Title: Best wahs for buckers / dist
Post by: Ombrenuit on May 16, 2012, 01:08:26 PM
I have a crybaby and the treble shreds ear drums. Using an orange clone with a superfuzz at the moment and an SG.

What's a good wah wah for doom / electric wizard shit that won't have tone suck, weird impedance issues, or a trebly sweep?

Which crybaby? There's so many, there's 101 things you can do to a Crybaby to lessen the suck. ;)

It's a gcb95. I didn't like it stock so I tried the mods suggested on http://www.diyguitarist.com/DIYStompboxes/WahMod.htm but that took away all the sweep. Now it's useless. So I was thinking about putting an area 51 pcb in it or getting a different wah.

What mods would you suggest? I'm good with a soldering iron.

You might want to go halfways to making it a bass wah, not quite all the way.

Read http://www.geofex.com/article_folders/wahpedl/wahped.htm (http://www.geofex.com/article_folders/wahpedl/wahped.htm) and also http://www.wah-wah.co.uk/diy.html (http://www.wah-wah.co.uk/diy.html) the latter being a nice simple pictorial, I'd just change one component at a time, probably starting with the sweep cap. Might be worth starting back with stock values, or maybe not.

The circuit is basic enough to be tuneable, so you shouldn't need to start with a whole new PCB.

Maybe you could try the Dunlop JC95 Jerry Cantrell Wah, it seems to have more bottom end and less high end than the GCB-95:

Of course, if money is not an issue for you there's always the never-ending boutique (or almost boutique) market with brands like Fulltone, Real McCoy Custom, Area 51, Budda, Wilson FX, Gig-FX, MXR, T-Rex, Voodoo Lab and so on.

My current pedal is the RMC6FL Wheels Of Fire Wah from Real McCoy Custom, I like it a lot, even though is a little bit expensive but the sound is great and it has tons of features that really helps to mold your sound.

I think the one on the right is non-stock, the one on the left (JC) looks like the stock one. Weird.

Thanks for the links Hemisaurus. Guess I'll desolder the expensive ass inductor and breadboard the circuit. Should make for a fun Sunday.

Try adjusting the gearing on the pot travel first. Set the travel so that it won't turn the pot into the "ear-spear zone."

That's the #1 "mod" for Crybabies.

Or spend < $3 at your local RadioShack and get a new one http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103254 (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103254) (see the geofex link) ;)

I've tried modded crybabys and I have an area 51. Hands down my budwah is the best wah at least for me. Keeps things fat and heavy not thin and shitty.

Same circuit, with true bypass and an impedance buffer :) The sweep cap is bigger.
