For analog, I really like the Malekko 616. The modulations can be turned off, subtle, wavy or just plain crazy. You can also switch between true bypass and buffered bypass which is nice. For a nice budget digital delay, it's hard to beat the TC Electronic Flashback...tons of sounds as well as buffered/true bypass options, quarter notes or dotted 8th notes for fun.

If you're after a delay-type pedal with 'different' characteristics, you can't go past this:

I'm kind of a delay horder and the Earthquaker Devices stuff is awesome and not overpriced.

The Disaster Transport is probably my favorite delay and it's pretty cheap.

I also have a Dispatch Master and it's nice if you need extra reverb but I find the delay in it is pretty cold.

I have a couple of analog echos, some digital delays, tried the Empress super delay... the Disaster Transport sounds the best.

The Stereo Memory Man with Hazari is actually surprisingly good as well but has way too many settings.

My personal favorite is the Deluxe Memory Man just as you can some of the craziest oscillation sounds. I actually have mine up for sale here in the sale thread. ;)

For bass I love my DD3 but I just built an Echo Base for guitar and noise, sounds amazing and very similar to a DMM despite it using a digital chip, lush delay with/without modulation right up to self oscillating crazy noise. The three people who've tried it are in love with it.

Ibanez DE7 doesn't have trails, so when you switch it off, you delay gets chopped off. It's fine for 'always on' or rock band situations (solo ends, your back to the verse right away). Maybe not great for atmospheric stuff where you want it on & off.

Line 6 DL-4 is loaded with options, check that one out. It's big though.

dl4 is damn good. it has 3 presetable options, reverse delay, loooong delays, taptempo, does a pretty nice sounding space echo imitation, and i love the looper function.

its downsides are they are known to crap out, its large footprint and its dedicated powersupply, and they arent cheap.

I like mine alot for home, it doesnt go on the pedalboard tho, too big mostly. good pedal.

i always wanted to get a dl4, but all the ones i've seen in use sound plastic to me. but, it could also be the generic indie bands tone, too.

A friend of mine swears by the Boss GiGi Delay. He is a bit of a delay freak and has had a lot of them. I personally just traded my newer Rat2 for a Memory Boy(the smaller one) and i am not a fan yet. Honestly i cant get any delay sounds out of it...mostly chorus and pitch shifting so far. I may be doing something wrong. That said I have only used it once!

Anyone used a Boss RE-20?

I've been using one for the last 3 months and I love it. I've been through a ton of delays over the last couple of years but this one has a lot of great usable features. Just make sure you use an isolated power source. It can get noisy if you don't. With my voodoo labs PP+2 it's very quiet.

One of the few pedals that never seem to leave Mike Scheidt's pedalboard is the DOD DFX9. Might be worth looking into?
I've used the MXR Carbon Copy, 600ms of delay and an internal trim pot to mess around with, they're usually somewhat cheap.

What's the internal trim pot for?

There's actually two internal trim pots that control modulation width and rate.

I've got one up for grabs for $75 over in the FOR SALE thread, if'n yer interested.

The Deluxe Memory Man has served me well for years.  The only other delay I use with any frequency (it's not a pedal, so maybe it doesn't count for this thread) is the Blacet Time Machine synth module (http://www.blacet.com/TM2050.html).  I'm going to have to check out some of the other delays here, it's definitely my favorite effect...

Say what you want but those CC's are pretty nifty if you want analog delay in a compact box with modulation, long times, and affordable.

I loved my Deluxe Memory Man, but I had to sell it when I was out of work. I've thought of getting another, but I can't see spending the money.
Since I'm mostly a bedroom player these days I can't justify spending big bucks on boutique stuff either.

I've been looking at other budget options. Does anyone have an opinion on, or experience with, the Seymour Duncan Deja Vu?
I've been wanting to get a tap tempo delay that sub-divides for a while. Been seeing these for pretty reasonable prices.

I had recently seen some gear rundowns with GE Smith on his rig for the Roger Waters The Wall tour.
He's been using it in conjunction with a Carbon Copy to get all of the Pink Floyd guitar and bass parts.

It's hard to beat the Malekko 616...like a carbon copy in size and that they're analog with modulated delays but its trippier. The TC Electronic will do a damn good job giving you various tastes of other delays for not much money. The Akai Headrush sounds good and also makes an excellent looper for about $150.

^Do either of those do a sub divided tap-tempo? That is an essential feature for me.

i used to have a boss dd6(actually friend let me borrow it for over a year and i forgot it wasnt mine till he asked for it back) and i wish i still had it. i wanted a more warm delay in which i got the MXR Carbon Copy which is great and then i also picked up a Boss Rv3 which is also great to push the envelope on the delay sounds that the Carbon Copy cant achieve

I used to have the Mooger delay. Believe the hype on that one, it is W I C K E D.

The Mem Men delays are pretty nice, but the new Way Huge Supa Puss is the one to own now!

$250 street.

Real clean, tone control, and EXP pedal input.

Wampler FTE (http://www.wamplerpedals.com/faux/tape-echo.html) is pretty convincing too and a little cheaper than Strymon.  Won't do sound-on-sound, though.

I loved both Deluxe Memory Man's I owned (Big Box and XO) but I hate how they would clip out so easily.

Right now I am using a Retro-Sonic Analog Delay which is a Boss DM-2 with double the delay time and a tone control, pretty sweet.

Neighbor, check out the Tech21 DLATT it might be a decent alternative.

I was actually kind of under-whelmed with the Supa-Puss demo.

Skreddy Echo is supposed to be pretty damn close to an Echoplex.

If you're feeling DIY the 1776 Effects Multiplex Echo is my current favorite thing ever. Three settings, including the Echoplex. $14 for the board plus your parts and your time. I like it so much I'm considering building another one, just in case. Not nearly as many bells and whistles as the Strymon El Cap, though. (And no tap tempo and no sound-on-sound, to other relevant thread concerns.)

1776 one is a good DIY PT2399 based emulation if you wanna go that route. I bought a Strymon El Cap, excited to play it when it comes in.

Kinda tough to say, as I had all of the components on hand. Uh, probably another $50-$60 depending on your resistor/capacitor/opamp stash? That may be a little high - and I really do love the pedal - but I also don't wanna get your hopes up.

there are some weird ones... an "asynchronous" delay (i guess the trails are lopsided tempo?) I forget who makes that one... Or delays with an effects loop, so your trails can be flanged or harmonized or whatever.

The problem with fancy delays IMO is that sometimes when you have all that racket happening (full band or whatever) a lot of the subtle details can get lost (like putting a phaser on your trails). Your delay was backwards, can anybody hear that? Maybe not.

That Rainbow Machine does look awesome though...

Gotcha. The only thing I've really made was a big muff clone but it came with everything I needed so I have no extra components laying around. Well I'll keep that in mind for the future if I decide to make one.

Its digital but the tape and bucket brigade simulations are so good you probably could not tell the
