Title: What does everyone want to see?
Post by: VOLVO))) on January 31, 2011, 06:45:28 PM
Clockwork Green brought up an interesting point, we do have far fewer members than we once did, so there is less general buzz in here than there used to be. So, post your suggestions here. What do you want to see? My number one priority is tutorials. Sure, there are fuckloads of them online, but none of them are here. Between Hemi, myself, Discö Rice, and several others, we certainly have the wisdom to do everything from guitar setups, amp repairs, drum repairs from simple maintainence to refurbs. I want this to be a place of knowledge and learning, like it somewhat used to be. Tutorials detailed with decent quality images, and well written, insightful, fun instructions from friend to friend. I asked Sleestak to mod me so i can resize pics and sticky important threads. This is just my goal.

TL;DR, lets make the Jam Room killer, and educational, as well as fun.

I think a Gear Trading sub-forum would be great and a thread on "Verified" buyers and sellers.

We could just throw a buy/sell/trade thread up and Sunn can sticky it. Maybe switch it out for a new one every month or so, so it doesn't get too cluttered.

Whatever we decide to do, it'll make this place better. I'm almost positive that Hemi would lend his electro-talent, at his convenience. There is no rush to do any of this, but I know I want to get it done. I love teaching, and I love spreading the knowledge. I'm a Courier by day, by night I am a Guitar tech/repair guy. I can do damn near anything save for full refrets. I plan on doing step-by-step tutorials, in a stickied "Guitar Repair/Mod" thread. Simple setups, pickup replacement, fret dresses, and pretty much anything you guys can think of, just ask. I'll be using my guitars/customer's guitars. I'll take detailed pictures, and write out detailed instructions with tips and hints that I use, and learned through my trials and tribulations. I suspect Hemi would do the same for things regarding amps... general maintenance, biases, cleaning pots, etc... He'll get his own stickied thread. Between the four drummers we have here, and our kits, we could easily get a drum-tech thread going, as well. The Obelisk's version of the Jam Room is kind of lacking, IMO... I want those guys to come over here. There's plenty of talent to be had on that side, as well. Gen Disc is just going to be there. If you knew me at all on the old board, I never went in there. Kept me out of trouble, and kept from me neglecting my quest from knowledge.

Keep the suggestions coming, this is all of our responsibility...

I'd like to hear more updates from people in bands, links to new songs etc. In the next month or two I'm going to try and get one of those Zoom HD cameras with the built in stereo mic's and record some demo's of pedals, amps and such. It would be also be nice to see bands here helping each other out with gigs.

That is totally up to those people in bands, y'know? Can't force people to promote. There's nothing stopping those people, so, if they feel like postin', let 'em post!

The pedal demo idea is great, please do this. Try to be as unbiased as humanly possible. :D

I'm sure if someone posted a help-us-out thread, people would help 'em out. You make it seem like we're all a bunch of stingy fuckers, or somethin'! :)

It was mentioned in the other thread about how few members we have compared to the 52k+ that were registered on SR.com, so all of this shit will come in time. If we build it, they will come? Forum of Dreams, anyone?  :D

Shiny, but DURABLE (footboard and baseplate are tested to handle 12,000 psi) and quick, and with the proper setup, really fucking powerful. They're also a breeze to adjust. I'd never have to buy another one, which is great, because I've been through many.

No more axis for me. EVER. Iron Cobras are aight, but a pain in the ass to adjust and the parts tend to get loose and wobbly. The funny thing is I used those red Danmar hardwood beaters you have pictured. The new Speed Cobras feel cheap, as in breakable. My DW 9002 was really powerful feeling, but felt a bit sluggish and the drive shaft started to warp and bow.  I dunno. I've been playing for a long damn time and it feels like the right choice. When I get around to buying my new pedals, I'm gonna try out those J.R. Robinson square red hardwood beaters. If they don't work out I'll probably swap them for my old DW beaters.

but I digress.

I always liked the band threads.  Really dug watching band videos as well (forum members...). Good, bad, and ugly, we all know what it's like to put yourself out there, in front of people who would rather be watching their boyfriends emo band that's coming up next. This place is nice because we can all relate to that...

In regards to the buy/sell/trade threads, and the band-spamminggzzz, Do what you want. I'm not going to intervene. I may consolidate from time to time, if there's like nine bandspams, I might move them into one thread or something for neatness' sake. DoomHawk used to post all the buy/sell threads, and he's not present, and I can't get ahold of him to inform him of this place's existence. I'll definitely have to do different tutorials (in the same thread, obv,) for each different type of guitar... Floyded, Kahlered, Stop-tailed, strat-tailed, Bigsby'd, etc.. So, whatever, y'know, post what you want, and I'll move shit to keep it neat, if I have to. :D

There aren't too many bass players or drummers in here & it's weird but expected cause there are way more guitar players than there are drummers and bass players.  More threads about singing would be rad too.  Singing is f'ing hard and so is writing lyrics.  Way harder than most people think, anyway... Especially those that haven't done it before.  Any dual instrumentalists?  Singer/Guitarists?  Singer/Bassists? Singer/Drummers?

Should we maybe split of a gear forum then? Like a tech area type thing? Or just some sticky threads?

I thnk it's cool that some people want to check out band links. I always feel funny about posting shit, as it seems like a no-spam rule is somehow implanted in my brain. I guess around here it's way better than some of the bs we might come across through our fb family and friends, etc. I'm all for supporting a brother in arms. I also like the idea of more bass talk, since I'm playing bass a lot more nowadays. Practical info is always welcome. I really dig that pedal/amp guts thread. Once it expands a little more it can be a thing of greatness. The intent is there already.

Nah man... Just saying.  It's a guitarist's forum & something other than a guitarists forum would be cool.  Not that I don't think something other than guitarists could benefit from what the lowend has to say but yeah...  Something that separated us would be cool.  Because there is something different that makes up our mojo.

Drums,  guitar,  bass,  keys,  vox.  I've only ever played drums in a band, but I've written a hefty amount of guitar and bass riffs for the bands I've been in. The next thing I'm working on will have me pulling triple duty on drums/keys/vocals, with the other gentleman on bass, vocals and electronics. I'm looking forward to hearing what comes out of this.

Guitar players are just a dime a dozen I guess. I also play keys though, if there's ever any interest about talkin' keys. I have a Kurzweil K2500s that I love dearly and usually comes in handy for Husky stuff in the form of ambient synth pad stuff or organ sounds. At the moment though, I just use it to entertain my kids with Billy Joel songs. They don't care.

I have a friend who has been into synths for probably 20 years, and he has an impressive collection. Easily the most I've seen in one place. I mean crazy shit, like Arps, Oberheims, Sequential Circuits', Ensoniqs, a Linndrum, Yamaha DX7s, a Fairlight (!). Who has a fucking Fairlight? It's a monster! Anyway, I've gotten more interested in these, and hope to pick up an old synth just to play around with. Thinking about an Ensoniq Mirage if I can find one at a decent price, in decent condition. Anyway...

I would like to see either a regular buy/sell thread or sticky. I always enjoyed those. Although it won't feel quite the same unless Lippy is asking if he can have it, whatever "it" might be at the time.

Maybe just let the Jam Room run like it always did. We don't need a moderator with a vision. We don't need a bunch of sticky threads up at the top. Don't force it, just let it be what it is.

I'm not a moderator, I'm just allowed to sticky shit and move posts around. Not much moderating to be done in here. There are some technical things, and technical questions that were asked daily on the old board. Same shit, same threads. Why not get some of it out of the way to make room for more gear-nerd-talk and general banter? There would be 3-4 stickies, at most. I also believe there was a bunch of people who wanted stickies on the old board, and we never got them. If there are any more voices of dissent, please speak up.

As for the multi-instrumentalists, I play bass/drums/guitar/piano...

I mostly lurked on the old SR forums and rarely posted but some of my thoughts.

Always thought there were a lot of people here that played bass but not so many that play it as their primary instrument.  Personally I play bass well as my primary instrument (8 years) guitar ok (1.5 years) and I can sing mediocre and am pretty good at programming drums (6 years).  I also know a pretty decent amount of music theory but there are some gaps in my theory knowledge because I'm self taught (I know a pretty decent amount about harmony and intervals).  I'm one of those guys that buys all the books and reads them.

One thing I always liked about the jam room was everybody posting their bands stuff a lot of the people on here have quality music.

The main thing that I always wanted to see in the jam room (or any other forum for that matter) is music theory SPECIFIC to the genre of metal/doom/stoner.  Such as drum/rhythm theory, specific commonly used chord progressions, common chord substitutions, stuff like that.  Like I know how to make my own progressions and key changes, etc. but I have no idea of the common conventions that are used for this type of music which is why most of my music ends up taking a long time to write because I basically don't know what chords I should try first and have to powerthrough a bunch of different versions of the same section until it sounds right.

But if it would help I can write and post a bunch of basic theory stuff on scales/harmony/intervals this weekend.  Seems like a lot of the people on here already know the basics but might help in attracting new people.  Also someone needs to get logicalfrank on here always liked his input.

I like the idea of tutorial threads, maybe have a sub-forum labeled "tutorials" so you can just post them all there.

I also very much like the idea of a sticky'd buy/sell/trade thread.
Title: Re: What does everyone want to see?

Yeah, Boobies go well with anything. I'll take 2 of those.

A buy/sell/trade thread would be most interesting. I'll take a monthly one of those.

A Jam thread may be cool too. Every month some else posts a new backing track, and we get to  boast our tones and wicked playing to alla yinz. I'll take one of those too.

I like the idea of the guts/ tech sticky. Nice, got one of those.

Maybe kinda, ghey of me, but I think one reason this forum gets a blah reaction is the color scheme is boring. Makes it seem dead here, regardless of content. New color scheme, I'll take one of those too.
Title: Re: What does everyone want to see?
Post by: Chovie D on February 01, 2011, 11:25:57 AM
just post more, ask questions and they will get answered.

A single FAQ sticky would be alright:
"can I run my guitar thru a bass amp?"
"How do I get ewiz tone?"
"why is Chovie d so friggin cool? how does he do it?"
etc.

You know , most people concentrate on things like gear and tone and while that stuff is important, it is far less important than the other things that go into being a great musician or being in a great band. Its in your head, not your amp. People think if they get the gear secrets, they will suddenly be able to make good music but it doesnt work that way at all.I guess Im offering this as a tip of sorts. Try not to get too caught up into the gear thing. YES you want good tone, but the other stuff is equally if not more importnat. How to perform, how to have confidence, how to be in a band, how tio roject what you want the audience to take away from your show, how to interact with an audience and with your fellow musicians, attitude, style, originality...all more important than a Model T.

as far as technique or gear, I will usually post a youtube vid in my response if I can find one. It helps sometimes.
Ive got some guitar technique to share, but I dont know how to make and post tab. Occasionally I'll throw out a tidbit but its hard t explain without tab.
There is a guitar key of sorts that will open doors (no... not the blues box) but I have no way of posting it or even describing it accurately.

meh

Alright, so we're feelin' a separate tech-related forum? I figured that would just be an extra click for some people, and people are lazy. Stickied threads are already there, and you can post your questions in them blah, blah. Trying to keep it as simple as possible. The Jam Room was always kind of known for giving really great technical advice, so I don't know if it would be in our best interest to make a sub-forum, unless it can somehow be attached to this forum, literally. I feel like a lot of questions go un-asked in here because they're too simple. You know, I've never seen a thread on how to file a nut, or level a Floyd, or anything of the sort. I think if it was somehow advertised that people here have that knowledge, and are willing to share, more people would come and join the party... Alright, for now, we'll just let the questions be asked, and I'll talk to Sleestak about a tech-sub forum unless you clowns decide otherwise. I still do like the guts thread, it's worth keeping around.

I remember the redundant questions on the old board were what drove all the real hep cats away. I think an FAQ may find it's way on here, at some point. We'll have to have a pool of questions that we all never want to answer again. haha.

The color scheme isn't my department, sleekstak and socket are the ones to talk to about that. The basic simple-machines forum look is pretty dull, though, I understand.

sub forum is a bad idea for the reason you mentioned. extra click and theres not enough posts in this forum as it is, let alne dividing them up.

The FAQ questions dont drive people away, we just get a bit tired of answering them over and over but they dont bug poeple out too bad.

The only thing that drives people away is slithermeth, thank fucking god he doesnt post in the jam room or Id be outta here.

Great ideas.  I did a couple of step-by-step tutorials on the old board.  I modded my Memory Man DLX way back in 2000.  I took a broken Snarling Dogs Wah and ran the delay pot into it so you didn't have to bend over to control the speed.  I can do Muff tone wicker mods, Crybaby and Vox mods and the DS-1 spider mod too.  You've got some great ideas SUNN0)), can't wait to see this board grow.

I think Chovie is on to something. Sticky two threads on the top: FAQ and Tutorials. Keep the first post in the FAQ updated with links to threads answering the more basic questions. Same goes for the tutorials.

I honestly don't remember people asking fundamental questions in the jam room being a problem. That's part of what made the Jam Room great, because we were learning together. It wasn't just a place to show off our gear or tech skills.

We don't need a bunch of separate forums or stickies. If a thread generates enough interest, it will stay at the top on it's own.

I'd like to see more info resources for organising band shit

stuff like:

how do I find a good band member? (this topic came up pretty regularly on the old site)
who wants book shows in XYZ area?
where should my band record/are we ready to record/what can I expect?
how to get your music reviewed on websites/street press/whatever

and so on

I think this crowd would be great for adressing these kinda topics, because the regulars seem to mostly be dudes who actually play shows, or used to at any rate.  Every other place I've been to has been way more dominated by teenage bedroom players, or white collar professionals who have never taken their PRS and their Dumble up on a stage.
