Title: cheapest rig (just for fun)
Post by: justinhedrick on August 25, 2011, 04:47:12 PM
what's the cheapest rig you can put together including everything: guitar/bass, effects, amp/cab that you'd play out with?

rules: you can only use new/used stuff that you can find online (musicgoround/ebay/guitar center are all ok). cables aren't that big of a deal, as we can pick those up for cheap anywhere.

i'll start:

guitar: squier bullet strat: $80 at music go round
pedals: dano french toast $30 new, behringer EQ pedal $30 new
amp: peavey supreme head $120 music go round
cab: sonic 4x12 cab: $100 on clearance at music go round.

add $40 for some guitar cables and make them throw in a strap, new set of strings, and clip on tuner when i buy it all, and i'd be out the door for $400 before taxes.

Yamaha B-100 $50
Peavey 2x15 $50
Peavey 5 string $75

no pedals.

I have gigged the rig, but the 5 string is my backup, I use my other one.

$50 rat pedal
$8 eq pedal
$125 peavey bandit
$50 randall 2x15

but i didn't . . . (i'm just giving you shit my mang)

Oops, noped missed that. I spend ages waiting to find a piece at the right price. Hence the $50 cab and amp and $75 bass. I did buy all this stuff online, on craigslist. Where's the fun in paying the average price ???

You can't guarantee anything you find online is going to work or sound good, nor have you factored in shipping or taxes ;)

http://ames.craigslist.org/msg/2544358867.html (http://ames.craigslist.org/msg/2544358867.html) $40 bass
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/msg/2555710890.html (http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/msg/2555710890.html) $40 Acoustic D1 bass head
http://duluth.craigslist.org/msg/2562946909.html (http://duluth.craigslist.org/msg/2562946909.html) $30 15" bass cab

or

I'm sure the drums can be done cheaper, but probably not better for the price. That kit is not just gig-able. It's roadworthy.

I'm sure I could get even cheaper than this, but I could actually play with this and get reasonably close to the tone and volume I like live:

SX Ursa Bass - $109.95
Behringer Ultrabass BX4500H - $250.99
Peavey Headliner 410 - $299.99
Danelectro FAB overdrive or distortion - $14.99

Total - $675.92 (not including sales tax)

Apologies to justin for hijacking his thread as usual, with nonsense. Might I suggest a similar, but different idea.

You've hit rock-bottom, all your gear is sold, suddenly your band is signed because of a demo made in easier times, you have a $500 advance, you have to get a giggable rig, suitable for the forthcoming national tour, so get cases etc.

Some people (not Sunn) don't get the meaning of cheap ;)

120 bucks used, and I'm out. 380 bucks for more zipties and extra gilded patch cables.

You need a hobby, to keep you occupied at your job ;D

Y'know Sunn, I played a show where the bassplayer in the other band used a Squier starterpack, P Bass copy and a tiny amp. I think the engineer might have mic'd the amp too ;D

Amp
Traynor: $150
http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/msg/2565936090.html

Cab
Peavey 2X15:$250

Bass
Squier P: $80
http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/msg/2499200444.html

Guitar
Squier Strat: $70
http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/msg/2564740415.html

Also gimme any $20 OD/Dirt pedal and I just squeak by the $500 Hemi limit (edit: Fuck cases, they are Squiers, I'll destroy them on stage the last night of the tour anyway.)
(I decided to find a guitar and a bass but i'd only need one)

Well, if you just want to go as cheap as possible, with zero discrimination...

Spirit Electric Guitar - $40 http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/msg/2566094040.html (http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/msg/2566094040.html)

Crate amp + 4x12 cab - $170 http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/msg/2566774271.html (http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/msg/2566774271.html)

Total - $210   ...and you could probably talk that second guitar into throwing in a distortion pedal or talk it down another $10 or so.

Hell, if you're patient and have a little competence repairing gear, you could probably get an entire rig for free or next to nothing. I've gotten a couple free Kramers and such over the years that just needed to be rewired and set up, amps that needed a new switch or a crappy set of drums that needed heads.

Not bad, I got a Nady 18" for $40.

But in terms of sound, you'd be better with the Peavey 2x15, you get more air moved, and more efficiency, they're generally only 150W drivers in them, so they can get loud for low watts like the Traynor's 50. I thought I'd overpaid paying $140 for my first one, as i paid only $50 for my second. I've seen them go locally for $100 or so.

Got me beat, I'm thinking of spending $7 on parts to make justin his Rams Head.

2 x $1.89 2 packs of 0.1uF caps        - $4
1 x $2.99 15 pack of PNP transistors - $3

The 10uF cap I already have and the assorted resistors. All parts from the shack, of all places.   :)

So that's like $7 on whatever he paid for it. Of course there's no possibility in the world it's going to sound better than the $100+ originals ;D

The above statement is sarcasm.

I need suggestions for a good non-piece of shit portable soldering iron. Fuck Shack irons, I've been through just about 50. I need something that can go in my tool kit, and doesn't need a wall plug. I guess I could carry a converter but... meh.

This is what's on my bench:

I've had the same couple of shack irons for 15 years, you just need to be nice to them. I keep meaning to get a Weller and never quite getting round to it. They (someguy not shack) used to sell green portable irons, with a red switch, that ran on butane cartridges, they used to be good for on the road stuff, nowadays I just carry the shack iron and use the nearest wallplug ;)

So get butane, or be nice to your shack irons ;D

Weller makes a battery powered iron. 20 bucks, bought already, hahaha. I've been soldering on the spot with a butane torch. It's a bitch, but gets the job done.

Post by: Hemisaurus on August 26, 2011, 08:20:47 PM
Wasn't a torch, it was an iron, heated by butane, butane torch, you might as well be doing it with a Zippo or a Bic (been there, done that).

Fender Starcaster (used, $70-$100) through a little SP90 amp (used, $30).
The guitar & amp compliment each other (by design).  Low fi but tasty.

(The newer Starcasters seem to have weaker pups, though)
