Practice recording of Trans-Dimensional Parasites. The fast part at the end may or may not have had something to do with our bassist quitting:
http://sandiaman.bandcamp.com/track/trans-dimensional-parasites
Crystalline creatures reverse through time's whirlpool & glide away
Slide away
Prismatic reduction halts their reproduction just for today
Ignored today
How long can we be safe
From the transparent race
How long can this go on?
How long will it go on?
Shadowless scourges whisper faint dirges to lull their prey
Fears allayed
Energy vampires, draining vast empires into decay
Soon our Doomsday
We don't have too long
Before they sing their song
How long can we go on?
How long will we go on?
Lurking between times, sucking our enzymes, they take control
Can we be whole?
Diminished, soon vanquished, a carbon-based banquet is our fate
Now it's too late
Can't you hear them sing
Keening and deafening
Dissolution through ignorance
Annihilation, our recompense
No more shall we go on
No more shall we go on
And now we're gone...

Dig that tune man, it's got some Monster Magnet feel to it 8)
thanks, dude. I'm putting that one and another tune out on 7" very soon.
Yeah that's some good shit Robert. Fuck yeah!!
Great song eyeprod. I love the band I play in, but I would hop on playing bass for a band that sounds like that in a second.
Thanks guys. It means a lot. Corey, people have told us that before, yet the perfect bass player is always elusive. The guy we had is now 5 hours away, so we only play shows with him once in awhile. Then sometimes as a duo, or with a stand-in.
I've been dragging ass on getting things rolling. Either recording all myself or getting folks together to help. This actually a just a "sketch" of the tune I did quite a while ago. Free time. Warts and all. The guitar is intentionally sparse to the point of basically suggesting "chords go here" and little more than that. Sorry but it aint stoner or even heavy
I really just want to get some feedback on if it sucks or not.

oops! I made it TOO private. Try now.
This is a song i recorded two weeks ago together with my pal on the bass.
We did it in one take without any edits.
^^^^^ Whoa, that's rad! Kinda sounds like Om and if you added some lead guitar it would sound like Sleep.
im sort of spamming the jam room band thread here, but legit: this IS the latest i made up and recorded.so.......
this is eyeprod's bass and drums. ive added the rhythm track to the project and have these vocals to initially just define phrasing, but i kind of like them now. so fucking dumb it's funny.

Yes it grew on me and i like it, but i can't get used to is since i know the song by heart without.
it was just a great rhythm to jam over for me. jam, as in wing it on the fly, ad lib..see what you get.
sry i thought you guys just hit record and go too. i thought it was great for that. ill jam over that thing more. i like it.
Yes we did hit record and went but it is a song with certain paterns.
jibbersish, I like what you did, even if it's really weird sounding. It sounds like a song. Pretty ethnic sounding too. almost an Amon Duul 2 flavor going on.
neighbor, that tune is mellow. sounds pretty good

The first riff after the feedback caught me totally by surprise, sounds cool as hell though. The bass is kind of overloading the recording when it first kicks in, but the song sounds good. SPAAAAAACEEEEEYYYYYY 8)

Thanks! That OR120 is used in tandem with an Acoustic amp for bass. We all collect gear together and use it with this project and other bands in the past. You are right about the sg, the tone is all the amp though. Just boosted with a clean boost pedal. My rig is in the "show your rig" thread

Yeah. Right now I just demo all the time as a way to remember song ideas and I usually end up leaving a bunch of blank verse space thinking there would be vocals at some point.
That's the one barrier I have with recording at home. Yelling into a mic to track vocals is difficult to do most of the time.

Amps. Matamp was purchased from Lippy on the 'ol stonerrock page. Cab on the left is my fave. 70s orange broken in.(http://img.tapatalk.com/42570415-98fb-ee41.jpg)
Thanks for the kind words! We still have the OR120. Our drummer owns it, he collects old cabs and leslies and hammonds and stuff too. I currently use a Matamp Gt120, and recorded with that and an old ampeg solid-state combo.
Hey Cursed, are you the old Curse Of Truth guy?
Nope. Im a different old guy, used to go by bromat79.
Seriously awesome stuff everyone, fallen i love the guitar tone there what did you use/how did you record that? :)
Thanks for bumping this thread. Reminds me I have to get motivated to finish a couple of songs I have in the beginning stages.
For demo recording I patch a A-D box in between my pedal board and amp. I use the amp only as a monitor to eliminate any latency during recording.
The recorded sound is just pure guitar and pedal board with a modeled Fender Twin.
The theory is that if there are keeper guitar tracks that I want recorded properly I can always run the dry recorded signal out through a reamp box and back into an amp in the studio that can be miced up properly at full volume.
Theres a lot of cool shit in this thread. Thought I'd post my bands as good as its going to get recordings in a practice studio as we felt we had to post something before anyone would book us for a show. Only 2 tracks up but any feedback welcome.

I wouldn't call it a "song" per say, but here is a quick jam that we had last time
Just started working on this yesterday with a friend of mine. We just finished messing with it a bit and writing the middle part. Going for a kind of Isis/Neurosis/Zozobra/Cave In style vibe. Heavy, but layered and kind of a spacey. Still a work in progress.

orion progression?
I don't think so, but it does have a similar interval in it. In reverse order I think, though. I think Orion goes up and this one goes down. I didn't write that riff though, the guitarist did and I don't think he's familiar with any Metallica. I grew up on them of course, but Master of Puppets is my least heard album from them (of the old stuff), Kill Em All and Ride The Lightning were my favorites. I haven't listened to either of those in a long time either though.

I like it. Bass too quiet in the mix but from what I could hear great tone and good drummer too. Kept waiting for a super heavy part to kick in. Made me antsy to push a bunch of amps into that jam room and lay down a big heavy distorted riff under that beat. Buy your guitar player a LSTR. ;)

zero's band sounds nice. that studio did good by you. ez2 hang out on your page for a while.
diddler, along with god's own fade-in profile, that was a really cool groove
moose, being a hawkwind addict, I really enjoyed how you placed the pieces of your space piece, and I felt certain "feels" that did remind me of hawkwind.
mutant-there is something for me to think about, how you do that solo thing. also gz on remembering that whole fucking song. very nice little show.

Thank you Corey Y! ;D
I lived in Salinas for a few months, I remember jamming in a barn there with some folks, back when I was singing/playing the Nirvana styled stuff.
I am just adjusting faders and EQs really and do not know basic mixing knowledge like how to adjust a compressor and stuff. The only software I used was reaper, ezmixII, ozone5, recabinet, DC8C compressor from Klanghelm, metal foundry, glissEQ, and the free reaper stuff: reaFIR and reaGate.
Kinda funny that you mention the headphones and EQ. I mixed most of it on my KRK rokit 6 pair with the KRK10sub that I toggle on to check bass levels. but I did the final 'mastering' with ozone 5 on my Audio Technica ATH-M50S headphones and gave the mix a 3DB boost in the highs over 2K, so I am thinking I overdid it. Ill keep that in mind to avoid drastic eq decisions like that in the future, thanks for the constructive criticism :)
Thanks bro!!! ;D ;D ;D

Biography
After a long five year slumber, the four Sleepers have awakened to once again witness the witnessing of the witnessor.
Oh thanks man, glad someone digs it.
Glad someone digs the band description as well, we're not very serious guys, so it's kind of just a bunch of random inside jokes that we found amusing. Palace is pretty much a freakshow.

I think the secret here is to put a cardioid mic about 2.5 inches away from the snare surface, on the rim furthest away from the high-hat. Gate that, so you just get the initial attack, and add it to the overhead mix.
Just kidding, it's a Zoom H2 with the input setting dialed down to zero (and they still pegged the meters). :o
i've been using an h1 at input volume 8, turned away from everything but the pa speakers (which are too quiet)....and once i figure out this soundcloud thing (which maybe doesn't let you upload from an ipad, which has become the computer i have most access to), maybe i'll post a comparison...i'm curious where lumpy pointed he mics..
Tiny rehearsal room, so we just picked a corner away from the drums and higher than the speakers of the bass amp (to get a room mix without too much proximity to any source, for sake of balance). I have a mic-stand mount that screws into the bottom of the Zoom, so that helps getting it into places. I should have tried to protect the mic more with fabric (coats) to dampen the sound, but didn't think of that until later (make a tent or a fort for the Zoom to hide in). The main issue is that when everything's going (drums and bass) the input meters on the Zoom were pegged, even with input sensitivity at zero. I turned the recording sample rate to max and that seemed to help give some leeway (because I expected the recording to be completely useless). My version of the Zoom doesn't have a Limiter, some of the newer ones do, I guess. That would have made a difference.
Just to make sure it's understood, the band is absurdly loud, like the Body or Zoroaster or something (I dunno) and they practice in a 9x11 room. Adverse conditions.
QuoteJust to make sure it's understood, the band is absurdly loud
Aw Lumpy. You say such nice things. :) The problem is that I built my kit for the purpose of pushing/cutting through two or more absurd guitar/bass rigs in small to mid-size venues with next to no drum mic's, not bedroom-sized rehearsal spaces. Laurie's bass rig is equally monstrous. In that room, it's overwhelming.

Yeah, much appreciation for the purchase, glad you dig it.
We've been hiatus-ing since mid-2011 but aboot a month ago we started jammin' together ag'in. (They've been playing as another incarnation). I switched to guitar and we have all nu-songs, so:

Also been hiatus-ing since around then too all the while writing loads of riffs n lyrics and jamming as a two peice, we finally hooked up with our drummer a couple of weeks ago, this is rough as its our first practise together in almost 2 years, we've got roughly an hour long album to record in August and we'll record a demo in a couple of months, good times :)

Whoa!
Thanks guys! we really are out for world domination and mind control through our instrumental jams. actually it's more like we'll play for anyone who wont ask, "so have you guys ever thought of getting a singer?". we know we play a minority genre of rock, and it's aaaaaaaall good. thanks for the kudos. just waiting on artwork for the new record before we get it up online.
My solo album is finally done! Waited on a guest guitar solo for quite some time. The newest track is Garden of Meat, featuring said solo.

Very nice. Digging the riff assault.
Can I ask you why you run solo/lone wolf? You're a talented dude that seemingly could lead a band of savages. Convenience? Lack of likeminded players nearby? Severe body odor? All the above?
Minus the body odor, pretty much. I've been embroiled in full time college for the past 4 yrs, in a town of 20K people hundreds of miles from any significant scene (unless I want to play bluegrass, which if you couldn't tell...nope). I think by that guest solo it's not boating to say I know some clearly talented motherfuckers, and he is but one member of a band called The Reptilians, with whom I have been friends for many years now, and they're are just one of a shitload of bands I know or have been in/affiliated with. I really have no shortage of riff and beat wizards at my fingertips.
That and it's just for fun. I'm so over "going somewhere" with music. Thanks for checking it out. Feel free to snag a download.
Man, that's some fuzzy-riff-o-rific music, mutantcolors! The drumming is pretty bad badass as well. My hat's off to your creativity and multi-skills.
Thank ye kindly sir. There's another rekkid I done drummed on at this site (label run by singer/rhythm guitarist of the same band The Reptilians.)
Free for the downloading. This is where I learned how to mix, by sitting in at almost every working minute of the recording process of this record.

Hey thanks. It's amazing what you can do when dealing with the bullshit of other musicians gets eliminated from the process.
I get way more done by myself than with any band I play with. I think I do too many side projects though, I use up all my motivation to get a complete solo project done. I'm trying to work on that though, I'd like to get a complete album done by myself this year. My attention span is too short most of time, I just record one off songs for whatever kind of sound is in my head at the moment, instead of staying focused. I also can't get the motivation to write lyrics and do vocals anymore, but that's a weak excuse, since there's plenty of instrumental music out there.
Here's the last thing I recorded, from last week. Testing out the new Dunwich preamp with a vintage RAT, on both guitar and bass. Just recorded direct, with cab impulses. Just a quick 5-10 minutes of messing around while playing with the pedals, decided to make a short song of it.
https://soundcloud.com/corey-y/2013-03-10-v2 (https://soundcloud.com/corey-y/2013-03-10-v2)
^^^Guitar sounds aight. Bass is thin. Sounds like you used nearly identical settings.
Yeah, I did use almost identical settings. Not much more time went into it than however long it took to play. If I was going to record it properly I'd do it A LOT differently. That preamp has a ton of low end for bass, but the RAT isn't the best showcase for that. Just kind of a "messin around" track I do in a few minutes at home all the time, but rarely post online usually.
Yeah I gotcha. I was just curious of that's just how that recording rig sounds or you simply didn't change the settings. I haven't gotten around to trying my rat with a bass yet. Kinda interested to hear that.
My experience is that it sounds a lot better with a clean blend, but it really depends on what you want to get out of it. For some sounds, especially when everything is in unison and there's not a lot of independent bass lines, a little less low end and lot more aggression work fine. I like my Fulltone OCD now for a similar aggressive distortion for bass, but with a lot more low end without using a blend. Here's a preview track from the new Mental Waste release, that I recorded with the same bass as that clip, with the RAT and a clean blend into my YBA-1, into an Ampeg 410HLF, with various mics and a DI track mixed.
https://soundcloud.com/corey-y/mental-waste-no-one (https://soundcloud.com/corey-y/mental-waste-no-one)
That's definitely better. :)
The secret ingredient is effort. Though still using very sparingly in the case of Mental Waste recordings lol.
I readily admit to being privileged in that my job entails running a full mixing console, so I have access to that outside of work. My mix quality would have been impossible to achieve without that.
Stereo panning? Not so much without a board.

These aren't songs, but some initial riffs I shat out for a project with some friends around the country. The goal is to eventually make the absolute heaviest music that can possibly be made – which is different for everyone. But for me, it's akin to the Melvins at halfspeed buttfucked into Buried at Sea, playing Furry Lewis on a marijuana overdose.

heh chile, I really like that shit kickin stuff. that right there could sell me off of working on a psych trance type project.
hell ya! heh
you know what sucks tho? I am having trouble scrutinizing the mix. the song keeps getting in the way. boring songs are better for studying the mix, no distractions.
in a way, maybe that IS the holy grail....never a thought about the mix whilst listening idk....
maybe I need to listen to hawkbutt ( AND the real hawkwind) some more to get straightened out again, but damn, I want to have fun too.
Hate to say it, but Jackyl has fun. I would put those guys live against any other band fro just having a good time. Also J James has never forgotten about the fans and it shows.
Thanks for the kind words Jiberish! I'll take a compliment on the song itself over the mix any old day of the week. Cheers!

jake made some nice tapestries too.
Thanks guys :)
Really wanna listen to racers track but I can only seem to access soundcloud through direct links on this phone...
I wasn't kidding when I said rx's song spoke to me. so I pushed my rig to the limit and re-recorded his original track. I then put it into reaper and tripled it. I slightly delayed one track and put some verb on the third. it sounds big. I haven't cleaned anyting up yet. this is for jumz to hear, then I will pull it
the wildest thing happened while I was looping the song to listen to the mix: the bass line played itself in my head. I shit you not. I could not figure the notes out fast enough so I wouldn't forget, especially the bridge. that whole tra la la thing played by itself and ended on f sharp in my head. don't be mad rx, i'm trying to respect your song.

cool.
I really like walking notes in songs. they define a whole string of chords, well "imply".
stairway to heaven, hangar 18, hotel cali outro, tons of songs.
so I leave that up for a day or two yet, then remove it to actually record a polished bass line and maybe other enhancements. everything I have played with sounds cheesy, so far, besides that bassline.

yeah, sounds good as a start but needs some work. I've been doing some of that myself with my new project. Seven practices in and we're doing ok. It's drug music of a psych rock variety. I have a couple of doom themes going on lyrically, but the music sounds nothing like "doom". Here's a sampling of the latest recordings that turned out acceptably.
[cloudset]https://soundcloud.com/robert-tripp-1/sets/cv[/cloudset]
Last week I jammed with a dude from work and he brought his buddy to play bass. I decided to record for the hell of it and wound up getting a few decent bits. It's not stoner rock, but its improv funky rock to an Afroman riff. So close enough, someone here might dig it.

We're calling it Lincoln Hawk – Sly's character, if you're unfamiliar (and hate freedom & the troops).
Here's a short preview of some of rough ideas put down on tape. Still a long, looooooong way to go.
PS - Apparently there is/was a fake band called Lincoln Hawk used in the show Gossip Girl, but fuck that noise. Imma gonna use it anyways.
That's awesome Jake! awesome choice of film too! would you keep the film audio or maybe phase it in and out like intro samples?
Iv always wanted to write a soundtrack to Zombie Flesh Eaters and perform it live as a one off, need to dedicate a few weeks to it sometime, I started writing one for Wherewolves on Wheels too but I'm not sure I want to finish it. My latest idea is to make a short film out of brutal/horrible nature scenes like snakes invading chicks nests, wolves taking down deer and rotting animal corpses etc and make an ambient/emotional/horrible black metal soundtrack to it with the idea of it being a really uncomfortable but enlightening experience, ahhh ideas....
Part of a song we jammed in our practice space to be recorded on a new album (our first since 2008) to be recorded sometime in the next year...
Lots of good stuff here. Widget, I look forward to another Madking Ludwig release.
hey widget, you stranger, take off. definitely stop by more often with samples of what you are brewing.

There are certain loose sections where changes are left up to the member who leads the part, but it's fairly well planned out.
A co-worker and I jammed again with the mics up. We noodled around to that Sail song by Awolnation, then I added some bass overtop after. Got them half time shuffles going.

Thanks, hopefully we get it finished soon. I'm swamped with other recording projects in various states of progress at the moment. I'm really glad we spent a lot of time working on our tones in practice, it's made recording really easy in that aspect. The guitar and bass tracks are completely unmixed in that teaser, just raw scratch tracks of the tones we use while practicing with a single mic on each.

Thanks, glad you dig the demos man. I'm way into the pedal, I got it for guitar but I was actually really impressed with how good it sounded on bass too. Nick from Dunwich is knocking it out of the park with the stuff he's releasing. I'm looking forward to getting the pedal tourbox, I'm going to be making in depth demos for everything in it. I wrote a short song last night, as a demo for the new Dunwich Cthulhu Fuzz. I went for a sort of Fu Manchu inspired feel, since it's got a Fuzz Face type tone. Put the pedal on both guitars and the bass track. I even tried a little guitar solo with wah, but I'm not a very good lead guitar player, so I just did a quick take and left it. I haven't been playing music lately and I just got my music/mixing room all bac together and upgraded at home, so it was a fun thing to do for an evening.

If you like the Fuzz Face tone, it's just a top shelf version of that. Although so far it works a lot better with bass than any other Fuzz Face style pedal I've played. I'm still planning on doing some more straight forward and in depth demos with several basses for it. I used a Stingray for that song, still haven't tried it with a passive bass yet. I have the Wizard and Cthulhu from Dunwich so far and I've been really impressed by how well Nick's pedal designs work with bass. I love fuzz on bass, but I've had a lot of frustration with finding fuzzes that really work well with it in the past. To my taste at least.
That's good to know while I'm thinking of picking up bass again!

cool Cthulhu fuzz demo! what amps?
Thanks, the signal chain for the instruments was...
Guitar: Carvin Bolt Plus (B tuning) > Cthulhu Fuzz > Carvin X100B (clean "rhythm" channel) > Celestion 65 loaded 2x12. Just changed the volume knob level and pickup selection for different tracks.
Bass: Sterling By Music Man Ray34CA (B tuning) > Cthulhu Fuzz > Gallien-Krueger MB800 > Eminence Basslite loaded 1x10.
Both recorded with a Shure SM7B.
That's what I have setup in my music/mixing room at home now. Those two little rigs, with a shelf above for all my pedals (well not all, they don't all fit actually), specifically for being able to do demos and quick writing without having to setup and break down everything each time. Working out well so far, I just have to move the mic into place and hit record now.
cool brutha, nice setup!!!
I think that Gallien-Krueger MB800 is really awesome, a bass amp that only weighs 5 pounds and sounds mega huge!

The only reason I bought that amp was that I loved my 800RB, but wanted something a little louder and lighter as a backup to my bigger amps. So I sold the 800RB and bought the MB800 and it was a freakin revelation, one of the best amps I've ever owned and now I use it pretty much all the time. Great tone, super loud, weighs 5 lbs and fits in the pocket of my bass gig bag.
Did another quick demo clip for the Dunwich Cthulhu fuzz. This time with a slower doom vibe, just to kind of show off a different presentation of the tone. Intro is just volume knobs rolled down on the instruments, used a Precision for bass this time.

Hey guys, just finished mixing I recorded last weekend, I used the Amplitube "big pig" pedal modeled after the EHX Big Muff pedal. I think it is cool, but not all there. What do you think?
Here is my new "desert rock" fuzz rock tune:
[SOUNDCLOUD]https://soundcloud.com/earthalliance/where-is-there-you-are2[/SOUNDCLOUD]
Any comments or constructive criticism is appreciated, I am always trying to make better mixes and am practicing guitar/bass. Cheers :)
I like it, heavy and groovy, but the jangly guitar parts that sort of float in the background give it an off kilter feel that's cool. The guitar solo towards the end is a little high/dry in the mix, kind of pops way out, but that's a minor criticism. The guitar leads in the songs you've been posting sound simple but really good, I'm jealous. I'm rubbish with guitar leads.
cool, thanks brutha! I appreciate the feedback on the volumes of the guitar solo, I fixed it, cheers :) Three months ago I bought a fretlight new on ebay for $250 and worked on my blues scale patterns so I think that helped me, I dig learning on my fretlight guitar.

This is a cover of Hawkwind's Spiral Galaxy 28948 from Warrior On The Edge Of Time.
The synth intro of the original track is already doomy so the song lent itself to a cover. I rewrote the main section in a the heavier style of another band, added some space noises and an electric violin inspired solo. It's a bit messy but I had fun playing and recording it.

This sounds awesome man! I blasted it at high volume through my mixing monitors a few times.
that is seriously awesome fallen! It sounds like if Yob or some black metal band did the cover! ;)
We recorded for a split today, here's one of the tracks, a cover of Procreation of the Wicked, we ran out of time to record the vocals or leads so will do them this week, this version is with two SM58's sitting high up in the corners of the room. We also have a fully mic'd up version on our friend Daves laptop and another which was recorded with a tiny mic in the middle of the room onto a minidisc player which sounds BRUTAL! Think we're gonna do a weird mix of all three. A piece of the ceiling actually fell off while we were playing!
[soundcloud]https://soundcloud.com/blackdestrier/procreation-unfinished[/soundcloud]
Thanks guys! I thought it was a bit more first album HoF but comparing anything I do to YOB makes my day. ;)
We just put up the new Mental Waste release the other day. Recorded in 2012 actually, we were sitting on it to do a split vinyl release with another band, but it's taking so long we decided to just release it on Bandcamp already. Hopefully the split still happens eventually though.

This is my new band called, CV. Home recordings. Currently working on something more serious, analog and more trashy sounding. We've got a guy with an old 4track tape deck handling it. Sounds pretty cool so far, but still in progress. It's noisy psych garagey kind of stuff. Someone, I don't know who but I read it online, described us as mad max rock. It fits, somehow. Maybe because I dress up like the feral kid sometimes? anyway, it's not stoner rock nor doom. I'm kinda over that stuff right now.

loving mental waste!
CV is awesome too, it reminds me a little of Nebula, Naam, Hawkwind, nice home recording! looking forward to hearing that old 4 track tape deck recording, I want to do some stuff with tape decks too...

"Verse I
Long before eternity
Immortal lives dark deities
In the age of wind behemoths rise
Earth below personified
- Guitar Lead Break -
Verse II
Shaman invokes the sacred power
Heavens raged primeval war
Horns immersed in crimson rage
Gypsum faces destroy their Gods
Chorus
Favored by wicked women
Fallen lords of night
Reach for your divine powers
Your sacrifice
Overthrown by Gods of new
War of AEsir
Forgotten rituals
Your Sabbath is dead
Verse III
Died three times and three times reborn
Eternal sleep immersed once more
Humanity from their burning corpse
On the lifeblood of fated men.
Chorus
Favored by wicked women
Fallen lords of night
Reach for your divine powers
Your sacrifice
Overthrown by Gods of new
War of AEsir
Forgotten rituals
Sabbath is dead"

Thanks, all the people who dig my stuff are always across country lol. I've got standing offers galore, if I ever most to new england.
I revised it a little bit, with some better drums. Well, drums the fit more with what I wanted. I wrote the riffs to a click and just pasted drums under it.
[soundcloud]https://soundcloud.com/corey-y/2013-11-29-version-2[/soundcloud]
All the drum programming stuff I have done, I just air guitared or grabbed the acoustic and filled in the midi to go with. Once the skeleton of the song is complete you can record riffs along to the drums. Then it's real easy to mix it down rough, listen back and write some meaningful fills and details that relate to the music into the drum parts.
...since anyone asked.
I wrote and recorded another new tune tonight. Going to try to keep up the momentum and write a new song every day this next week...or as often as I can get a few free hours to myself.
[soundcloud]https://soundcloud.com/corey-y/2013-11-30-instrumental-demo[/soundcloud]
Another new one, cloggin this thread up while I'm off work for a week. I'm spending progressively more time fine tuning the drum tracks with each one of these. Definitely know how, I just get lazy wanting to pump out some new riffs sometimes. All these are definitely rough first draft type demos. Once I get a pile of them together, going to try to work out vocals and then redo all of them with some more time put into it.
[soundcloud]https://soundcloud.com/corey-y/2013-12-01-instrumental-demo[/soundcloud]

Got inspired by your productivity and pieced this one out bit by bit after work this week. Still rough but close enough.
Edit: updated this one with a cleaner mix and a bass track added.

Thanks man, glad to be of inspiration. I need to inspire myself to be more productive too and do some vocals for those songs. Tunes are sounding good, I reaaaaally like the second one. From the part where the slide guitar kicks in to the end is just killer.

Thanks for the positive words. I am digging the slower one you posted... wish our SC player in here would post as the one that shows the cover art and song titles...
I think what I need to learn is that sometimes I fight a song for a while, and sometimes they just flow out. And the ones that flow usually turn out WAY better.

I get the same way. That's why I haven't posted any songs since those 3. I've sat down and started writing stuff 3 or 4 times, but mostly I ended up fighting myself and getting frustrated, not happy with the way anything was turning out. On a good song I might end up messing around with the drum sequencing for a couple hours afterwards, just trying to dial things in and refine it. When I start doing that at the beginning of the process, it almost always doesn't come together, because it means I don't have a clear idea of what I want to do. I'll put a lot of work into songs once I get the ideas out there, but the initial ideas usually have to flow out pretty effortlessly before that's productive for me. I definitely have musical ADD though, it's hard for me to keep my focus on one idea for long periods of time. I'll get a few songs out and then want to do something a little different. It's easier to stay on track in a group, by myself I'm held hostage by my own whims lol.
You guys are putting some inspirational stuff out there, thanks for the tunes. I'll try to upload a recording from the band's next rehearsal, it's starting to sound pretty sweet ;D

My settings are stupid simple. NMV channel on my guitar amp, all EQ knobs to noon. All knobs at noon on the RAT, gain and volume maxed on the Pharaoh in GE mode with tone knobs at noon, Meathead adjusted to match volume on the Pharaoh. Bass tone is a little more subtle, but not much.
I get so many "you need to move here so we can jam!" offers from people who are NOT in California.
I'm down for online collaborations. I can't play lead guitar for shit and I haven't written lyrics in years. I can still do vocals...I think. It's been a while.

Finally finished re-working an old track I recorded years ago. I never could figure out how to create the drum effect (in retrospect it was 'gated reverb' instead of 'reverse noise gate'), so I pulled the old drum track off my Roland VS-2400, and even the old guitar tracks. Added some synth parts, threw a kick drum from BFD under the old drum track to give it a little more 'umph', EQ'd and re-mixed, and that was it.
This whole thing started when I was just fucking with the drum track back in the day. Wasn't going for this industrial/weird drum sound, but as soon as I heard the effect, the whole thing took off in its own direction.

the Spanish jam. great fun.
I wish this bunch was more spontaneous. like someone starts a : make a song up but it has to be a polka. , or a Spanish jam, or a 30sec punk mini song or anything that pushes people around a little to someplace new. but everyone take a shot. but have some specific guidelines to focus everyone somewhat the same.
think of the different perspectives that would appear due to everyone's different backgrounds and musical thinking. and no big productions, quick pattern some rhythm or wtf it needs and done. 3 good ole boys can play bluegrass on their back porch. reaper can do 3 tracks heh.
or everyone has to use brass somehow, or a 2 part finger pick guitar thing but you have to use a bass..idk, heh...the fun could be endless
even reaper games, like some set of samples to be butchered and put into the DAW ..heh matt pike muahaaahaaaa
you know what I mean.
edit: did you link that song in some form once before? seems familiar like I was thinking how awesome creepy you had going..this is reminding me again. but damn I listen to so much of y'alls music I get screwed up sometimes. edit2: this was about BA's song. I don't say that clearly heh. the Spanish jam is not creepy and I haven't heard it before .
I like that idea and am down. I don't post most the stuff I do because it's far removed from stoner rock and most people seem to not get much out of the borderline stuff I post now haha.
nice. believe me, I have been bumming people out with my non-doom-monkeyshines forever. i'm too ADD to lock into one style.
I want to take a whack at anything that catches my interest.
we could put together a more organized Spanish song too maybe. I have a whole box worked out for my Spanish/snake charm shit. I found if I shifted it up 2 steps, it goes right with your jam. it feels f# or b-ish heh. but whatever it is, I was jamming to your jam once I locked in.
like for starters, may I request that you just put up the bass/drum parts of your Spanish jam. I would like to jam and maybe riff some, then put it back up for you to further mangle. eyeprod is good for random rhythms too.
and seriously, think of some crazy little music goal like if it was for the "RPS challenge mini crazy song" contest (RPS = really possessed stoners)
i'll let you suggest the first mini song goal if you would like. i kind of want a surprise. i bet if danny wasn't so busy he would take a shot at the song requirements.
my suggestion would be a 30sec punk song, sort of to get everyone started on reasonably familiar ground.
maybe start a thread for each new song idea so it can hang around for a bit and keep its identity
i enjoy mangling covers of , well anything unfortunate enough to catch my attention, so bring it on. it would still be awesome if a bunch of people took a shot.
I think I can tackle most any genre at this point.

As for writing music one of the best realizations is this:
You are not the creator, music exists in and of itself. Be the instrument and let music play you. When you try to be in control of it, that's where the struggle comes in.
This has helped me thru 5 years of the RPM Challenge.
When I stopped 'trying' to do anything in particular and just went with whatever ideas presented themselves, regardless of genre or style, suddenly the floodgates were opened and the albums and songs just wrote themselves.
That, and weed helps too.
Sent from a can on some string using Tapatalk (http://tapatalk.com/m?id=1)
I hear exactly what you are saying chief. all my songs come in a flash of lightening. the work is massaging the rough edges out and completing them.
so you don't think specific little songs would be so good? I figure that being forced out of your comfort zone would be fun, a little confusing but ultimately I don't know...heh shit
for example, I was going to start a thread, which I probably will still do, and call it game song project 1.
rules: 15-30 sec punk tune.
you can use your own voice for vocals
you can use one non-official object as a drum/percussion..drum sticks not allowed either.
you have to play the music on one string of any instrument you choose
GO...
so in the shower, tweak the hot water off and on one time, and remember what you said when you swore at the cold blast, there's the words heh...idk, I want to go crazy new places, but if kept simple, wont be an epic chore
what happens when it comes time to write a Bolero? might have to look up wtf one of those even is. then you "ahhhhhhh" granddaddy trance tune made for screwing. fuckin a

I wanna share the first release of my band.
album out later in the year.
Some excellent shit going on here.
I'm almost sure that I posted my new track here... maybe I was too sleepy or mods removed it because it sucked :D
Here's the newest (final) version - boring as fuck but I like it.
And of course YT fucked up the cover and it's very light. And it shouldn't be :/
I look forward to when I finally have an entire fucking day where I can sit down and check out each and every one of these links.
The reviews on each others' tracks alone is proof enough I am missing out on some really awesome stuff!

awesome live music! super heavy guitar tones there, amazing stuff. great guitarwork there.
I agree with this too and just want to expand on this in that I will continue to practice and experiment and push myself into other realms and then let the ideas flow from there. I just ordered a bunch of fretlight blues licks instruction videos and guitarpro6 for fretlight so I am excited for the next year of learing exploration :)

Thanks :-)
I think I have next song ready but I must listen to it several times before posting.

cool dude! I bet you got to record in the studio, and someone mixes/masters?
I saw the red fang show last month with their all solid state backline, their recordings and live show was cool.
You have some killer chops dude, great songwriting.
No sir, I did all my own recording at home and mixed at the console at work (I was production director for the student radio station before I left for Thailand.)
100% me on those studio recordings. It probably helps that my office there used to be Terry Date's. He showed up one day at random and told me so.
edit - I should clarify, that was Raw Meat Salvation only. Fried Egg was a total live mix; We (it was a collaboration, not solo work) did ALL the mixing in my jam room via amp adjustments and mic placement. Absolutely zero post production, all done with a handheld Tascam, two room condensers and the magic touch.
cool! Thanks, I was curious about that :)

Nice tune Jake. The way I see severe downtuning isn't so much a way to just be low low low, but as an expansion of the usable fretboard. Let's say you play in E all the time. Tune to A, and then keep playing in E. You just traded out the 17th+ frets that you hardly touch anyway, for 0-5 of all new notes that you will use the shit out of.
Plus playing heavy power chord riffs that originated around the standard positions more up around the 10-15th positions sounds thick as fuck.
Very rough sketch (w/ rougher vocals) of an acoustic ballad dirge I wrote:

^pretty interesting. I like when you git it with the filter at the 8min mark for a while. definitely some nasty stuff.
definitely sounds like relaxed fun.
am I nuts, or was I hearing something like pavane for a dead princess by ravel playing in the background like up to the 8 min mark?
edit: I found it. too much crap open on my pc. it was here. however. a couple of places I was thinking that u should mix that higher because it sounded cool. then I was thinking "HEY wait a minute, I thought the lumpmeister said he couldn't play keys and he's tearing it up." heh
editz: ps, there are a ton of gaia patches to emulate basically any old tune with famous synth in it.
really love your song racer :)
Wow, thanks! I've been writing quite a bit of material in that vein lately. Lyrics have been flowing pretty strong.
Once I get a sketch of Dust Devils, I'll post that. Similar mood & approach.
We're demoing some songs before we record properly just to practice recording live and to get a frank assessment of where things are at. Here's a new track that I think still needs some small tweaks song-wise, but is pretty solid. What do you guys think?

That was really cool, man. Totally dug it.
Thanks fellas. Anyone have any suggestions of things to change or do differently? I for one am not a big fan of the vocal timing/phrasing in the chorus. I also wonder if a third repetition after the spacey part is overkill...maybe stop it after the verse instead of doing the chorus once more? Regardless, thanks for the kind remarks.
That's a cool track.
The only thing I'd fix is in the beginning where it transitions from the super loose intro into where the drums kick in. Would be cool if everyone came in at once super tight on the 1 with that head banging rhythm that you lock into a little later.
The contrast between loose and spacey and then suddenly tight and headbanging would be really fun to see live.
See if this works.

Solid start. I'd like to hear a variation on the chords, find another place for them on the fret board or something, that's just my ear and my bag of tricks talking.
That's always good to do. I'm only going to be able to work on this for 14 of the 28 days of feb, so I need to hustle! \m/,

Sounds really good overall, strong song. With a little polish on the mix that could probably be an album cut actually. I'm sure if this were something I was producing/engineering I could dig in, tear it apart and find the places it needed to be tweaked a bit, but my snap impression of it is really solid and positive. Good work man.
This is actually at least 5 years old. I think it was the first thing I recorded when I made the switch from my shitty Boss drum machine to BFD software. It's really an unfinished idea, like almost everything I recorded back then was. But it's one of the better-produced things I've ever done in my limited ability, even if it's boring.

Rougly edit from a jam from last rehearsal. It's screaming for synths though (our synth guy has been busy at work)
here's an improvised jam we did last week with a couple of guests/friends sitting in. Been doing a lot of jamming lately. working on new ideas in the same vein as what we're already doing, you know. I started this jam, and you might notice that the riff is a direct ripoff of, Kill Ugly Naked by the Obsessed. It's a great riff.....It just came out of me, though I doubt any of the others had any idea of it, I was well aware and almost tried to move to the chorus a couple of times, but since playing bass I am trying hard to hold it down rather than introduce changes, especially changes that I might fuck up.
http://cvxl.bandcamp.com/track/bonus-improvisation-3-18-2014
edit: forgot to add, for those that follow the key/synth thread that the synth on all of these tracks on our bandcamp page is pure minibrute with a bit of kaosscillator here and there.

I think it is the best way to go. and to put music on spotify too. I mean if the goal is to get people to go to the show, why not? I know bandcamp sells a lot but for smaller bands I doubt much $ is generated; people just dont buy music that much any more. I dig the Iota songs on Spotify :)
'Bout muhfukn time, Taylor! Sound pretty great, as usual.
Working on a little basement demo with a yet-to-be-named project that I'm involved in. I've only got two not so great microphones, so it's the best I could do recording the drums. I think once it's EQ'ed and mastered, it'll hopefully help bring out some luster where it's lacking. We'll see.

I'm actually pleasantly with how many people actually paid for our record yesterday. A few people paid like 90s style CD prices...and they weren't even friends or family members -- it was kinda strange since we're an unknown band.
That being said, I just want people to hear it and then come out and support us when we play.

Post details of your synth rig in the synth thread dude. Love to know what you;re using. Is it all software or do you have some hardware? Sounds like software to me.
Me Joe and our Buddy Mike did this a couple days ago. We recorded into a Korg 1200. Guitars and drums were recorded live then I laid down the vocals I just made freestyled it and made them up as I went a long, and then Mike did the Harmonies. It's the first thing I've sung on in a long time and it's the first thing I've done completely finger style too!

lol Sauron Osbourne....
in other news, my band (working band name is "Holy Snakes" - subject to change) recorded this a couple of months ago right after we kinda framed it up. Still working on the timing at that point so there are a couple of minor stumbles where Nik and I don't quite come in at the same time, but even with those little mess-ups, I think it's pretty good.

Surprisingly, there doesn't seem to be a band called Holy Snakes yet (?) except for some inept teenagers on Youtube. (There was a band called Holy Love Snakes though, in the 90s)

I have the VTBass too which sounds great through my Gallien ultralight bass combo 212 I used at a jam last week. I bet you could put some pedals in front of the British and it would sound really close to the Oxford, cheers 8)

Thanks, Jake; I really enjoy creating & playing this sort of material.

I love how this sounds especially what you've done with the vocals...
I was just catching up on this thread again. spook kicks ass in his tune for sure heh. nice wah-work. that could be polished up into a real slick tune.
I also like more eclectic mental shit. whatever racerx is cooking, smells intruiging.
but as of now caravan sabbatical is winning. nice touch of fusion or something in your Sabbath worship. also, I realize what having a very competent bassline going can do for a song. that really put the sparkle in that bitch. I believe I would pay a cover to see your band if the whole deal was of this ilk, maybe even kill some pbr pounders[and 4 pre-emptive advils haha]
if everdrone and corey ever got together, I think they would dominate.
so I painted an audio picture. just LP-pharaoh-shit behringer delay/verb honestly don't know. spun the dial until I liked the sound haha.
it is set on a background thunderstorm ambient track which I put together from samples online
so picture little boat goes out on creepy night, something is wrong, boat gets chased, calm spot for tension "they're baaaack" boat gets trashed by squid. boat pieces sink like twinkling stars into the abyss. only the rain is left. play it loud if anyone cares to sail with me haha arrrrrgh may-teeee

Got this rough mix in progress back today and threw some rhythm and leads on it, it's like a production nightmare hehe, it's a little sloppier in places than I'd like, still waiting on the second track, we recorded all day in a very hot room with the sun blaring in getting drunker by the minute, it was a good day :)

This is using for rhythym guitars EMG81 and Revalver, epiphone SG standard, check it out if you dont mind modern rock/metal:

Im on a roll! Today I recorded this one with my new Revalver 3.5 modeling of the Peavey 6505+ amplifiers for the rhythm guitar tracks, and for the guitar solo and bass I use the toontrack ezmix presets. Revalver takes a bit of tweaking but it is worth it! using for all guitars both the EMG81 and EMG 85. This is some metal that has a bit more 'thrash' than I usually play with a fingertapping guitarsolo, check it:

lol definitely epic slow Doom stuff! I hear some great tones and delays in there as well. I wish that it wasn't clipping so much, maybe kinda box off the mic or somehow turn the mic clipping limiter down
That first track sounds excellent drone it sounds like Hooded Menace actually! I can hear those zombie vocals about to kick in! The second track is awesome, sounds really death metal to me!
Yeah the clipping is the first thing I asked to get rid of! I think he left it there on purpose because we're so loud in the studio I think he likes to push that on the recordings, its the same guy who mixed this Celtic Frost cover for us, this was the final and much more toned down version I asked for, he'd actually sent a really extreme version which was so pushed to the limits it was terrifying! I like recording/mixing with him as he comes up with ideas and pushes boundaries which I wouldn't take as far as he does, he keeps me on my toes! We have a much better version this morning! Although he's sent another song also with so much effects on the vocals that John sounds exactly like a Dalek heh...
just as constructive criticism (as always take with a grain of salt, my personal opinion)
Im glad your happy with him, I have never heard that much clipping before from a professional in a studio that charges people money for his work though. How much does he charge?
I would ask him to stop all that clipping as well (like you did) and I would just pay someone else or just record stuff myself, I think the clipping really detracts from the music and tones, I mean its way more clipping than that metallica album a few years back that everyone was down on. That said, a few say my recordings have too much compression/clipping in them as well and I prolly should save up to get some lessons on how to mix better.
Oh don't worry drone it was done in our practise room and we just paid a little for their time! ;) Its two friends of ours, the newer clip free version sounds much better it's the kind of song that can't cope with distractions like that as you say. I don't mind things being so pushed on faster messier songs like the frost cover or the amebix cover we've just done. I like having fun with these recordings we do for split tapes as I feel like it lets off steam between albums where things are much more controlled :)
Those new clips sound great everdrone, I wish I could solo like that. I'm garbage on guitar solos lol.
Now that I have wifi again I look forward to taking an afternoon and listening to every single one of these links \m/,

I've thought about trying out fretlight to learn soloing. Normally I don't really care, since I don't typically write a lot of music that revolves around guitar solos. It has come up a few times and I wish I could have handled it easily. In general the older I get the more I just want to be able to do everything myself musically and not have to rely on other people. That way I don't have projects sitting around for months or longer waiting on other people to be finished.
you 2 guys were meant to collaborate ijs.
did you get that fretlight because orianthi told you to? heh
if anyone needs some ambience between black metal sets, here is 5 minutes of something you could hear like at king diamond or cradle of filth shows between bands. it was a wank, but it actually uses bach-like chord progressions, and it came out really intense. gothic and dark cathedral organ/choir/and something else on the bottom heh. y'all are welcome to it.
and if anyone needs gothic filler like this for a certain amount of time. I could extend and organize this concept even further. just a thought. it can also be altered to more space creepy or melancholy like debussey's incredible sadness, or lots of ambient feels pertaining to the bandlist
fantasy and fudge in c minor, in 3 movements
[soundcloud]http://soundcloud.com/doktordeath/fantasyandfudgeincminor1amp[/soundcloud]
[ all creepy chords were employed.
it is just a 1 take fake, but velocity sensitivity and layering make it sound multitrack. korg x-50 is one badass toy. only thing used.]

Here's 10 minutes of improv from yesterday. A new synth/noise project I'm doing with a guitar player. Thanks a bunch I put a ton of work in on it and learned a ton about mixing and mastering. Those three songs are a good indicator of the rest of the material but the best two songs are not on there. The art I'm using there is from a Japanese woodblock painting looks badass. The artwork is going to get weirder my sister is a pretty talented artist and she always wanted to get into doing band artwork and shes doing this surrealist painting for the cover. Releasing it as about a 40 minute album roughly Oct 1st.
BTW I haven't seen anyone here really talking about it but you guys need to start using LANDR to save yourself a lot of money. It's an auto-mastering algorithm that is surprisingly musical. Try it you guys will be shocked at how good it sounds I used it on my stuff. Just make sure you leave 4-5db on anything you upload to give it room to work.

Finished and released my solo album. Annoyingly I bought a Wampler Slostortion near the end of recording and it sounds pretty sweet wish I bought it earlier. Only got to use it on the 5th and 7th tracks. Guitars were Agile Septor 827, MTD KZ 4 with Nordstrand Big Singles, and my Zon Concorde into a combination of T21 Oxford and Leeds with varying distortion pedals (Boss HM-2 MIJ, Boss ML-2, Tech 21 Bass XXL) and some Line 6 Podfarm 2.0. I used Stillwell and Tonebooster plugins for mixing and LANDR for mastering. I also used a Boss PH-3 phaser and a ZVex Sonar a bit on the last track... I'm surprised I never see anyone ever really use these they sound really nice. Enjoy.
My sister did this artwork if anyone likes it and needs art done let me know she is always looking for sidework and is reasonably priced and works very fast.

I attempted to sort of "speed write" a song with improvising tonight. Recorded really quickly, in between putting things in and out of the oven while cooking dinner. I picked a tempo and a few drum beats, improvised on bass and then swapped everything around in different orders to find a cool arrangement. I went back and punched in a couple little riffs to transition, that's it. Not really a finished song, it's just drums and bass, but just kind of a quick experiment. Only about a half hour put into the whole thing collectively. If anyone is interested in recording some guitar tracks for it, I'd be down to collaborate for fun.

I spent the day listening to crap music that VH1 is about unleash on the world. I needed to know that the underground is still alive and well.
RacerX - Black N Blues - nice work, love the room tone. It makes it more bluesy. Glass slide?
Dinx - Oct 26 post: I don't think the bass is too loud and you have got some sophisticated arrangement ideas. Real drums are always better but these are not bad.
Oct 31st post - you really do have an ear for arrangements.

liquidsmoke: I concur—very good stuff.
And now, since you have found the tone you've been questing for, maybe you can cut down on the annoying questions? ;)

Room is tiny and wedge spaced but back wall is very disrupted with bar, and a half box thing that looks into the bar below, and doorways. Mics were up high which lost a lot of mid from the bass, but plenty from guitar due to up facing speaker on my Trace cab. Guitarist has no wah, loads of other pedals though, plus Orange is baxandall tone stack so middly inclined.
quite the unintentional effect. it sounds like a big room even after listening to some of that clip again. wild.

Here's some more of my recent living room sessions. All improv jamming. This is my newest band accompanied by a couple that plays in a local freaky jazzrockweirdo band that I really like called, the Tweeners. Great people and awesome noisemakers. I like to invite different friends over to jam and see what happens, but the new band is so satisfying that I've been afraid of breaking the spell that we've crafted. These recordings are from about an hour into it...we usually hang out for 3-4 hours and jam in my living room. I think that you can hear when something starts to click and it starts transcending the "bash fest" that usually occurs when you get a group of rock people together with large amps and a drum kit and they attempt to jam. haha, I guess it means that sometimes it's good and other times it's shit, at least in my opinion.
Jamming with other people is very liberating, so you really have to allow people to feel it out and probably they'll be mostly out of control, particularly guests. Sometimes I end up trying coax some cohesion out of it via a little conversation, but I enjoy it much more when good music happens with little or no speaking involved.

Here's a track from the upcoming Palace In Thunderland album. It's not mastered yet. I posted it today because it's about all the people from these boards and Stonerrock.com that we lost over the years. I put it up in GD, I figured I will share here as well.
Enjoy!

I liked it. Thats a really well mixed/recorded song everything is balanced nicely. When does your Palace In Thunderland album come out I've heard some other stuff you've posted and sounds pretty promising.
Thank you, we worked really, really hard on this record. We recorded it all ourselves, I basically "produced", and Justin Pizzoferrato mixed. He's amazing. The record will come out on April 21st. It's getting mastered now, and it's sounding even better. I'm glad that you're digging it.
Racer just been chillin out to your song, made me feel very tranquil, love it :)
khoomz that is pure filth haha, and a weird riff indeed!
Andy I loved your song too, made me feel very emotional, its beautiful...
Dinx I really like your tracks too!

I'll post this in here too. Here's the track I'm going to be using to promote the new Palace In Thunderland album. It's called "Troglodytes."
I'm going to make a video for it using clips from the animated movie "Fantastic Planet." It takes awhile, I should have it done in a couple of weeks.
Anyways, y'all are cool and have been supportive, so I wanted to share it on these boards first.

This one is a kind of a doom meets S.O.D thing.

Not a whole song, more like two riffs put together. It's recorded in Amplitube on my Ipad. Not to shabby sounding imo but the drums sound a bit funny yes. But easy to work with though.
cool stuff Andrew!
I got this one I recorded last month, but I made some how-to type music videos for it too so guitarist/bassist can play it if they want:

Hey everdrone, thanks!
That vid was quite cool. I doesn't have to be difficult! Great riffing!
Don't know what happend but I got some spare time this morning. So a couple of more riffs and a solo. Kind of Uncle Acidish I guess.
[soundcloud]https://soundcloud.com/andersriffarriff/three2[/soundcloud]
nice man! I dig uncle acid stuff too. mind control. I have amplitube and use it as well, I like their big muff model, I am suprised how good it sounds compared to all other digital fuzz modelingz :)
here is the video of this song in last nights band practice that I posted in this thread a few days back:
I haven't really done any recording in the past year since my laptop died so I got my old, old PC up and running to last me until Apple actually does something with the Macbook Pros.
Tried covering a Lo-Pan song 4-track style with one mic/channel for each instrument. No vocals
Messy as all hell though.
[soundcloud]https://soundcloud.com/da_qtip/black-top-revelation-lo-pan-instrumental-cover[/soundcloud]
That Lo pan track sounds really cool!
It's off their newest album Colossus, you should check it out if you haven't. A little on the poppier side but I dig it
Will do...
Well, a couple of more riffs came out today. I think I have some need of getting some things out or something.
[soundcloud]https://soundcloud.com/andersriffarriff/five[/soundcloud]
I'm liking that riff around 18 seconds
Recently worked with some friends to help them record their farewell EP. It's got a lot of stoner rock influence even if the music itself is much more punk. Gets constantly compared to Every Time I Die. I'm proud of the bass I wrote and played here and the artwork is fucking sick.
I can't figure out how to get the embed player to work here, so here's the link.

One of the two bands I was in broke up so I have a bunch of time to finish my next solo album. I released a single track preview of the first song I finished. Kind of a weird one has a great second half. Used a lot of the production techniques I've learned about over the course of the last year or so and I feel like the mix is a lot stronger. The guitars here use all amp sims and impulses think it turned out pretty well. Any feedback is welcome.

Thanks man! Yours is the first feedback from someone I don't know glad you liked it! I'm expecting roughly a late July to mid August release it's a full-length concept album about space travel.
I gotta say too if anyone does any keys/synth stuff the EZKeys stuff is pretty great. I have the Mellotoon and the Classic Electrics and I used some Podfarm effects on the Classic Electrics and they sound pretty damn great once you start stacking effects. They really sit well in the mix and cut nicely.

hey bro, glad you dig! not my arrangement though. its fun arranging covers how you want! just punk rock everything up, The Ramones sold more albums than most rock bands put together, its easier to play covers that way and bars like it.

Cool song. What sorta setup did you use to record the clean guitars at the beginning? Sounds really good.
I played it with jazz light gauge strings, 12-52, the slight ringing comes from the strings because they touch the fretwire a little because of their thickness.
Creates a slight oriental touch.
I used a Hall of Fame, 2 mics, one directly at the cone and one about 50 centimeters away from the 1960 Marshall cabinet.
A kind of Western

Its a great tone. Love those 1960's that's what I'd run if I didn't have to run digital/amp sim everything. My plan is hopefully to get a Line 6 Helix with my tax return, the early clips people are throwing up sound insane. Especially on bass which is my primary instrument.
I have never heard a modeler/multifx do a good fuzz emulation, but the cool thing is you can prolly plug in your fuzz pedals to the multifx and have it routed properly if you plug it into your amp effects loop too
Here's a take on a Swedish Christmas song... ;D Recorded on my IPad.

Ive been outside of my mind
What was stolen, I will find
My heart and my soul in this life
Ive been so far away
In conscience, I cant stay
opiating, Im rising Im fading
This fire rises burning inside my mind, I watch tV going blind
You are here, Illuminated in my sight In my soul I feel the shining light
All my time, inside my mind

well, I didn't sing. This was the first thing I recorded playing off the computer and I was excited and just fired up the stuff, made a loop and jammed.
I can't really humiliate myself too much further around here so if you want a laugh start at like the 5 minutes mark when I'm spazzing pretty good.
in case anyone is wondering:
Schecter string thru/passive emg's->HM-2 dist at 9 o'clock(very low)->malekko with a delay about the timing of the song->egnater set up like an AC30->16ohm tap into kustom 12" closed back and 8" bass combo speakers

Slow sludge track I'm working on. I need some feedback, please.
1. I can't shake the feeling that I've unwittingly ripped-off one or both of these riffs, but haven't been able to confirm it. Could be old Iron Monkey, Noothgrush, Grief, Moloch...I dunno. Hope I'm wrong.
2. If nobody recognizes the riffs and I go ahead with it (I'll add some more parts)...do any of you know someone that might be interested in doing some sludge vocals (screechy, deathy, or both)?
Thanks

^sounds good. nice distortion/fuzz. the first couple notes reminded me of acid king, but I think it is because their bass sounds like yours.
Thanks, appreciated. Just to be clear, the bass doesn't come in until 0:37. Up to that point, it's just a Gibson SG using only the neck pickup, through that little Orange Micro Dark I recently bought. That little amp sounds better than my Laney, haha.
ahhh, ok. anymore, downtuned heavily fuzzed guitar sounds like heavily fuzzed bass on upper strings. I definitely noticed when the second axe came in. I really thought that was the guitar. now that I listened over again with that in mind, ok, I see.
So maybe that was lori and the guitar opening some of those songs too that I thought was that sick bass dude's work. he goes all over the map. they create such a rich texture together..fuckin a. I don't mind being confused this time . it is all nice heh.

OUT OF MY MIND
You say you're the first thing out of my mind
I look for you but you're the last Ill find
Seems so special every every day
Fucked out of my mind, every way
Cause you're the only last time that Ill find
Spit it out and spin baby like old times
You want me in the worst way, I know that's right
Im gonna keep on trippin, right out of my mind
Now you seem like your just not around
I was flavor of the month and you cant be found
Do you remember those late night bling calls
And that time in the club and in the stalls
Cause you're the only last time that Ill find
Spit it out and spin baby like old times
You want me in the worst way, I know that's right
Im gonna keep on trippin, right out of my mind
p.s. I meant to say "bling bling calls" like the rappers say
just cause Im too legit to quit :)
ok here is the song I came up with tonight: https://soundcloud.com/earthalliance-area51/pandoras-box-2016-03-07-doom-metal
Its called PANDORAS BOX. Its a heavy song full of hatred and disgust. here are the lyrics:
In my time youll see
Have you forsaken me
Into the depths of despair
Your life beyond repair
Can you fight, to save your life
Death destruction killing and strife
The chains that bind and pull you down
your vortex black hole pandoras box
Now that your six feet deep
Dead inside your head dreams die
We tried to save you a million times
Buried deep with your thousand lies

Couple of riffs thrown together on the Ipad. Usually I start with something then just go along with it.
I have been working on my acoustic set for the last few months. Im a big AIC fan ;) its about zen meditation and enlightenment and self introspection. Here is a performance my original song I recorded just now: https://youtu.be/xZkY3cnO1mA
LYRICS:
VERSE 1
Have I become the person I never thought would be
Found all these paths in this sleep
Eyes of age just like abyss Ive known of
I open the doors to let this good haze come in, so come in
CHORUS:
Freely flows in through the mind
Never what I thought I could be
Can the good things flow in through your mind
Yes if you just let them be, LET THEM BE
VERSE 2
Found all these paths to what I despise
Fell into my big demise
Sound leaves, darkness enters
Life Id known disappeared
My soul becomes when I was like a child
BRIDGE
Enters my time again
This cloud I cannot deny
Shames my tries, but still they lie, again and again and again
Enters my time again
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZkY3cnO1mA&feature=youtu.be
Here is a song I recorded today, this song is about love and permanent loss. I wrote this song awhile ago: https://youtu.be/lv_n_t_F6is
KALEIDOSCOPE SUNRAY
Every day, she seems so far away
Bird of paradise, lost in the sun
Sleeps through fall, waits till may
Summers almost here again
CHORUS
Weve all pictured a kaleidoscope sunray
Weve hoped and dreamed to show us the way
Weve all pictured a kaleidoscope sunray
Weve hoped and dreamed, to show us the way
Ive liked to hide behind a new smile
And Ive liked to linger with ghosts from the past
Cause it still seems like shes standing right next to me
But stuck under November Cleveland skies
BRIDGE
Whispering winds are near
Tangerine skies are here
Aspirations are so close by, so she whispers can you fly
But not too close to the sun, and acid rain has spoiled all my fun
And clowns with red vein eyes, now Id like to go back home, back home
Since drummer quit, rearranged set into drone style.

hey there. song sounds good. all your pedals are really quiet. vocals remind me of type-o negative's a little. hope you kick ass.
Thanks. The singer recorded everything with just the two of us tracking the instruments to programmed drums initially. We only recently found a drummer, sent him the stems, and he sent it back with his drum takes. Not too bad for never being in the same room. Now, we're working backwards to shape up these tunes for live consumption.
This is from my project with Nikhil Kamineni from Mountain God and Ryan Lipynsky from Serpentine Path.
I play drums on this one. I think I might have added some synth, too.

Thank you very much! Yeah Nikhil (guitar) recorded all of this himself. I agree Ryan nailed the vocals and Nikhil did a great job with the vocal effects. Talented guys. I'm very lucky to work with them.
that is some good creepy shit. It immediately reminded me of the feel of a black metal piece I did called "The Mill" the same feel of the reverbs was uncanny, like instant connection
I was thinking about you when my desktop PC died and I had to get out thee olde laptop a couple weeks ago.
at least this POS could upgrade to Win10
I think I will hold out for 100% solid state drives on my next computing device, whatever that may be.
IDK if you even still have that. I just figured you and lumpy had a quick laugh and an 8-ball on me.
Nah man I'm typing to you on that computer right now! That was a very, very kind thing you did for me. Thank you. I have not forgotten.
Glad you liked the track! I'd love to hear yours. Is it posted somewhere?
ahhh, that's wonderful. The best shit is shit you can actually use.
I was going to link the track from my old myspace except they deleted my account (as of right now I think I am glad I am out of myspace, they got hacked major league.
The song i'm trying to find is like 10 years old. Remember Dubh Croi? haha. well I tried to get some projects going with him while he was in his settled down and learning guitar and black metal sounds and it came out of that little dark black metal phase.
I used to have an account at a steel mill in E Chicago Indiana(like on the bend of lake Michigan a little west of the legendary ghost town of Gary Indiana).
This is some old steel mill area and there was an ancient blast furnace off in the distance that was never dismantled. this hulking mammoth structure of aged behemoth-ness inspired me in a dark massive way.
so, I have to find it in my backups and put it on soundcloud. there is a sound which has an uncanny resemblance, like my tune could be the prologue of your song. I have to compare them to check this out...so will link it shortly when I get it ready in soundcloud.
I am also glad life seems positive and happy for you. being busy is always a good sign
also, I covet your cello haha!!
be back with link edit eventually.......

edits: disco, this is even more badass thru headphones. jeeezus yeah!
Jibby! Dude! That's great! really liked that. Also great with headphones.
but did you notice that there is like a tone or something that is similar in the 2 songs, on the guitar chords maybe or the general ambience from the reverbs.
I dulled everything down thru effects except the dripping, and you have the high end still in your mix(cuz drums), but even with that difference there is similarity.
IDK, they could be 2 songs by the same person or wtf i'm trying to point out here.
i never had that happen before with one of my creations i guess......

I have a few people in mind that we can ask.
Hopefully we can avoid running an ad on cl—Jon & I are not fond of sifting through a huge pile of feces for a competent bassist who owns his own gear, has transportation, and, of course, one who actually wants to join the band.

This is a very long jam (almost 21 minutes length) that I recorded a few days ago (on August 15th). My recording device is not very good (definitely not pro) and I made several mistakes but it was a blast and I had so much fun doing it.

kinda rough, but hey it killed some time. The drums are sliced and diced from a youtube jam tracks guy, not me.

Been working on this track off-and-on for months, I guess. Looking for some feedback from you folks before I do a final mix.
All my stuff is kinda stoner doom oriented, with some drone and industrial elements. It may bore the piss out of you, heh. The heavy part comes in at 3:23. Please let me know if anything sticks out like a sore thumb, etc.

Overall, it's good! I especially like the section that begins around 4:20. Most of my comments might fall under the category of personal taste, so take w/grain of salt.
Maybe needs some subtle variations in the drum patterns in the early sections? It's a wee bit too consistent. Like every 8-12 bars, have some sort of subtle flourish. Slightly too machine-like? Seems like you addressed this as the song progresses (?) I only listened once TBH.
The mix is really crowded in the upper midrange (?) Not sure how to describe that, how to address it, or if it even needs fixing.
There's a "blown out" aspect to the sound which may be slightly too much of a good thing?
Everything I said is more nit-picky, than OMG fix this. As they sometimes say in Tape Op (perhaps ironically), recording fidelity is overrated, the song and performance is most important.
What about vocals. There's a lot of possibilities there. Lots of different things could sound good on top of that.
Thanks, morty.
Lumpy, thanks for the feedback. Regarding the drums, I agree that they need some variation in the early parts...I'm trying to balance it being a sort of industrial thing, so I actually want them to be somewhat repetitive and robotic (notice there really aren't any fills because I don't want it to sound like a live drummer), but I think I agree with you. It's just too same-y there...boring.
I like the blown-out aspect of the sound when the heavy part comes in, but I hear ya. I drug all of that stuff out at length (with some changes) because it's heavy, and that's what I like...get a good riff and run with it (I'm a huge Ufomammut fan).
Regarding vocals, yeah...this is my main problem. I don't want to sing, I can't scream for shit...and I don't want to write lyrics, because I always hate what I come up with. That's why I threw in the voice samples (plus, I like voice samples for creepiness / atmosphere), to help out with the fact that there aren't any vocals. But it is extremely difficult to keep things interesting without vocals. And having every song full of voice samples will get old really fast.
I need to either find someone who wants to do vocals via long-distance, or buckle down and bury my voice in a bunch of effects (no problem ideologically, because it's supposed to be psychedelic and weird) and do the post-hardcore shouting thing.
Stop saying you can't do it, record some takes, discard and repeat. You'll get something.
Vocals are always the hard part. Im not very good at vox but i did them in one of my bands out of necessity. Played bass at the same time which i thought id never be able to pull off in a millon years. Somehow it worked. My problem is i cant project my voice. Im a quiet person by nature. Even when i yell im not that loud.
My band just started a SoundCloud account today, so I feel like I can finally contribute to this thread.
Here's us playing a song live that happens to be our most recently written song as well, 'The Wraith':
[soundcloud]https://soundcloud.com/sacredmonsterdoom/the-wraith-live[/soundcloud]
Technically, we first wrote this song 4 years ago, but it was canned pretty quickly. This version is a massive rewrite that kept the good stuff and added in some new parts to finish it off. Song cannibalism is still a pretty big part of our songwriting process...wonder if that's other peoples' experience as well.
In recent years before getting into radio and becoming famous, I met up with the bassist from FLIPPER called Bruno and we recorded a few jams...
https://soundcloud.com/drowsy-nurse
I'm still in touch with him too. I know that stuff isn't special but I think when I get Chad Channing on drums it's gonna be more rad.

Lots of different stuff, actually. My main rig is a first gen silver face Model T into a Sanford & Sonny Bluebeard Fuzz. The singer has a small arsenal, including a Hovercraft Matamp clone, a couple of Orange heads, and various newer fuzz pedals. We each did a track or two of rhythm guitar, and he mixed it all. Hard to tell what ended up on the recording!

I've been working on my next solo release for awhile now and wanted to share one of the tracks for feedback. Didn't finish vocals yet but I might leave this one instrumental. I massively upgraded my recording plugins in between this and my last release and the new synths sound <3. Let me know what you guys think!
Hey Chris, that's a really cool track! The riffs and synth leads in the second half are excellent and keeps the song fresh despite its length. Personally I don't think this needs vocals at all - in line with your other DOS material, this is pretty rhythmically and instrumentally complex. Drums are great by the way - feels very organic.
You might want to post this to r/doommetal or even r/metal ( but on Friday in their self promotion thread) for feedback - typically I get some decent replies in those subs.

Cool Ted thanks for the feedback! Sorry I haven't been able to make it to any of your guys recent shows been getting sick a lot lately and busy with work. I want to hear how your new stuff sounds with the single guitar. When are you guys putting out something new? The live recording sounded great but I'd love to hear a full length. If you guys are self-recording/mixing/mastering let me know I can share some of my plugins with you and save you some $$$.
I made the switch to the progressive EZDrummer expansion and it sounds really nice with a drumbus. It's not great at the heavy double bass but its a definite improvement on the snare/toms/cymbals. Been working on my new solo stuff for awhile since Hypnochron is going a bit slow now, we hope to have our new stuff re-recorded and released sometime in the summer (we actually recorded a full length but bought better mics and want to redo it). I'd like to get this album out in the next month or two though. Thanks!

That's quite good. Remove the drums and it's better than a lot of electronic crap on the scene (no oomph, your track has oomph). You could keep the drums and add guitars to that too, or vocals.
Where are you seeing these tutorials? I just completed a mix and submitted it, and it wasn't very good. But I ran out of time/ideas/talent. I need mix help.

A track from a solo album I'm releasing on October 27th. I was able to get pretty decent guitar tones with the Kazrog VST stuff and on the mixing/mastering front. KCLIP 2 and ValvEQ have been on sale most of the summer and are really good for mixing/mastering and both were used extensively on this track. I'd strongly recommend people that are self mixing/mastering give them a look.
This is just the opposite of just recently recorded. It is a demo from a band Johann Slam, Mike Brumley and myself where in back in 1994.
I did recently dump the cassette onto soundcloud thogh.

I went back to the Blut Aus Bored track, added a ton of synth parts and did some rearranging and new programming, and gave it a proper name. Some kind words (https://www.sleepingvillagereviews.com/reviews/sacred-monster-high-confessor-track-reviewstream) from Sleeping Village Reviews on it, that probably describes it better than I could:
QuoteWorship the Weird is, without a doubt, the single-most entertaining album I've heard this year, and I'm very, very excited for its release on March 1st. ... High Confessor is a track that ratchets up the riff-centric intensity--both thematically and sonically--with shameless abandon.

This is a VERY long instrumental that I created several years ago but now I feel it has reached its full potential. The only problem during the recording was the wah. Apparently I engaged one of the DIP switches wrong, something that has NEVER happened before, so the effect doesn't sound quite well but... what the heck? At least the rest of the recording sounds quite decent. Also, for some strange reason, the image gets frozen during the last 5 or 6 seconds of the video but you can still hear the last portion of audio.

This demo was recorded between January 19 - 21, 2022, using GarageBand, Focusrite Scarlett Solo audio interface and Scarlett Studio condenser mic CM25 MkIII and it's, well... quite different from the stuff I usually share around here.
that was a nice way to start the day, neighbor

This a very fuzzy and nasty instrumental called "En el bosque encantado, las galletas son mías" ("At the enchanted forest, the cookies are mine"):

This really was a great achievement mainly for two reasons:
#1 I get terribly nervous when I record myself on video, you can't imagine how sweaty my hands were during this shoot but I managed to do it on the first take... of course there are a few mistakes here and there, but nothing really serious.
#2 This is the first time I record image and sound separately (video with my cellphone and audio with the Zoom H4n Pro). I thought that my old laptop was going to suffer with the editing on iMovie but the final result was actually excellent in terms of synchronicity.
This song is called "Pilares de nuestra conciencia" ("Pillars of our conscience"):

Sweet. I like it.
Song name idea. "Viper eyes". "You've been viperized" "Viperized" you get it.

The description I wrote on YouTube:
"Audio Only. This song was recorded on February 2nd, 2023 using a Zoom H4n Pro Handy Recorder with a Shure SM57 mic for the guitar amplifier and a Sennheiser e906 mic for the vocals". Even though this is an old song I released originally on SoundCloud many years ago, that particular recording was made with the built-in mic of an iPhone 3GS, whereas this version was recorded in a much more professional way and I really feel it captures the sound of the amplifier better.
oops, I made a mistake, sorry about that.
This demo was recorded using this chain...
For the guitar on the left channel:
Guitar > Warm Audio Foxy Tone Box > overdriven amp > Shure SM57 mic > Scarlett Solo Studio 3rd Gen interface > GarageBand.
For the guitar on the right channel and the solo itself:
Guitar > Warm Audio Foxy Tone Box > overdriven amp > Scarlett Studio CM25 MkIII mic > Scarlett Solo Studio 3rd Gen interface > GarageBand.
All the vocals were recorded using the Scarlett Studio CM25 MkIII mic > Scarlett Solo Studio 3rd Gen interface > GarageBand.
The drums were created on GarageBand.
Mindrocket brought us in to record a couple songs.

Sweet!
Hello, so... I recorded this song yesterday and it's slightly more mellow than the usual stuff with a lot of Uni-Vibe (MJM Sixties Vibe) but also with a good dose of fuzz (MJM London Fuzz), wah (Teese RMC3FL) and delay (Analog Man ARDX20). As usual, I get terribly nervous when recording (specially on video) so there are a few mistakes here and there but nothing too serious (I think)...
Hi guys, this is the last video that I will make for a while, it features a good dose of fuzz (MJM London Fuzz) plus other effects such as wah (Real McCoy Custom RMC3FL), envelope filter (WMD Protostar), ring modulator (Fairfield Circuitry Randy's Revenge), analog delay (Analog Man ARDX20) and a looper (Boss RC-5). Hope you like it...
