Title: What is the ultimate Stoner Rock guitar?
Post by: FrankenFretter on July 06, 2012, 04:46:30 PM
Of course, this is purely subjective. I was just wondering out loud as whether there is such a thing or not?
SG?
Les Paul?
Some kind of SuperStrat?
Shitty department store guitar from the 60's or 70's?
Ukulele?
Jazzmaster?
Tele?

What say you, and why?

It's hard not to play pauls. If I had to break away, I'd go Tele. Prolly go RD before an SG but that's more personal tastes than anything.

Superstrats may not always fit the ideal "stonerrock" vibe but are super easy players and extremely flexible in role.

SG's seem to be the most common but not like they were 15 or so years ago.

les paul special?  you'd have to work kinda hard to make things not sound somewhere within the broad ambit of Stoner Rock with P90s

Seems like LP's may have passed them.

I've heard good stoner heaviness outta plenty of different guitar brands/models, but I'll also jump on the "used to be the SG, now the LP" bandwagon.

As far as the stereotype goes, yeah, it's the Lester now.

it totally depends on what kind of tone your aiming for.  "stoner rock" covers a wide range of sounds and you can pretty much dial in any kind of bitchin tone with the right combo of pickups, pedals and amp.

which guitarist's tone do you sticks out for you most? what kind of tone are you aiming for?

you can google rig setups that your favourite guitarists use.

i would say that humbuckers versus single coils are the only factor that will determine the amount of drive/punch/volume in your overall tone but pedals will get you pretty much any sound youre looking for.

Add one more to the room of "used to be the SG, now the LP" bandwagon.

An SR guitar to me is one that the person got cheap and it just sounds heavy.

Anyway, throw in Iceman's and Mockingbirds.

I'm going with SG if you're pushing 40 like me and 20+years of sk8/snowboarding and big heavy amps.  My Paul was not comfortable like it was in '92 when I was 19.   But definitely 'buckers are the go-to pup.  What they're dropped into is usually not as important.

I agree that the Paul seems to be more prevalent in SR these days. But does that embody the spirit of SR? Or is there such a thing?

I think that as long as you have heaping manure-shovels of fuzz, you can use almost anything for "that" tone. I like the idea of the Paul Jr, or generally any solid body with P90s, though. Maybe because I own three P90s guitars? Maybe. There's something just ballsy about a P90. Then again, hums do have a fuller sound. Tough call.

I do also kind of like the pawn shop/el cheapo idea. It seems more the route a real stoner would take if he suddenly decided he wanted to play guitar. I guess I should clarify; a poor stoner.

I would never have thought of an Iceman. I guess I'll always associate that with Paul Stanley, which is not my idea of a stoner rock guitarist.

When I think of stoner I think of SGs.  Why? And with the popular vote going toward Lesters?  All mahogany.  That is detuned wood my initiates.  That maple cap on the lesters adds a snap to the tone that says "I'm about to play some leads."  All mahogany says "I'm going to melt your ass with riffs of Hell sludge!".

That being said...I used to play SGs now I play a MIK LP ;D

You'll say LP until you see Earthless. You'll say strat until you see Red Fang. You'll say Guild until you see Melvins. You'll say Electrical until you see HOF. Then you'll say First Act. Pretty much there isn't an ultimate. They can all work.

My vote aside from ^ is the Les Paul. Neck pup and a bit of distortion and you're heavy as fuck although that goes for most guitars.

Found some info, said to be heavier than Les Pauls! I'd at least like to play one sometime, I imagine they are worth quite a bit now.

One of those brands Rondo sells should make a clone.

The sc350 is all mahogany the others are all maple. I got mine for $275 off evilbay.  It really isnt as heavy as a les paul but it sounds like it (almost). i love mine. The neck seems unusually long even for a 24 fret. It wont fit in any of my cases. I kinda treat it like a beater guitar. I keep it in my car without a case all the time in hopes of getting into an impromptu jam session with someone. I really wanted a 24 fret bolt on mahogany guitar and this bad pup matched all the requirements and then some.

p.s.-my buttpussy is currently awaiting my arrival at my drummers house

What was the guitar that Fatsoforgetso? guy from the old board used a lot. I think that was his username, if not he was from Colorado. Some kind of a mix between an lp jr. cut and an ovation clone from rondo.

The best way to determine the most correct answer would be to list all the seminal "stoner" bands and tally the guitar(s) that contributed to their sounds.

Then throw that list away because the correct answer is an SG because Tony Iommi played one of those.

Those T-40s and 60s are really under rated, and you can sometimes find them on CL for pretty cheap. US made, very solid instruments.

Yes, that is an Eko Manta that I posted. I came pretty close to buying one a few weeks ago, but bought this instead (always wanted a Mosrite):

For a small fee I will Photoshop you into the band of your choice. "Look! I'm the old second guitar player in Sleep!" or "I was the drum tech for Foghat during their 1977 US tour!"

Great for t-shirts or perhaps a framed photo in your den.

As far as basses go... I started out w/ a Reverend Rumblefish.  That bass still fucking slays, but it's too nice to take to bars so it sits at home (1 of 30 made in bugeye!).  It's my #1 home bass for sure though.

After I put the Reverend away I got a Japanese Fender P, then a Peavey T-40, then two late-70s Yamaha BBs (800 and 1000), and now I play G&L Tributes.  The G&Ls just sound huge.  Way huger than anything else I've ever owned & I love them.  I played the Yamahas for a while though.  Probably close to a year.  I still love those basses too.

Matt's Yamaha SGs are awesome.  I like them a hell of a lot more than when he had his Gibson SG.

Ggguuuhhh... why are Swedes so badass at making throwback rock?!

Thanks for posting this (regardless of whether or not you're in the band  ;)), as I'd never checked these dudes out before.

WTF is the awesome looking stack that's not Orange in that pic?

I'm not sure what that stack is, but they played all Orange on stage.  Even the bassist.  It sounded fucking amazing.  The guy can fucking sing live too.  Not the type that nails it on the album but can never recreate it.  Also, they had Radio Moscow open, who I had never heard of before that night.  Holy shit...they rock dude.  Check them out as well if you like Graveyard.  And before anyone asks, I'm not in Radio Moscow either...

Problem w/ a Rick is they're thin sounding.  To each his own, for sure, but I have little love for a Rick for heavy music.  Graveyard-y sort of stuff, sure.  Big, heavy, bassy, sludgy metal... Not really.  I also had a Gibson RD Artist that I didn't love as much as my Yamaha BBs or G&L L-2000s.  Weird.

I disagree, however I think the amp has a lot yo do with it. for whatever its worth every riff I ever recorded with damnweevil was on my rick, I definitely never had an issue with bringing the thunder. I do believe tone is as much in a players hands as any other part of the chain, strings, instrument, effects, amps and cabs.

That is the great thing about driven valve amps. Now go find a clean rick sound, even on the Beatles albums is pretty hairy.

Yeah, you change a cap to one with a different value to bring out some more low end. The new 4003's have a push-pull on the bridge tone pot which engages that circuit. They are even more versatile. I can't wait to get the second rig running to have some rick-o-sound.

Back to guitars.

I think this one has contributed quite a bit to the "desert sound"

The Jam was an Ibanez, and think recordings were done with a precision, was talking to a guy regarding such things at length because he is borrowing my CMI copy for the purpose. Plus, Marshall amps have got to be the least clean 'clean' sound you can get. Not sure about Rush.

The thinness mod was pulling the cap from the bridge pickup, which was alike a reverse tone control that only let highs through so it wouldn't blow up guitar cabs when using Ric-o-sound.

The Jam played Rickenbackers. (Mods would play Ibanez? ??? LOL) I saw them three times in the 80s, so I can say that with certainty. Maybe at the end, they weren't playing Ricks? (I stopped listening to them when they went Motown).

Geddy Lee played a Rick in early Rush. Wikipedia says he used a Rick on Fly By Night, Caress of Steel, 2112, A Farewell to Kings, and Hemispheres albums and tours. My friends were bombarding me with Rush during this time (one guy played a Rick because Geddy did) so I know this to be true.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geddy_Lee#Bass_guitars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geddy_Lee#Bass_guitars)

Not trying to bicker, but that "bouncy" clean tone is (IMO) the Rick bass' signature sound.

Yeah, it seems like some of my favorite stoner rock riffs were done on an SG. Teles and semi-hollow/hollow bodies seem to be really good for it too imo.

On further review, maybe those Rick bass players weren't all that clean (some overdrive there). Mr. Foxen may be right in the larger sense (that a lot of Rick players are using overdrive or distortion). More so than other brands? I don't know.

How about Rick James? John Taylor from Duran Duran? (I hate them, but good bass player). Go nuts with this list here:

Bruce Foxton most definitely played an Ibanez Ric copy on at least the first album. Was only after that he got a real Ric and then  changed to a P-Bass by All Mod Cons. Apparently he wanted a bass that looked like a Ric but sounded like an EB-0.

According to some Jam page, it was a real rick first for style, but didn't like the sound. Either story sounds plausible, once you get to the point you actually care about the quality of the instrument and hear tone with your ears, the Ibanez would tend to come on top, especially compared to the last pick Ricks that got exported, but starting with the cheaper instrument also sounds likely. Rick has this ton of rabid fanboys thing that claim anything was a Rick, that list has Peter Hook on it FFS, he had a Hondo copy that was so shit he gave it away to a kid who sold it without using his name for a charity tombola. Imagine if anything shaped like a P bass got claimed as a Fender.

Also, Cliff Burton played an Aria Rick copy with the mudbucker in the neck position. Think he had a real one too, but might just have been the later aria with smaller pickup. Edit: having done a google image search, its always the Aria with mudbucker.

After searching the memory banks, I do remember Bruce Foxton playing a black Fender something on the 2nd show. (It was the 80s and I was probably high). I also didn't look at the headstock to know if he was playing a real Rick on the first show. So, 'D'oh!'.

Headstock may well not have helped, used to be able to get rick truss covers. About the only way to tell the good rick copies from the real thing was metric truss rod nuts, plus the good copies had better CNC machining and nicer wiring.

It seems like some of you are really splitting hairs. I love Rickenbacker basses (it's not a monogamous kind of love, but it's a profound one). I don't get what the debate here is. Does anyone play "Stoner Rock" with a sparkling clean tone? I like growl.I like grit. As for the supposed lack of bottom end, the push/pull pot is a cool option that makes a great bass even more versatile. Y'allz crazy.

The ultimate metal guitar is the Dean V-coustic.  I don't know about the ultimate guitar for stoner rock but I play a 1984 Guild S-100.  At work my test guitar is a pre-Squire 1970's Japanese Fender Strat copy.
