Title: Sunn 215 cab- needs some identification
Post by: hayseed on March 12, 2011, 08:32:07 PM
I got this in a trade for an Acoustic cab. I am using it under my Coli 300. Not sure what model it is specifically(i think 215 S). I was told it was a 1968.  It is currently loaded with a Sunn Guitar Transducer and a Jensen Special Design, both 15"s. I plan to remove and replace them 2 EV SRO 15"s that currently live in a very nice early 70's Fender Bassman 215 cab i acquired.

Also i am looking for the input jack plate if anyone knows of where i could get one. Also I am looking for a mate for it (another Sunn 215 of the same make to spend their lives together and breed new Sunn 215 cabs), if anyone knows of any.

I am also parting with the Bassman cab if anyone is interested. I have the original Oxford Fender Special Designs that were in it but they need re coned.

The Sunn looks like an earlier era (pre-70's). In the 70's they switched to the black/white/red color scheme. I'm not sure if Fender ever released the 15's for Sunn, but when Fender bought them out and started reissuing their stuff, they reverted back to the old black/silver look, although I believe the grill cloth wasn't exactly the same.

I know its not a Fender for sure. I think Fender had a 215 in their "Pro" line that was pretty well copped from Sunn designs though.

I got a little help from the kind folks on the Sunn forum. I am going to try for a complete restore on this cab, from cleaning the tolex to replacing/ buffing the corners. Freshen the ol girl up a bit, ya know.

Anyway it turns out that this is a Sorado cab. I had the Sonaro head years ago(kicking myself for selling that one) which was a very similar head to the Sorado i believe. I never know there was a special cab for it.. Hopefully i can find the parts in need for it- rubber feet, input jack round plastic thingy, and casters. I have a box of casters but i am not sure if they will work for this purpose or not.

With any luck, a matching cab will fall into my lap and i will have completed my little wall of low end sound. .......for now anyway.

All of those 60 watt three knobbers are the same general amp. The way the heads got their name was based on the cab it came with. Apparently the Sorado came wth the 2x15. Sonaro was a 4x10.
