For those of you doing home recording:  this is a great comparison video on basic guitar mic'ing technique.

I can use my friend's Orange cab at the practice space. But the grill cloth makes it impossible to see exactly where the speaker is. I tried using the flashlight on my phone, and couldn't see it that way either. So I just estimate it.

Cool topic. Let us know how it works out? need to get some mics on some cabs myself. Back soon I hope. Been putting it off but your thread kicks it forward.

Nice!

Now that I'm getting more into recording it's good to revisit even basic things like this.

Yeah, I've placed lots of mics in my own experimentation and watched lots of engineers place mics. But it's nice to have it fully explained and demonstrated like that.

Mics are one of those boring purchases I can never convince myself to use my surplus cash for. A new pedal is just more exciting you know? Anyway I finally caved and I bought a pair of sm-57s. My god, what a difference from the garbage Direct In / amp modelling shit I was working with.

Luckily I have a buddy that thinks he needs ALL the shit. So I can just borrow/rent for beer

I'm the luckiest. Everytime, and I can do it again, I've thrown up a mic. I Win. The room is very helpful but people record in bathrooms too. Right place right time/humidity/mooncycle/players.

Don't get me wrong, Imma mic
whore
I'm glad you guys like these posts, it makes my youtube binges more worthwhile.  =)
I definitely prefer a mic'd amp to sims.  I'm currently using a Heil PR30, Beyer 88, and SM57 in different positions and combinations for recording guitars.
