Every store near me is too expensive.
www.juststrings.com (http://www.juststrings.com)
I'm not sure if it's the "cheapest" but it is pretty good.
Do you not find much difference in the differnet types of strings? Unfortunately I like really expensive strings (Pyramid's) but fortunately I also like the sound of old strings so I only change them once a year or so and I never break strings.
Got mine from zzounds.com (http://zzounds.com)
I usually wait for WalGuitarMartCenter's "HUGE WEEKEND BLOWOUT!!!! BUY ONE SET GET FIFTY FREEEEEEEE!!!" which of course is most weekends...
I know this might be an unpopular opinion, but in thirty+ years of playing, I've never been able to discern a difference in brands. Steel strings are steel strings that just do what steel strings do. ( joke about "your ears are too dumb to hear the diff!!")
GC near me is just as bad as some of the 'friendly mom and pop' stores here.
I mostly use EB and DR's, like Senor Beer, I don't hear that much of a difference in strings. Clockwork, I can't believe you leave strings on that long. I try to change mine every 3 weeks if I don't break any strings. Two or less if I was playing with people again.
Use Google Shopping.

This is where I get my strings (Earnie Ball).
eBay. Not that I break strings often anymore.
I found a buy it now a long time ago for two boxes, it was 20 sets I think, and that's been holding out for me.
It ended up being $3 a set or something like that.
I find that if the saddles and nuts are smooth*, strings rarely break for me. One nice thing to leaving them on for months is how awesome fresh ones sound when you change...
* That's what she said, inc.
I never change strings. Don't really notice much difference with a ton of fuzz.
I don't break strings very often either. Maybe once in 5+ years, and that was from accidentally tuning from C stnd to E stnd too fast when I thought the tuner was set to D.
Best deal seems to be SamAsh Direct, it's $3.89 for a pack of regular slinkies, but it's free shipping on any size of order.
Zzounds will do you a 3 pack of the same for $12.50. which is more and they add shipping
Juststrings is $3.57 a set, but the cheapest shipping option is $7.
http://www.samash.com/ (http://www.samash.com/)
Yeah but a set of D'addario XLs from Sam Ash is $6.49 for the set I would get from juststrings for $3-$4 depending on gauge. That coupled with never just ordering one set at a time kinda balances out.
I'm always on that 3-pack of slinkies hustle on samash
are you guys really complaining about guitar string prices?
this is what I am using right now

Anybody ever try these? $2.39 a set.

Wow 'tis cheaper than we were flogging them for in 1989 :o
I think I might order some. I'll report back.
Wow. Thanks for the scoop. I just ordered a case (12) of GHS .012s for under $32 including shipping.
From which place?
Shit. I meant to say GFS, not GHS -- the Xaviere nickels.
Aha!
Anyone using www.stringsandbeyond.com
A lot cheaper for us overses to order from... Including shipping.
Just to followup: I really don't care for the Xaviere cheapie strings I got a case of. They just sound lifeless and flat to me. Weird, because I never put too much stock into there being big differences in strings before. Held off on reviewing them until I tried them on at least three of my guitars. Just not cutting it.

I guess I'll go back to buying the Ernie Balls I usually buy and use these as emergency I'm-broke-as-fuck backups or something.
I'm digging Elixirs, they cost loads more than normal strings, but had a guy comment on loving the sound of new strings playing my guitar, strings are 8 months old.
Thanks for the heads-up, Jake. Sorry you had to take one for the team.
The one set of Elixirs I tried, I liked a lot. They really did stay fresh for quite a bit longer.
black friday. 12sets for $20 at guitar center.
It's amazing to me that some of you can have strings for so long. I've known this for awhile, but my sweat is just the death of strings (and nickle hardware come to find out). I wipe them thoroughly after playing, but within 5 hours of playing there's black shit where my hands rest a lot. I'm also surprised at the lack of brand loyalty for strings. Maybe they don't sound all that different when you first put them on, but they feel different and tend to have different lifetimes. Nothing makes me happy like a fresh set of GHS boomers on my strat.
Not sure about the cost comparison but I go through juststrings.com because of this-
http://www.juststrings.com/electricxlnickelwounddaddarioguitarsinglestrings.html
I get the 48 and 62 to combine with 4 from a set of 13s. I'd prefer slightly thinner strings but I hate fret buzz.
ok hate GC all you want, but black Friday it's on. 12 sets of martin strings for $25. those are quicky cash items, just buy them, no curriculum vitae needed.

You could raise your action a bit and use a lighter string.
