Title: The never-ending gear woes of Danny G
Post by: Danny G on February 03, 2011, 11:26:50 AM
Now there are two good gear forums for me to lament my horrible luck with gear.

SO a month ago I ordered a custom replica Dietz 2x15 cabinet from a very respected custom amp/speaker cab builder. But-rate deal, got a good deal on the EV-B's as well.

Got the cabinet last week, and of course with certain clubs behaving in a certain shitfy way, it sat in my van for several days before I could try it out.

Finally, Monday rolls around and I can try it out on our residency gig.

Play one note and notice the rattly/vibratey/farty sound. Shit.

I hope it's not the speaker (used them for several gigs in a loaner 2x15 cab and sounded great). Sounds like the speaker vibrating against the metal speaker grill. Fuck.

Not the end of the world, the guy is a master builder and has built replica Dietz 2x15's before (just not for ME yet, heh). So I have no doubt in is ability to remedy the problem. But that means leaving the house in 22-degree weather while expecting snow to drop it off at his place for use tomorrow night. Shit.

Either way. Shit like this is par for the course with me.

My suggestion? Tighten everything. If it is the metal grill against a speaker, Take it off, and get some foam or plastic washers, and make sure there is ample space for them to move.

Took it back to the guy and he hooked it up to a signal generator and confirmed that the speaker itself was vibrating against the heavy-duty speaker grill. He can fix it with some weather stripping from Home Depot \m/,

Silver lining: Asked him about tubes as he builds and services amps as well. Got me an affordable hookup for power tubes for my Marshall. Gettin that thing retubed very very very soon.

This was a personal referral from Eric Tessmer. Nyah \m/,

Got the cab back again, all he had to do was take the gasket from another EV-B and double layer the top speaker. Problem solved.

Played it last night and it sounded great, far as I could tell. Stupid weird stage at the place doesn't allow me to actually STAND in front of my amp and listen to it. But the place tomorrow night does.
