes shipping. (not my amp).

Has solid state pre-amp, but owner says it gets warm vintage overdrive. Seller is a bass player but this would probably kill as a guitar amp (it can be used as either) --- as a blank slate for your fuzz pedals, or loud & clean. 130 tube watts!

Guy selling it has 95 transactions with 100% success rate, I'd say he's a good risk:

Yeah, I probably would. But I like the Mig-30. Such a good little amp, though I have to say not as good as my baby Andromeda. 18 watts of pure kick in the gentleman's vegetables.

Although this thing would just be an epic effects platform.

There's also an Ampeg Isovent cab on NY Craigslist for like 350 or 375. Two 15 inch speakers and two 10 inch speakers (the 15's are coupled together and one is phased in reverse... like a PushmePullyou?) Rock the same cab that Danny G of the Mothertruckers uses. Somewhat rare cab.

not really sure you can call this a hot deal as its pickup only (Puget Sound/Seattle area)...

I'd personally jump on it but don't need a combo setup right now. I think he wanted 6 bills the other day, so he may deal some....

Title: Re: Hot Deals
Post by: At_Giza on October 22, 2011, 10:07:02 PM
All of them sound a bit different.

My proto baby Andromeda doesn't sound the same as the second one he made. It does sound similar to it, but it's not exactly the same.

Their big brothers are the same way, they're all put together similarly, but some of them sound different. My buddy's got the first Andromeda made, and it's 100 watts and it's got an incredible gain capabilities along with the ability to be very versatile. I comparing the second one to it we found it sounded slightly different, of course it put out a bit less watts, but then again that doesn't mean much. They can all do pretty much the same thing, but it seems they go about it in different ways, which means that they can also do others things differently than each other. If that makes sense....  :-\

I dunno how they all sound different, I've never had a long conversation with Nial about how he builds and engineers the amps.  :P
Title: Re: Hot Deals
Post by: Hemisaurus on October 22, 2011, 10:11:04 PM
So I'm imagining he keeps transformer sets, and builds the same basic preamp for each one? Some might have more power than others, depending on how conservatively the manufacturers rate their amp.

It's a great idea, the next step, if he runs out of donor amps, would be to have the customer supply the donor, and charge a rebuild fee.
Title: Re: Hot Deals
Post by: At_Giza on October 22, 2011, 10:14:09 PM
Yeah, that or do the whole cheap amp rebuild.

My baby Andromeda started out as a Jet City 20... Now it doesn't sound like a Jet City 20. It was just a bit more expensive than a Jet City 20 cost new. Which was cool, 'cause I think it's a far better amp now.

LINK PULLED
Univox 1236 Tube amp. Japanese. Early 70's. 50 watt. 2 6l6 power tubes, 3 preamp tubes. 200. comes with a receipt from dean zink with alot of work done.

Dean Zink is a prick btw, he does good work.  But he's a line-stepper.

EDIT: Thanks B.E.!

I found a 1968 fender showman head on CL for $100. when I got there and saw it, i tried to play it cool, but the guy must have sensed something cause he said "gee, you really like these old things eh?".

to some people these are just old heavy doorstops and nothing more.
I just said "yes sir i really do!", paid and thanked him and drove a couple blocks away, got out of my car went to the trunk and just looked at that thing giggling with joy for 5 solid minutes before driving the hour back home.

For that price, I'd be weary that it's a lemon.

I know the seller, so it's on the up n up (whatever that means).

The Moon would be replacing a Phase 90 on my board.

Hello Music has the EQD Rainbow Machine today for $169 + $10 shipping (-$20 if you're a first-time customer, so $159 for me.)  I jumped on one for reasons I can't really justify other than "I hope I'll use it" and "I love EQD."

If memory serves you have to be a 'member' to buy, where membership entails being spammed twice a day with updates and so forth. But in case someone is in the market.

That's very true Lumpy, there are a lot of people who point to ebay listings as indicators of worth and I've seen the same insanely overpriced listings stay up for over a year, no one's buying them. I've seen a Sunn stack up on ebay a dozen times for at least quadruple what it's realistically worth. I've seen an aluminum neck Kramer that keeps getting listed over and over for over $2000, I sold mine for I think $500 and felt good about it. On the other hand, I've had people offer me $400 for my Sound City and you couldn't by a new tube amp half as loud, good sounding or reliable for that price these days. I've found great deals, seen stuff that until recently was low price listed for insane amounts, sold good gear dirt cheap to make space, made money flipping gear and been low balled on really choice pieces. It's all over the place.

I would take you up on that Nick, but I don't have social medias. Do you have any ravens or carrier pigeons you can have carry the word out for me?

What you mean like the Ampeg, that thing is a horrible design, with multiple PCB's and PCB mounted tube sockets, yet people love 'em.

Sunn, that particular model, haven't seen in the flesh yet, what is interesting about it is, if you look back at Nick's spreadsheet, you can't get 300W iron for less than about $300-400 the pair, and that's the cheap stuff (Weber for instance), another $200 for the cheap, cheap tubes, y'know Russian power and Chinese pre. A chassis is another $100. A head case is another $100. So even if you did a Hovercraft and stripped it, you've still come out a winner (if you wanted a 300W amp). Mercury charge $400 just for a PT or OT :o

i never dissed the amp, merely explained that modding such things is difficult and often fruitless. If you wanna gut the amp down and just use the iron thats not an awful idea for much work to be done.

Despite Ampegs poor PCB design they had awesome iron.

Dunno if this is a deal, in the sense it seems rather weird. The Bugera BVV-3000, their Ampeg SVT clone, $578 (usually at least $700) brand new, with free shipping.

If you don't buy from an authorized dealer, the manufacturer won't honor the warranty. I guess that won't matter anymore, once you start tearing it apart...

Not even if you send in the registration card? I've never had to get a repair, but their tech support has always been good with questions, or at least Behringer was.
Title: Re: Hot Deals
Post by: Lumpy on May 11, 2012, 09:29:00 PM
It depends on if it's an authorized dealer. Behringer may do things differently, but many manufacturers will not honor a warranty on something that was purchased outside the licensed network.

Chicken/egg scenario? If you try to price match with a company that boasts they will beat anybody's price (at Musicians Friend for example), they will not match prices from sellers like "hotdealzz.com" etc because they are not licensed, and don't have the same financial stake in the product if it fails.

I still have and use my behringer 1x10 combo amp that I got in 2002. Sansamp preamp, ~30 watt, and a 10" jensen.

I doesn't always work "well" but still gets used all the time indoors.

By tune-up, he means a recap, and a good cleaning of the pots, and removal of that dodgy suicide cap on the xfmr primary ;)

Just FYI:

I'd go for it myself, not a bad deal (to me) ;)

It's not going to be a big loud sludgey bass amp, but could kill for guitar.

Rehousing is easy, true bypass is trickier, same as with any buffered pedal, you have to be able to make sure the circuit is jammed on, so you can bypass it, that involves circuit mods.

If you just want to rehouse it, you can replace the switch with a momentary footswitch like this one.

Don't forget the circuits they are cloning weren't true bypass to begin with. The general consensus for people wanting to convert Boss, DOD, Behringer, Danelectro, Arion etc. pedals to true bypass is just to make a loopbox around the pedal, and leave it switched on, see Spook's home made Looper as an example.

The Behringer boxes are the most cheapest, crummiest boxes imaginable. Okay for home use. Rehousing would be a must, for real use (unless maybe 'always on'... the stomp mechanism is crummy too). Even then, a backup would be good.

Best use for these would be "I wonder if I would like a _____ pedal" (flanger, phaser, etc) then it's a low-stakes way to try different effects, before moving up to something more sturdy.
Title: Re: Hot Deals
Post by: bitter on May 20, 2012, 07:19:51 PM
yep, they're more for funsies and experimentation.

We should by the lot and make a community pedal library. Let Hemi or Sunn 0))) keep them and send them out to guys. they're so cheap that a $25-30 deposit would cover shipping or any breakdowns.

just a thought.

That's actually bullshit. Mine has been thrown in my gig bag, stuffed down the back of the seat and dragged round the country, I wear steel-toe boots, oftentimes I miss with the sole, and hit with the heel, it's still ticking.

It's plastic so it might be flimsier, but it ain't necessarily so.

Months worth? ;)

Don't get me wrong, I've bought a couple of these Behringer cheapies, and I recognize their usefulness. But 30 years from now, your Boss pedal will still be working. That's the difference. Behringer makes some good products, but they are generally dogshit as a company, IMO. Example: I bought a rack crossover from them. It arrived DOA, in the factory box. It never turned on. I have never had that happen with any other product, in any category (not just music gear). It never worked at all.

If you lurk on other gear forums as I do, you will see periodically complaints about Behringer products crapping out. But you don't hear that about products from other companies, at least not in the same numbers.

Err, Crate, Ampeg, Mackie, Peavey, Fender, Marshall? All been on the bench, along with the Bugera.

Everything wears out, most everything is now made in the Orient (which is the ultimate horror for an American musician). I think by far the worst shit is the STL music stuff, Crates and Ampegs from the 80's - 00's, they are crappy as fuck, I've seen a couple of exceptions, but the fact I saw them means they were broke anyways.

How can you tell your Behringer won't be around in 30 years, they haven't been around long enough yet? The FX unit I bought from them in the late 90's, still going strong, the mixer, ditto. Power Amps installed in clubs, by friends of mine, still working after years of bass abuse. I worked on a Behringer parametric EQ, that had been submerged in the trunk of a flooded car for a week, before it got towed back to dry land, nothing wrong with it, pots were still fine, switches OK, some surface rust that came off with wire wool, and we replaced the jacks just in case.

If you are playing 100 gigs a year, then a plastic stomp may break quicker, are you playing 100 gigs a year? Be realistic about the amount of abuse your gear goes through. I've got some DOD stomps here, in nice metal boxes, with nice metal jacks, and they are buggered anyways.

Note the DOD on the right, where the switch crapped out and was replaced, this is my buddy's pedalboard ;)

I never hard used my behringer acoustic modeler but it sure is flimsy. In my limited usage with it I don't really turn it on by foot. the latch pedal does flex a lot and kind of cracks/pops when pressing down. I think the switch is just hard to access pressure-wise by hand and the latch is flexing side to side. I wouldn't play live with one but that's just me.

Behringer quality control is lacking and their products are kinda hit and miss. you get what you pay for so treat it well and it will survive.

Did you seat the spring pin thing properly after you put in the battery? I find it makes a little noise (physical not electrical) until it seats right, usually after a couple of presses. That there is a silly design though, needing something pointy to change the battery.

Post by: bitter on May 20, 2012, 09:21:27 PM
I'm not terribly sure, but that could be it. I've had it for at least 4 years and prolly have maybe 1-2 hours of play time thru it  :-\
Title: Re: Hot Deals
Post by: Hemisaurus on May 20, 2012, 09:25:21 PM
Yeah, you have to make sure the spring pin is seated properly on each side. Should be flush.

I like those VHT special 6 amps.  Haven't played one, but reviews are good.

Looks pretty mod friendly, too:

It doesn't have headphone out, though, if you're looking for that.
Title: Re: Hot Deals
Post by: Hemisaurus on May 22, 2012, 01:38:18 PM
Headphone out would be an easy jigger on a 6W amp, you could either make a little external box, or fit to the amp, there looks like there is space. You'd just need a small load resistor, 8 1W 1Ohm wired in series would work, if you couldn't get your hands on a power resistor, basically you just need a (close to) 8 ohm load @ 6W or more, or whatever that amps output is (4,8, 16?) and a pot across that of a high value 100K-1M, and hook the headphone jack to the wiper of the pot.

Eyelet board on a chinese amp?

Mindblow.

I'll buy one.
Title: Re: Hot Deals
Post by: dunwichamps on May 22, 2012, 02:24:06 PM
you need to attenuate the signal down to be less than 1W into the headphones, or you risk blowing the drivers out. You also need to factor your headphone impedance into the equation to determine Pout and desired resistive divider. When the headphone output is max it should not exceed 1W into the phones, preferably less than that unless u like being deaf.

The resistive load should be 2 x max power output to avoid problems of derating when resistor is heated up at max power. something like 10W is probably a better idea.
Title: Re: Hot Deals
Post by: Hemisaurus on May 22, 2012, 03:06:25 PM
True. At max, assuming the standard 32ohm headphone, there will be about 1.25W available, perhaps safer to use two resistors in series, and connect the pot across only one of them. Or you could not turn the pot up full to start with ;)
Title: Re: Hot Deals

considering people do boneheaded shit id design for it to be under a watt.
Title: Re: Hot Deals
Post by: moose23 on May 22, 2012, 04:15:48 PM
You can run the VHT in half power but I'm not sure if that's actually going to be 3 Watts or a bit more but still lower starting point than 6 Watts for designing your headphone out.
Title: Re: Hot Deals
Post by: RacerX on May 22, 2012, 07:11:55 PM
See if you can find a schematic for the Blackstar HT5. It's about the same wattage, & it's got an emulated speaker headphone line out. You can even choose between 2x12 or 4x12, but the 4x12 setting sounds so much better that they could've left the 2x12 option out.

Actually on consideration $2.69 isn't a bad deal atall, and if you push more than 20W through it, it will be a hot deal. 4 of these would be a nice 50W loadbox for $11

They'll definitely dissipate better, and are way better for big loads. I haven't seen them in use as much over here as in the UK, wonder if they are UK made? I'd imagine some US company makes them too surely.

I think the price difference is because it's solid state, not tube, and it's only half working  ;D

Carpentering is half the battle, soldering is easy, woodworking is hard ;)

Well, that and metalworking.

Wooly Mammoth clone here for 80 dollars (shipped). Good chainsaw bass fuzz, a little squelchy (gated) and too modern for my tastes (I like more retro 60's-70s sound). NOT MY PEDAL (duh). I would rate the real Wooly Mammoth as a top bass fuzz, here's a budget version.

I concur about the old Traynors. I've had a '71 Yba-1 and a Yba-1a from about the same era. The -1 sounded better I think, especially channel jumped, While the -1a was definitely louder. Only drawback was that they were 8 ohm heads. I never bothered to look and see if the Xfmr had other taps.

Those Traynors are specified as 8 ohm, but they have pretty massive transformers. I've run my '70 YBA-1 at 4 ohm consistently for a long time with no issues at all. Although I did install a cooling fan. Same with the YBA-3, which one of the guitarists in Cold Mourning uses at 4 ohm on a regular basis. They got smart and put a cooling fan in at the factory with that amp. I can't speak to any other Traynor models, but that's direct long term experience on my part with those two.

Yeah my -1a had a factory fan.  I horse traded it to Lippy in part for his Les Paul.  Last I knew he was still happy with it and was looking for another.  Playing bass through it, he wanted two to run at once.

VINTAGE 1970'S TRAYNOR 2X15 GUITAR/BASS CABINET - $250 (Welland)   It is CLEAN!!!!

http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/tor/msg/3146256627.html (http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/tor/msg/3146256627.html)

I think I'd sell mine for that. The stock speakers are typically Marslands, and not impressive at all. Heh, a few months ago I cleaned the garage out and put those dead 15's at the street saying what they were and that they were free, and they went. A few days ago I saw them down the street at the curb again.

If y'all see shit like that, and you know it's something tight that money can be made on, holler at me right quick, and I can probably make it happen. I'm all about buyin' and flipping shit like that, after a little bit of clean-up and playin'. Ethics got no place in my life when I'm in debt. I've returned many-a-good-deal, and sold some shit for real low prices because of how good doing shit like this has been to me. When it gets down to business time, and I have to get myself out of the hole, I'm no holds barred, though.

Plus 15% off anything over 199 (guitar is .99 cents over) so take another 28 dollars off (my math sucks) before 9/27, if you say "Paul15" when ordering. So only like 170 bucks.

Hard to see in those pics, but the Fender brand are spelled Squier. (Not Squire). Also, Fenders/Squiers will always have a bolt-on neck, and not look like Les Pauls.

Nothing wrong with a 100 dollar Squire "Less Paul" though, if it plays fine and you need a guitar.
Title: Re: Hot Deals
Post by: justJon on November 05, 2012, 09:40:44 PM
Yeah, I've seen a couple of these, locally. I think the spelling on the headstock is "Squier" Illiterate seller notwithstanding. The others I've seen have been $250 and up. I believe i read somewhere that these are Japanese Squiers, but never really took off. I don't know what I did with the link...

Oh, this is from when Fender took over DeArmond. They rebranded all the Dearmond models, like that Squier s-73 (rebranding the DeArmond/Guild that Kim Thayil plays). I remember that, they only tried it for like a year (they basically folded Dearmond)

There's a peavey 4x12 + supreme 160 head going for $300 in my area. Want the cab more than anything. Is it worth it? Is the head any good for stoner or should I just try to get the cab?
Title: Re: Hot Deals
Post by: Lumpy on November 07, 2012, 09:18:52 PM
Find out what model the cab is...

Some of the older Peavey cabs have Celestion speakers in them (G12-85K I think that is the correct label). I have a Peavey with those speakers (MS412, but some of those came with other speakers). They are kinda scooped and dark sounding (not muddy but scooped). They handle 85 watts each (per speaker), so pretty indestructible. I paid about 120-150 for the cab. I don't know anything about the head. The cabinets are brick shithouses though, they are built very solid.

I personally like more mids in a guitar cab. Scooped is too modern sounding.

Cool deal on the bay for this Marshall type Garnet Deputy.

Garnet basically made clone ish amps so like the BTO and Pro models were orange-y and the Deputy was Marshallish. The Session Man was Fender bassman like.

$500 plus shipping gets you some good sound for sure, though be advised this model is only slightly sought after.
We love Garnets here in the Watch Husky Burn fold, as most of you know.

If they dropped the cab and the price proportionately, it would be a hot deal. Still not a bad one, but not many people want that cab with the head. Let alone the $100+ shipping charge that goes with it.

Title: Re: Hot Deals
Post by: Lumpy on February 25, 2013, 05:30:35 PM
There's nothing wrong with that cab, I'd say it's worth 130-150 bucks. More if there are good speakers inside... might have Celestions in it.

150 cab
250 head

400 bro price (total) or
475 Ebay price

I'd say it's a square deal.
Title: Re: Hot Deals
Post by: Corey Y on February 25, 2013, 06:06:54 PM
Oh, it's still a good deal. It's just if it was a $250 BIN for the head alone, it would be a great deal. I have noticed there are a lot of old Peavey listings on ebay where they bundle the cab and the head. For good reason, it's pretty hard to sell those types of cabs and get any reasonable amount of cash. So it's kind of like you get a good deal and a cab you don't need or you get a good deal and now it's on you to try to sell that cab and make enough profit to cover the cost and the shipping and make the head a great deal.

Still a good deal though, if someone has that much to spend and needs a 412 cab. That's a solid rig.

Zvex Machine on Ebay for $155 plus shipping, seller keeps dropping the price 5 dollars every time it doesn't sell (it should go soon, now it's below half the price of a brand new one). The newer versions have a 9 volt input and an LED (the old ones need a battery, or file a hole in the casing). These are pretty rad, and they rarely came up used before (would be more in the low 200s used). They are low power consumption so a battery lasts a long time (if you pull the cables out between use) but not having an LED is dumb. "You'll know when it's on!" uh okay Zach...

Called Paypal, and since payment hasn't cleared, they are gonna recall that, and we'll see if they can recall the shipped item or not.

Used HBE "UFO" Fuzz (Ultimate Fuzz Octave) for 99 bucks shipped, like new. (Good deal, they are typically $120, used). I'm supposed to be downsizing, otherwise I would buy this myself.

This is the octave fuzz (octave up) that lets you blend in the most high octave tone into your mix (some other octave fuzz have a really weak octave effect). The octave volume has it's own knob. The octave is also on a separate switch ("8VA") so you can flick it off completely for rhythm parts. Also, the basic fuzz sound has two styles (toggle switch): vintage or modern. Check it out via Youtube demos etc. Get your Hendrixy solos on. Hendrixy solos are the thing that's missing from today's Stoner Rock. Srsly.

Yeah, a couple years ago I decided that gear that wasn't re-sellable wasn't on my hot list anymore. I look at craigslist and the auction place and don't see anybody that wants to truly unload their gear. Anything that I sold was pretty good stuff, and desirable to some, but it went at what I would consider bottom dollar.

It'd be interesting to experiment with a Les Paul or something that's a blue chip to buy one on c-list, then flip it on ebay for no reserve, to see where it would trade. Right now, I don't see anything on the bay without a reserve, or a starting bid that is right there at the trading line (for a les paul anyway). I'd like to try this with someone else's money.

Not sure if there are any real deals, but this stuff has been involved in some pretty monumental recordings from the 80's up until now. There's a Hammond B3 with Leslie in there! I'm sure that's not cheap.

I don't know what I'm talking about, but I assume there's a reason no one builds their enclosures like that.  I'm sure their marketing team could dream up a way to say it improves some damn thing or the other, but my inclination is that it's gimmicky and probably has phasing issues.

Yah, those speaks look like any ol' Replacementeristica's; mold and Gorilla glue repair no extra charge! It's worth $200 in my mind. That configuration is from the "red" era (2nd Generation I think?) of Sunn, they also made a 6x12 w/ the same baffling baffle (and maybe others).

800 is the "I hope I hook a Sunnaddict, we'll be eatin' good tonight maw!" price
Title: Re: Hot Deals
Post by: Jake on August 24, 2014, 09:16:01 PM
Call me cynical, but I think that Fender could make a killing by reviving that brand and putting out some solid amps, like the reissues were. Think what you will about them, but they were built quite robustly. The market for Sunn stuff is much more receptive than it was at the time of the reissues.

Hell, it'd be easy for them to just deliver what die hard Sunn enthusiasts really want—big, loud, overpowered tube amps. No need to dump much money into R&D at all.

Title: Re: Hot Deals
Post by: eyeprod on August 25, 2014, 10:06:22 PM
yeah it lacks a bit of girth compared to my v4, but I love it as it is. My guitarist doesn't like it so much when I'm in his zone like that, but there's a lot of cool "crossover" of frequencies that I think sound really great if we both maintain a controllable volume. Too loud and it turns to a wall of harsh midrange. I'm into mastering precise volume and eq levels lately; exploring subtleties of tone within a range of frequency. I think it's the 12's that are really doing it for me lately, but the sunn is the heart of it.

rack effects. this boils down to a flat out steal. Lexicon MPX 400 is a dual mpx 200 if you will. they sell for $299, which already is pretty nice for 2 effects units worth.
BUT if you buy one from now to end of year, you can send in for $75 rebate. now you just bought 2 lexicons in one box for basically $112 each.
you cant even touch this used. I am really REALLY glad those 2 used ones were fucked up and I returned them so I can use that money for this and actually come out $100 to the good for the same effects capability.

btw, if y'all want, I can make a demo of the sound of the older MX500 which is about the same. it is super quiet and clean and the adjustments are basically infinite.
like how many reverb units can you tweak the cutoff freq?  that is half the character of a room, how bright or dull it is, not just reverb time.

also, it is good to have several reverbs. vocals get one level of verb and maybe a touch of chorus and a guitar may get the psycho delay and long reverb. you cant set this up very easily unless you have a pile of effects on a mixer.   the aux out/ins are your dry/wet mixers now and you just dial up whatever effects you want per channel. fucking slick as a mutherfucker.

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MX400TRS
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MX400TRS (http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MX400TRS)

edit: i'm almost more excited by the 4 channel surround possibilities this thing possesses when you link up all 4 effect processors. take psychedelia to the next level when you can 360 ping pong and other mind raping sounds.

Ebay has a bunch of $65 Akai Headrush 2 (delay/looper pedal which is pretty damn cool IMO). Some listings are "or best offer" so maybe you can get it for even less. Just look it up on Ebay, there are multiple listings. Blowout price, the cheapest I've seen them before was $99 (and they're usually like 130). 23 seconds of loop time. Soft-touch switches.  Multiple outputs for multiple record heads, etc (for you guys with 4 amps) ;)

Note- I don't think you can use it as a delay and a looper at the same time - you gotta pick one or the other.

Yeah, for $65 I had to impulse buy. These are rad. I wanted something cool to put in front of my MicroBrute and this will do nicely instead of spending all that money on a SpaceEcho.

Currently contemplating a 12+ hour drive to pick up this drumset from Connecticut, and 12+ hours back. It's a Ludwig Rocker set, maple shells which I want for that warm deep sound, and 24x28 kick drums! That's a long ass drive though.

Yup. My first 'bird was every bit as good as the actual Gibson non-reverse that replaced it. And since the Stormbird is discontinued, and now only $300, I couldn't say no.

This dude has a used Pharaoh for $115, and a used Digitech Whammy 4 for $65 (which includes shipping and AC transformer) so that's bro pricing (those whammys are heavy, so shipping is prolly $15)

re: the pharaoh. for a couple bucks more, if you buy it from BAT new, you benefit from the lifetime warranty.

Speaking of BAT,I have to ask mark if he looks for worthy retailers for his pedals. this place by me "royalton music" would be a good fit I think. they mostly give lessons and sell all orchestra instruments too AT LIST. everything in that store is list. there were like a half dozen kids waiting for lessons in the back areas. I had a brief moment of envy of the high school dude there with his cello.
every year they get a national award from the music world as one of the best music stores in the nation.

fender vaporizer was $399 and even all their cables are list.  I obviously wont be buying my guitars from them heh. but I would buy my uber-boutique pedal from them since those aren't big-box throwaway shit regardless of where they get sold from.

Shipping is included. $53 difference.

The better deal is the Whammy for $65 - I think I bought mine (used) for $100 or more.

you're right lumpy. as soon as I saw triple digits in the price I kneejerked. the whammy is a deal. the pharaoh at $65 would also have been a deal.

a pharaoh supreme for $100 would be a deal.

btw, here are those sticks that have served me incredibly well and get compliments from everyone. and don't forget , the game was to make something from scavenged stuff.

The original speakers sound real great in that thing. Two 4s, and a 6x4.

scoring the woodwork pieces really is 90% of the battle.   those school PA cabs look super versatile. make little monitors laying them on their back or a little stack of 1 by whatevers.

Do you ever see those giant fako rack systems that were all the rage in the late 80's-ish?  they had one chassis, but the front panels looked like separate components. they were nasty cheap garbage. they all came with these insanely large 15" 3 ways. the cabinets were light and sort of flimsy.  they were very shallow and almost always ported to try to cheat some bass out of that super cheap 15" woofer....

the speakers is what I am interested in.  I think that poor full range bass performance is EXACTLY what guitar speakers are supposed to sound like, at least on paper, so I need to either try it myself when I finally score some(hey today is Thursday haha) or get the 411 from someone else who has tried them.

at first I was thinking that we derailed this thread, but actually no.

scavenged speaker cabinet material is always a hot deal.
and it doesn't get any hotter than when it is for free.
