anyone ever have this happen?? the nut on my bass suddenly exploded. the nut is split in half between the a and d strings and half the nut is slid over and hanging off the neck. it happened the other night. I was in the room when it happened.

the bass was tuned to standard tuning and ive never had a problem.. weirdest thing ever. all I can think of is the weather change..maybe the neck shifted. why now though?? weird..

^ I haven't heard that, but good to know if that's the case.

I actually meant to put something about that in my post. I was in the midst of a head cold (still am), so I was a bit groggy and forgot. If you're going to buy one used, try to buy it from a reputable source. There definitely are a lot of fakes floating around, since it's such a popular item, and it's not that easy to spot in small thumbnail pictures. It's worth buying one new though. There's certain microphones that are always going to be useful if you're recording and it's certainly high up on the list. A lot of people slam them online as well, but that's just the expected backlash of something being widely used and talked out. If you buy one and you record semi-regularly, you'll get your money's worth out of it. They last pretty much forever.

So I just lost a three-day run of gigs due to an oversight from the band leader.

I submitted my availability for said weekend several weeks back and never heard otherwise.

Being I'm driving from Austin to Houston I sent an email to said band leader seeing if I can get some extra comp for gas.

He says the other bassist is doing the shows, and no one told me that?

I responded no. And I cancelled/turned down gigs to do this weekend.

No response yet. But I already sent a brief and level headed email saying to give other bassist the gigs, I will be trying to salvage the weekend, and included my address so he can send a check for whatever monetary amount he feels my time is/was worth, and closed it with my official resignation and best of luck to them.

I just lost rent due to their oversight. And luckily I didn't drive all the way out there to find this out. Saved said band leader most of his teeth.

What the actual fuck? As a sideman the level of incompetency I've occasionally had to endure is truly staggering.

And it always hits my bank account and not theirs.

Not holding my breath for a check from this clown, but would be a good gesture if I got one.

so this dude says to me..all the old cats that were playing out back in the early 90s are still playing shows. all the people who were going to shows in the 90s are no longer going out to shows.

so much truth..

the only true diehards are the musicians themselves..

Lumpy

You gotta have all-ages shows... get the young people involved. Then they start their own bands (and bring new people out to the shows) and the cycle of life continues.

I'm continually amazed at the support and enthusiasm younger folks give for a lot of the bands with older players in them. There also seems to be a musical open mindedness with younger people who aren't primarily fans of the Heavy or older-style Rock (at least out here) as well.
Kind of gives me hope for the future of music and opportunities for older cats like myself to still get up there and do the do.

Is anyone else occasionally jealous of those indie-folk bands that show up to gigs and the band is one scrawny guy with a parlour acoustic guitar and a girl with a little Nord keyboard on a stand. No amps or anything, a total of probably 20 lbs of gear total, up there at the total mercy of the PA and the soundman.

liquidsmoke

This guy, of course. I'm jealous of bands that play with 1x12 combos and 2 pedals.  ;D

Danny G

No jealousy here.

After lugging my body weight in bass gear, it's never too heavy once I fire it up and hit that first low E \m/,

How they sound when they start playing usually fixes it.

I get the roadie/load-in angle of what you are saying. in which case I would say to become the singer heh.

I can honestly say that I have never watched the dinger and foetuscide jamboree in person, ever.
the expression "people eat with their eyes" can be translated from restaurant food presentation wisdom over to the stage setup of a band.

a cute ovation with all the little cute holes and a little nord keyboard would say to me : G T F O (if there is a scarf tied to any signal cable, this means RUN!)

Now IF the dude is playing a badassed Novation synth and they have a really good drummer and a very ecclectic goth-ish front lady...that would work better for me. chances are better that I would stay

See what happens, not holding my breath. Still haven't even gotten a response, much less an apology. Getting a check would really be a stretch.

I was able to fill in Fri/Sat with one of the offers I had initially declined so at least making something this weekend. Won't be $500 tho.

And my van just started misfiring again en route to Houston last night. Hoping a spark plug wire just came loose again. If not I could take it in, I just won't be able to pay for any repairs... >:(

On top of the new tires I need, out of contact lenses, and SVT is sitting in the shop again. And rent is overdue.
